Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Very friendly, an abundance of food and a very enjoyable unique food experience. The temple is close to everything. The prayer experience was amazing and would recommend travellers to participate.

United StatesOverall no negatives - it is pricey and takes some time to get to from Osaka but overall it was worth it for 1 night. Be aware that bathroom and shower facilities are shared with other guests and shower facilities are locker room / onsen style.
Simply an amazing experience to stay at a Buddhist temple, and visit Koyasan. A super unique and beautiful place. Meals were amazing. Morning prayers were very cool to see.

Dinner was excellent! Beautiful lodgings. Serene setting. Worth the trip even with our four children who were dubious about how they'd cope with the experience. We loved it.

United StatesMy mom and I stayed here for 2 nights and had the most amazing time! The staff was very welcoming and kind. I speak Japanese but a lot of other travelers didn’t and I think they got by just fine. The temple grounds are very quaint and peaceful plus the dinner and breakfasts were amazing. I would suggest staying two nights to fully enjoy the experience of the temple and the town itself. We had a car but walked everywhere even to Okunoin.

GreeceThe place was amazing. Very beautiful, with a zen garden outside. Very obliging people at the reception and everything as described. The hole of Koyasan was a unique and unforgettable experience which was enhanced by our stay. Extra special like to the showers which were traditional ryokan style. What my body needed after so many days of exploring cities in Japan!!!

United StatesThe showers are difficult to use, it is an inverted bucket to sit on, with a shower handle for each person, shared with four other people in the same room. There are no locks for the room. Very expensive.
Magical visiting Mt. Koyosan !!! should be a must for everyone traveling to Japan. The experience of staying at a Monastery was very unique, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was basic with tatami mats and a mattress to sleep. The wi-fi worked well and the dinner / breakfast was truly delicious. The meditation and prayer sessions were well worth the time. Very peaceful.

United KingdomA fantastic ryokan experience in a vast impressive temple complex. Dinner and breakfast was exceptional and prepared with great care, and the 9pm curfew was actually a great opportunity to slow down and take stock. We pre-booked a room with an ensuite, which made it a little easier for our family. The staff were extremely welcoming and the early morning ceremony was just great. Thank you!

ItalyBeautiful room with a window overlooking the garden and the vermilion Konpon Daito Pagoda. The sound of the bell and the scent of incense completed the picture. The morning prayer was very interesting and emotional.

AustraliaNothing other than my stiffness when I had to sit cross-legged on the floor to eat dinner and breakfast.
Staying in Koyasan was incredibly special. The temple was incredibly beautiful, and being able to attend morning prayers was an experience I will never forget. The room was traditional - we had a lovely fresh dinner sitting cross-legged in our room before a visit to the small but very hot onsen and then a wonderful night's sleep on very comfortable futons on the floor. There were also some other activities you could do - we copied out the sutra (a prayer in Japanese text), which was like a meditative calligraphy lesson. We also had a shiatsu massage, which was incredible and got rid of all my neck stiffness - this was not provided by the temple but is advertised in their in room information leaflet and I'd highly recommend.

United KingdomThe property is a bit far from Okinoin to go by foot. If you don’t mind taking a bus, or if you have your own car, then that’s no problem, but we like walking. It’s about 30 minutes walk to the start of the cemetery and a further 30 minutes to Okunin proper. With the curfew at 9pm it means that you won’t get much of the cemetery at night.
I loved it that the reception staff spoke fluent English. The Shojin Ryori (traditional Buddhist meals) were excellent. The property is clean, quiet and peaceful. What stayed with me the most was the Ajikan practice with one of the monks. This monk had the most beautiful energy about him. It was very touching and inspiring.

United KingdomJust be aware walls are very thin and we had quite talkative neighbours!
A visit to Koyasan wouldn't be complete without a stay in a monastery and we would highly recommend this as a perfect place to choose. Very convenient location for the major sites. Luxurious it isn't (not that we expected it to be - it is a working monastery after all) but we found it perfectly comfortable and had a very good night's sleep. The opportunity to participate in the morning prayers was an unforgettable experience. The dinner and breakfast were excellent, although not all of it to our taste, but thoughtfully presented.
