Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumThe stay in the Kurokawa Onsen exceeded our expectations. We spent amazing 18 hours in the onsen. We had specious room with private onsen. We could also use the other onsens in the resort privately. Dinner was served in a private room. The serving, taste, presentation was of the level of Michelin restaurant. The staff pays attention of every detail. Definitely worth recommendation. We loved it!

TaiwanMight be a bit different if you prefer a modern hotel, but still recommend everyone to give it a try.
Greatest traditional hotspring hotel we have ever stayed in Japan. Recommend to everyone who wants to experience the traditional way of hotspring culture.

CanadaWhat's not to like? From the moment we entered the parking we were treated like VIPs. We're not used to that! The room with its own onsen was really spacious and quiet. The property is beautifully landscaped. We didn't try the public indoor onsen, but the outside ones were lovely. Meals were beautiful and tasty and the servers were so kind. We also got an onsen pass and tried some other onsen in the town the following day - highly recommend but not needed with all the facilities here. It was a really nice treat to stay here.

AustraliaWe loved everything. The shower/bath arrangements would be unusual if you had had no experience with Japanese onsens. But we were very happy as we love onsens.
The property was beautifully presented with great attention to detail. The internal courtyard gardens were particularly beautiful.

CanadaIts a tough question - we really enjoyed everything - if we had to pick, the fact the chef would not accommodate a pescatarian diet was disappointing considering the price was almost $800 Canadian for one night including dinner and breakfast which had a few meat options my husband couldn't eat. We asked in advance giving plenty of notice.
The five private baths were such a bonus! We tried 3 of them. Our room, while a bit rustic was AMAZING and our dinner was very good - the saki flight was a super way to try 3 different types.

What an absolutely stunning traditional Japanese Ryokan. Nestled high in the mountains of hot spring resort we were welcomed in style with tea and cakes. The room was quite simply stunning with so many touches of tradition and elegance. Our own private hot spring bath was wonderful as were all the smaller rooms and balconies. We toured almost all of the many private and public baths on site and we especially enjoyed being able to share some of them as a family. The outdoor bath is an experience I will never forget. Our banquet meal was a treasure of new tastes and experiences and is an event that will live long in the memory. Thank you to all the staff who treated us like honoured guests. One night here just wasn’t enough.

SingaporeNothing. The weather could have been better but it was part of the onsen charm.
Service was excellent. Attentive and friendly staff. Walking distance to the onsen town. The outdoors baths (both private and public) were amazing. The onsen hopping was an enjoyabl experience. The whole inn was surrounded tastefully by nature and i loved the feeling of being submerged in nature and still have my urban creature comforts.

SingaporeThe outdoor onsen does not have bathing facilities and it is not linked to the indoor onsen. One has to walk outside to reach the outdoor onsen. The room rate is rather expensive compared to other cities in Kyushu.

LatviaHere I can continue adding enthusiastic epithets. I can tell you about the difficulties: if you don't know at least the basics of Japanese language and traditions, everything will be fine, but... it will be a little more difficult to understand what and when to do. Perhaps, in this case, you will miss something. :)
The place, the service, the staff, the atmosphere, the baths... everything is wonderful. When visiting Japan, spending a day in an onsen village is a must! And Kurokawa Onsen is the best place.

AustraliaVery traditional Ryokan in kurokawa with their own set of public and private baths. Our room came with its own private bath which we enjoyed the most - it was perfect! The private baths outside got a bit busy so we didn't get to experience it much. The outdoor public bath was amazing too, specially early morning. Dinner and breakfast served was outstanding and impressive.
