How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt had everything I could possibly need: kitchen, laundry, commons area. The beds in the shared dorm all had privacy curtains. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend and stay again.

Verified reviewCosy atmosphere and very friendly staff. Different from most Japanese hostels and minshuku I stayed in before, the pillows are soft. ;) Maybe it's because I like trains, but the rumble didn't bother me at all.
The curtains transmit a lot of light.

Verified review10 min walk to the gallery. There are many good cafe and bakery near by along the road. The working staff are quite friendly and informative, English-speaking very well. This is my only choice in Maya and Ojicho but thankfully it's a good spot.
Single room air-con stop working in the morning so I feel a little bit hot.

Verified reviewThese were some of the friendliest staff members I have encountered during my 5-week stay in Japan. The hospitality really set the tone for my first time in Kobe and I am excited to come back again for longer one day. No one ever missed an opportunity to say 行ってらしゃい when I left or especially お帰り when I came back. The shared space on the first floor was so cozy and comfortable. There is also a place to do laundry. The location of the accommodation could not be more convenient. It is only a few minutes from the station and the zoo. (!)
As someone with mobility issues, I cannot comfortably say that I would stay here again because the stairs to get anywhere else in the building, like to the restrooms or the dorm at night, were extremely steep and honestly terrifying. I could not recommend this accommodation for those with a disability or general fear of heights. It seemed like a hazard trying to get any sort of large or heavy luggage up and down these stairs without help from staff or another guest, but you can leave your luggage on the first floor. The building is old and quite hot, and the bathrooms are a tight squeeze. If you stay here for more than a couple of days, I would definitely say to book a private room.

Verified reviewI like how this hostel is kind of known within the local community around the area - when I went to the Nice Bar which was 600 meters away, a bartender just knew I stay there and I learnt how the owner of this hostel is the first to establish a hostel around the Nada area and brought foreigners around here. I really had such a nice evening at that bar chatting with local people and thus I have fond memory for this hostel too. Staff is very friendly in recommending many things around the area; was very helpful when I lock my key inside of the room; kindly waited for me for 10 min when I arrived at the place for check in beyond 9pm
I was just very scared to make noise at night because the floor and the steps to climb up to the bed easily makes sound

Verified reviewDespite the cons, they make a huge effort in making this an exceptional hostel. That effort alone deserves 9 stars. They recruit the kind of staffers who are sociable as well as respect & care about their jobs. So that’s why guests feel welcome whenever they come visit, because all staff members can give you the same welcome feeling. Also they’ve managed to attract a certain type of guests, who like talking & sharing stories. So by now it’s almost guaranteed you won’t feel lonely here, because you’ll be surrounded by those people. The hostel gives out an intangible, cozy& relaxing atmosphere while encouraging spontaneous social interactions. That is not an easy job to do in Japan, and kudos to them to manage to pull it off.
As others have said, it’s VERY close to the train line. Luckily the trains don’t run at night, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to get a sleep. But you may be waken up earlier than expected. The walls are paper thin, so you can perfectly hear others walking around & others talking as if they’re in your room. If your neighbours are having sex you wouldn’t be able to sleep too. However, you won’t hear the conversations in the lounge, which is a plus. The house is old, but they do take a good care of it, so it DOESN’T look rundown. The toilets don’t flush smoothly, because the water isn’t strong enough, so you might see others’ “remains” if you’re unlucky.

Verified reviewIt was a very charming artistic place, I really liked it.
Only the noise of the bunk beds, they were very comfortable but the stairs creaked and moved a lot every time someone got into the upper beds. Besides that everything was great!

Verified reviewI liked the place in itself. It was really cute. The staff was also very nice and friendly. They gave me good recommendations for dinner. The bed was confortable and everything was clean.
The stairs to get to the upper bed were a bit steep so I had some trouble to reach the bed as I am a bit clumsy.

Verified reviewThe staff there was so friendly and welcoming and they had some good recommendations on activities/restaurants! There were loads of local shops/restaurants nearby. The hostel is only a 17 minute walk from the pier and I was able to get a free pass on the cable car up Mt Maya, that was a nice bonus.
