Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomThe weather was very hot (30+) and room didn't have air conditioning. The screen wasn't sealed so we had lots of insects in the room when we first opened the window, but once we turned out the lights it was ok and we still slept well. Part of the rustic ryokan experience in the mountains!
This is a simple ryokan style hotel near Mount Aso. Japanese style tatami room was lovely as expected. Buffet was plentiful but not the best quality The best part was some very tasty local melon. The location is great for visiting Mount Aso and the surrounding area. There is a small Kumamon-theme play area on the ground floor

Beautiful location and lots of things to do. Great location to explore the Aso National Park as well as Takachiho Gorge. Very good dinner and breakfast.

SingaporeThere was a weird arrangement where they wanted us to change rooms halfway during our stay, but they rectified it when we requested.

SpainStaff at the front desk were rather unfriendly and unhelpful. I have travelled in Japan many times and this is the only place that refused to send my luggage to the next accommodation.
Dinner and breakfast were very nice. The views were also impressive.

CanadaYes, a bit dated and lacking in old world or new world charm, but very good for the price one pays.
Stunning location. So many excellent food choices. Pleasant staff. I may have been the only non-Japanese patron the night I stayed. Not a bad thing - indeed probably a good thing - just something some readers might wish to know.

NetherlandsOld Japanese style hotel, requires an update but is ok for one night.
Resort hotel in the mountains, we booked including breakfast and dinner buffet - these were great with good choice, also for our (western) kids. Large basic rooms. Nice onsen (inside and outside) and beautiful surroundings. Kids play area.

United StatesOnly thing lacking is the dinner as its a buffet. I tried it the second night and went to go eat in the village instead. Don't let this deter you though, amazing value and great to just stare at the mountains from

United StatesThe property included a beautiful view! The rooms were a bit on the older side, but very clean. Amenities were available in the lobby. The food was delicious. The staff were friendly. We also enjoyed the drink counter and sweet potato evenings. As a family with little kids, the play area in the lobby was great!

United KingdomThe hotel is on the older side so there are some cosmetic scuffs and marks around, but it adds to its overall charm.
The room was comfy and cosy with an amazing view of Mt Aso. The hotel is right next to the visitor centre so we were able to go there first thing and check if it was safe to go up the mountain. The hotel buffet had a good variety of food and allergen labels. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Absolutely loved the late night snack of yaki-imo offered at the reception desk.

Hong KongWe have stayed in dated Japanese hotels before as they are pretty common in rural areas. I don’t need modern, but I do need clean. I had to clean the bath before I got in.
The view from the room was incredible: two huge mountains. The evening buffet had plenty on offer for all tastes and even enough for vegetarians. Location was good if you have a car.

SingaporeSleeping on the tatami was a bit uncomfortable as we are not used to it
Slightly old place, but I like the rustic feel. The meals, b/f & dinner were simple yet nice. The onsen was also great, able to soak in it after a whole day out in the cold :) The view we had was wonderful, facing the carpark and mountains :)

Hong KongThere is a big parking lot. As a resort hotel, it gives us pleasure and leisure with good foods and ample spaces. You can have a good view of the famous ridges of the Mount Aso from afar just outside the hotel. Also it is not far from the town and you should squeeze some time to drive to the town and visit the eki (train station) to appreciate its design and experience the tranquilty of a small town when the sun is about to set.

SingaporeNothing.
Liked this hotel very much. Although the rooms and facilities are a bit old, the services aren’t. We liked the fact that the half board is buffet style. The buffet spread is very good. We enjoyed the strawberries feast, of various varieties from kumamoto. There’s also drinks areas at the lobby that we can get at any time. And a small stall for baked sweet potatoes after dinner.. so cool! Staff are very friendly and helpful. Onsen is good as well.

MalaysiaCant think of anything, we had a satisfying stay here
This is one of the best ryokan I have stayed, its a typical traditional japanese style accommodation. The staffs are very friendly and most of them speak good english. The ryokan is easy to find and checking in was smooth. They are sort of expecting us and showed us our rooms instantly. The rooms are spacious and the sheets and futons are clean and comfortable. Our rooms overlooked a mountain which I think is Mr. Aso. The onsen is spacious and good. They have an outdoor onsen too overlooking the mountain. Their buffet dinner was sumptuous, we were spoiled with so many choices and varieties. The foods are endless. They even allowed us to take the fruits, snacks and coffee to enjoy in our rooms. The buffet breakfast was also very delicious and tasty. If only we have more time, we could walk outside enjoy the greens and excellent views of Mr. Aso. It is only 40 minutes to Takachiko Gorge and 30 mins to Mr. Aso by car. Would definitely recommend this gem.

CanadaHotel was a bit outdated compared to the photos in terms of amenities and the rooftop was closed during our visit in late September. Hotel was very family accommodating had play pen for kids and toys in the lobby.
Loved the views and the traditional Japanese tatami styled rooms. It felt like grandma’s place back in the 90s. Room was very spacious and tatami beds were comfortable. Location was really convenient with ample of parking and 5mins drive to grocery store. View of mount Aso was absolutely amazing though. Second floor had laundry.
