How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe stay in the Kurokawa Onsen exceeded our expectations. We spent amazing 18 hours in the onsen. We had specious room with private onsen. We could also use the other onsens in the resort privately. Dinner was served in a private room. The serving, taste, presentation was of the level of Michelin restaurant. The staff pays attention of every detail. Definitely worth recommendation. We loved it!

Verified reviewAfter seeing the village, we felt very content about getting one of the best and cosy ryokans, the mossy forest was a highlight for us and the baths were beautiful. The staff offered to pick and drop us off at the bus stop and greeted us at the door, very friendly and polite. ♡ The food was also great too, i am still wondering how the chef got even a subtle piece of watermelon to taste so good, impressive.

Verified reviewGreatest traditional hotspring hotel we have ever stayed in Japan. Recommend to everyone who wants to experience the traditional way of hotspring culture.
Might be a bit different if you prefer a modern hotel, but still recommend everyone to give it a try.

Verified reviewWhat's not to like? From the moment we entered the parking we were treated like VIPs. We're not used to that! The room with its own onsen was really spacious and quiet. The property is beautifully landscaped. We didn't try the public indoor onsen, but the outside ones were lovely. Meals were beautiful and tasty and the servers were so kind. We also got an onsen pass and tried some other onsen in the town the following day - highly recommend but not needed with all the facilities here. It was a really nice treat to stay here.

Verified reviewThe property was beautifully presented with great attention to detail. The internal courtyard gardens were particularly beautiful.
We loved everything. The shower/bath arrangements would be unusual if you had had no experience with Japanese onsens. But we were very happy as we love onsens.

Verified reviewTop tier onsen with very reasonable price. I was surprised by the quality of their service although I have been to quite a few onsen resorts across Japan

Verified reviewAbsolutely fantastic hotel, extremely beautiful and peaceful with a number of private onsen to enjoy. The onsen were the most beautiful and clean that we had been to in Japan. The room was large, traditional and spacious. The food was delicious. I could not recommend this place more.
Nothing I didn’t like - but one tip would be (if you don’t have a car) to buy your bus tickets in advance here as you may not be able to buy them on the day!

Verified reviewThe room is very spacious and clean with foot bath and private onsen. The environment there is superb and i definitely will come back again.
The temperature for private onsen is abit too hot, which make it difficult to enjoy fully.

Verified reviewThe five private baths were such a bonus! We tried 3 of them. Our room, while a bit rustic was AMAZING and our dinner was very good - the saki flight was a super way to try 3 different types.
Its a tough question - we really enjoyed everything - if we had to pick, the fact the chef would not accommodate a pescatarian diet was disappointing considering the price was almost $800 Canadian for one night including dinner and breakfast which had a few meat options my husband couldn't eat. We asked in advance giving plenty of notice.

Verified reviewWhat an absolutely stunning traditional Japanese Ryokan. Nestled high in the mountains of hot spring resort we were welcomed in style with tea and cakes. The room was quite simply stunning with so many touches of tradition and elegance. Our own private hot spring bath was wonderful as were all the smaller rooms and balconies. We toured almost all of the many private and public baths on site and we especially enjoyed being able to share some of them as a family. The outdoor bath is an experience I will never forget. Our banquet meal was a treasure of new tastes and experiences and is an event that will live long in the memory. Thank you to all the staff who treated us like honoured guests. One night here just wasn’t enough.
Absolutely Nothing

It would be good if private onsen will provide shampoo and bath soap

Verified reviewService was excellent. Attentive and friendly staff. Walking distance to the onsen town. The outdoors baths (both private and public) were amazing. The onsen hopping was an enjoyabl experience. The whole inn was surrounded tastefully by nature and i loved the feeling of being submerged in nature and still have my urban creature comforts.
Nothing. The weather could have been better but it was part of the onsen charm.

Verified reviewThe service of the staff.
The outdoor onsen does not have bathing facilities and it is not linked to the indoor onsen. One has to walk outside to reach the outdoor onsen. The room rate is rather expensive compared to other cities in Kyushu.
