How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewOur stay was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with such warmth and kindness by our hosts, who made us feel at home instantly. They prepared delicious homemade bread and fresh orange juice, made from their own oranges for us. The surroundings were equally stunning: a beautiful beach just a short walk away, breathtaking landscapes, and the charming little village of Atashika, which felt like a hidden gem. If you’re looking for a place that offers stunning nature, a peaceful atmosphere, and warm-hearted hosts who truly care about their guests, this is the perfect choice. We are already looking forward to coming back one day!

Verified reviewFabulous location across from the beach (which we had to ourselves), and for exploring parts of the Kii Peninsula (and Kumano Kodo). Hisashi was really welcoming and helpful and the room/apartment was really comfy. The 'in room' breakfast was great, complete with their own juice and homemade bread. And we had dinner one night, made by Hisashi, which was great. Would definitely recommend and will be back!
Nothing - we would have liked to stay longer! Only think to keep in mind is that it might be a struggle to get around without a car (the town is v quiet, esp in the offseason)

Verified reviewWonderful place to stay. You must visit. So very quiet. Clean, comfortable, spacious. The young man who owns the cafe/accommodation was put a lot of work into his business. The evening meal he cooked us was fabulous and the craft beer made from mandarins from his families mandarin orchard was excellent. Definitely stay here again.

Verified reviewWhole beach house, spacious and tastefully if minimalistically decorated, with a suntrap balcony. Laid back surf vibe, sitting over a cafe (open at weekends, will not disturb your stay). The owner is fantastic, attentive, thoughtful and provides great breakfast and fresh juice from his farm.
Nothing to not like. Be aware there is no laundry facility at present though. Wasn't an issue, just plan for this

Verified reviewAtashika is a gem - a beautiful beach cove surrounded by mountains, peaceful, hardly a soul on the beach, especially at the end of the day. We spent a glorious day of relaxation here, and could easily have spent more. The guest house is a fantastic and comfortable space that has been cleverly designed, and the hosts are so kind and generous and eager to help. It is inspiring to see their entrepreneurial spirit and ecological mindset (the house was renovated with second hand materials, for example). The whole experience was magical and we wished we had more time. There is so much to discover in Wakayama, and this could be a good base. Hope we can come back someday.
There is only one difficulty, and that is with finding food in Atashika. The hosts provide a wonderful breakfast complete with fresh orange juice from their farm, and during the day there are several places serving food. We loved the food truck outside the car repair shop and its cold cold beer. But after nightfall there is nowhere in walking distance that serves food If you have a car there is no problem because there are nearby towns with plenty of options (or you can take a train, which passes regularly, we were just too tired). The grocery store across the street has some nice prepared foods and we were able to put a meal together that way, but it's a pity that the apartment doesn't have a hot plate so one could actually cook, (maybe a dishwasher too) because there is enough variety at the market that the food problem would be solved. But the toaster oven and fridge were super handy already. It's totally worth it regardless!

Verified reviewEverything. But to the point. This is a great spot if you want to do kumano kodo iseshi route. The scene is to die for. But weirdly during my time zero people come here. Lol. So picture say the best. And enjoy the picture. The owner give us access whole house and he is owner for orange farm which have one of the best oranges as well.

Verified reviewWe really enjoyed staying at Hisashi’s place. The apartment is perfect for couples or families. It is very clean, spacious, and comfortable. It is carefully renovated with a lot of care for Japanese traditional houses. The futons were very comfortable and the breakfast with delicious bred and juice was just perfect. The village itself is definitely worth a visit. It is very relaxed and still offers everything you need. Supermarket, restaurant and especially a great beach just in front and beautiful nature. We were warmly welcomed and immediately felt like being at home. We definitely recommend to book dinner if possible. Food is amazing here.

Verified reviewStaying at this Atishika Bay beach house was perhaps one of our favourite stays in two weeks of touring the Kii Pennisula by car. We stayed for one night during the downtime season (March) while things were quieter, and that suited our temperament having just toured the Kumano Kodo Senzan. The owner's concept of this dwelling is to provide a simple and humble beachside retreat in which guests can while the days in relaxed manner. The house has everything provided for, and there are thoughtful personal touches: fresh orange juice from the owner's orchid; a list of recommended places to eat, places to walk the Kumano Kodo Isije route, and other nearby attractions; and books and art adding character to the rooms. The charm is in its very local, low-key, unpretentious, and community feeling.
Although this type of accommodation may not be to everyone's taste, the owner's welcome, and the care and attention to the simple beach house design was perfect for us/me.
