Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomAlthough the location seems pretty safe and crime in Japan is low in general, be aware that there's no lock on the rooms and no safe for valuables in the rooms. Also, the stairs to the upstairs rooms are very steep and narrow.
Authentic Japanese-style inn. Room comfortable with air conditioning and fridge. Decent Japanese-style breakfast available for a reasonable price. Marvellous location, very central, with many tourist sites and a wide variety of restaurants in walking distance. Also close to a metro station for travel within the city. Excellent value overall.

AustraliaWe were on the ground floor, I would recommend requesting an upstairs room and/or bringing ear plugs Because the walls were washi paper and we were right near the stairwell, entry/exit and bathroom, I have to say it was occasionally quite noisy. I swear to god there was a herd of elephants staying above us one night 😂 and then they went out, but one of them left their alarm on and it kept going off late at night 🤔🤦♀️ Another night a group arrived home very late after partying, and another night there was a family with kids who hadn’t leant their “inside voices” yet 😂. The other nights, it was quiet and no issues. We had some really early mornings, tried to be quiet but probably annoyed some people too! All in all I think it really depends on the other guests, but if you are a light sleeper might be an issue for you. Could be solved with ear plugs or sleeping pills. Also the doors don’t lock. Personally I didn’t care but we could hear some of our neighbours complaining about it through the washi paper walls 😅
This was a cute traditional style Ryokan in the heart of Kyoto. The room was spacious and the shared bathroom facilities were very clean. It wasn’t too busy either - The shower and bathroom were never occupied when I wanted to use them over our whole 5 day stay. The location is amazing, it’s right next to the city centre, Nishiki market, Pontocho alley and multiple stations to get around Kyoto.

United StatesOne night a family with a small child stayed, which was a bit noisy (thin walls) but such things can’t be avoided all the time.
I really wanted to experience the traditional Japanese ryokan along with traditional breakfast and that’s exactly what it was. The tatami room with futon was very comfortable, and breakfast in the room was exactly right: grilled fish, an egg, vegetable of the day, homemade pickled vegetables, miso soup, rice and tea. Best way to start the day.

United KingdomThe shared bathroom down the stairs was a little awkward to get to in the middle of the night when trying to keep quiet and not disturb other guests. I did know this when booking the room , just a little tricky. Felt like i had to tiptoe around.
Location was ideal , nice to stay in a traditional Inn. The dinner and breakfast service to the room was outstanding and a must try.

ThailandThe shared bathroom and restroom were on the first floor. With the steep stairways, it was a little bit inconvenience.
The location was great. The facility itself was very traditional style Japanese ryokan. I love everything about the atmosphere and the interior. The room, bathroom and restroom was clean. The host was very fluent in English. Since my room is right above the entrance, I could hear noises from outside a bit, but it didn't really bother me. The breakfast was great!

United StatesNo room number, I was worried I would get into somebody's else room.
Affordable ryokan with a very good location. The building is beautiful, the futon was very comfortable, even better than regular beds. They always have tea with a different cookie every day. The shared bathroom was always clean, and the shampoo/conditioner made my hair very soft, I wish I knew what brand it is. I liked how they provided new towels every day.

JapanFirst of all, the location and stuffs hospitality are amazing. I don’t usually stay at “Ryokan” in Japan but hope every Ryokan in Japan can offer the same quality of hospitality as them. Our stay, the corner of second floor room, was enough size and space for couple could be three, air conditioner works very well and also window are openable, well sun right comes in we can adjust the lightness by shade as well. The amenities with the room that Japanese’s tea and snacks always touch our hearts every single days, and Japanese Ofuro were amazing. Gino area and there are touristic avenue quite close to the Kawasgima inn, location is can’t complain really. Stuffs are always heartwarming and so much kind, always try to support when we need help, if I had a chance to visit Kyoto, I would stay with them again. We could stay with full of classic Japanese life while staying, thank you very much.

ThailandThe perfect traditional little ryokan! It’s located very near the shopping area and only 15-20 bus ride away from popular destination such as Kiyomizu-dera temple. . The hosts were so lovely and friendly. My room was so cute and cozy and the futon was thick and comfortable. The shared bathroom and restrooms were also very clean, it was so nice to soak in the bath tub after a long day. I was able to book this place only for one night since it’s so popular, and it was definitely one of the highlights of my Kyoto trip.
