Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe main part of the room had recently been redecorated but the bathroom was a bit tired and dusty in the slats in the doors. However we still had a good night sleep and the other facilities made up for it. Staff at the front desk were ok but not overly welcoming, restaurant staff were lovely especially with our toddler
Stayed 1 night in Japanese style room as a family of 3. Room was very large. There is a large new kids play area on the ground floor. Restaurant was new and selection at dinner and breakfast was very good. Onsen, especially the outdoor baths were excellent. Hotel had a very relaxed and happy vibe. Great views toward Kagoshima and Sakurajima

Australiaone of our room was not so well-prepared, they forgot re-stocking yukata and onsen towel. Even after I complained, no one showed up to check the room again. We wish the hot spring was hotter but perhaps this is personal preference
Very good service overall. Great selection of food for both breakfast and dinner buffet

SwedenThe place is showing its age and the rooms could serve from being refurbished. This is particularly true of the bathroom of my room, which was a little shabby. The lightening in the room was not optimal There should have been a reading light for the sofa corner. Beware that if you like to sleep long in the morning, this is not the place for you. At seven there is quite a bit of chatter in the corridor of people on their way to take a hot bath.
It's a big hotel, More than 400 rooms! It's main attraction is the onsen, and the onsen is certainly versatile with a number of different pools and stations. Apart from the onsen there is a not a lot to do in the area. I had hoped to do some walking and hiking, but there are limited opportunities. They have a buffer dinner and breakfast. It's OK, but there is a bit of overlap between the two. And the same from day to day. The room itself was spacious and by opening the widow, it was possible to keep the temperature down at night.

AustraliaA gym or workout room would be good for such a big hotel.
Excellent buffet breakfast and dinner. However the dinner had many dishes of shrimp (which we like but some people don’t) and the next night all the dishes were the same. The onsen facilities were very good.

United StatesToo hot. You can turn the heat off in the room, but the heat from the genkan and bathroom still bleeds into the room. I had the sliding doors open, so that cooled it down. However, I was fortunate in that the wind was blowing away from the hotel while I was there. Otherwise, the room could have been full of the sulphur smell of the hot springs below.
Good location close to the bus stop for the airport as well as the bus stop for Ebino Plateau, etc. About a ten minute walk from Maruo Falls and Senjojiki, and right next to one of the entrances to the Forest Therapy Road (highly recommended). Excellent breakfast and dinner buffets. Wonderful onsen, especially the rotemburos, which have the same beautiful milky blue water as Maruo Falls. The onsen is also open practically all day, only closing between 9am and 11am as well as after midnight. Spacious 12-mat room and balcony, with a view that includes Sakurajima on a clear day. Quite a bargain price, considering all it comes with. I can’t wait to return.

AustraliaThere were some surfaces that weren't 100% cleaned. A little more attention to detail would be good - but I am being very picky.
Being able to wear Yukata to dinner was a unique experience for us and we loved it. You were able to accomodate us all (4) in one room comfortably, with parents on the beds and grown up kids on the futons.

- non Japanese English speaking staff. They are helpful and polite, in a way more polite than the local staff. - Special thanks to a Vietnamese lady who works at the front desk. She helped me to communicate with an omakase restaurant which only accepts phone booking at the last minute. - plenty of parking space

AustraliaSpacious resort-style hotel with many facilities (table tennis, anyone?). Large and varied onsen, including lovely open air ones. Extensive buffet breakfast and dinner offerings are supplemented by chef- prepared on-the-spot extras - despite rapid FOMO guest plate-loadeing, the staff kept the dishes replenished. There's a Lawson outlet at the T-junction below the hotel. Also, for guests not travelling by car, a few mini-buses per day run to / from Ebino Plateau using bus stops also on the main road below the hotel. Hope you encounter better hiking weather than I did in late November.

AustraliaThe room is too hot all day long because the central air conditioning was turned off. The heating is turn on instead. You cannot control the air conditioning. The breakfast and dinner buffet could be improved. It's all the same food after the first day.
The Onsen was excellent and not many people when we were there. The mud bath was an experience. The view was amazing because we have a high floor and we can see Sukarujima and the surrounding mountains.

AustraliaThe room got a bit hot at night, the only was to cooling was to open the windows. However there is a strong smell of sulfuric in the air. The check-in took a long time waiting in line (only spoke in Japanese) and also had to explaining everything. Also, when I was checking in at around 4pm, the staff told me dinner is only available at 745pm as they were busy!!! I did get upset about it as we were wanting to onsen and dinner and sleep early. I did express my disappointment with my limited Japanese, so the staff did call the restaurant and change our 2 person booking to 6pm. The common area is nice and modern however the room is a bit dated and needed some freshen up. Since it is a big hotel, there were a number of tour groups, which makes the whole buffet experience a bit of chaos and extremely busy.
We were there for 2 nights, half board, tatami room sleeping on the futons. Onsen was good, with indoor and outdoor Onsen. The half-board was buffet style breakfast and dinner with many choices. The portions are small so we get to try many dishes made with local ingredients, the beef station really stood out as it was very tender and cooked well. Free parking available, right at the hotel.

Rooms are great. We got the rooms with open air bath which was superb. Love the buffet dinner and breakfast although there was time limit for the dinner. Food comes with great variety and good taste. Public onsen is huge and offer wide range of bath to choose. We enjoy the outdoor bath and the mud shower most.
