How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI stayed at “Bungo-no-Ie (House of Great Author)”, a 5-minute walk from the community building where reception is located, in a tatami Japanese-style room for three people on the 2nd floor. I booked a dormitory, but ended up with a Japanese-style room for three people at “Bungo-no-Ie”. Comments about “Bungo-no-Ie” I stayed at: Good points... - The ocean can be seen from the room on the 2nd floor, and the view is nice (probably only one room). - One hair dryer. - Kitchen (a few cooking utensils. Not well organized or clean). - Two bicycles are available in the community building, and are free to use. - There is a supermarket nearby! Other points... - No WiFi or air conditioning. - Towels and amenities are charged. - 1 toilet, 1 bathroom, and 1 sink on the 1st floor. - Futon beds are always laid out in the rooms, and there are no desks or tables. - When you check in, you need choose two books from the bookshelf (Not necessarily have to read them). Request... - I would like a small partition at head level to ensure a minimum of privacy in the dormitory room.
- No trash cans (you have to put your trash in a suitable plastic bag yourself and carry it to the community building). - The garden is a bit overgrown (not a relaxing atmosphere). - At night, it is too dark inside the building to find the light switch. - No shower toilet. - There are no guide signs on the way from the community building to the room, so it's easy to get lost if you're not used to it.

Verified reviewThis guest house is perfectly suited for those seeking company and eager to meet people. For example, shared breakfasts and evening meals were organised by the staff each day of my stay for those willing to join, the latter usually followed by discussion or games up to bedtime. I left this Japanese traditional house with the feeling to have shared a few days with old friends I hadn't met in a while.
Thanks mate!! I really enjoyed talking with you! That was exactly cultural exchange! I’d like to know your country more when you come to the Setouchi Life again. All the best!!!

Verified reviewThe location is nice, in a remote village nearby the sea. The room has a nice view.
The main problem is that the room was not clean. There was dust, hairs and even nails on the tatamis where we sleep. The sheets didn't seem clean either. This is not acceptable, especially considering the price of the room. Maybe the staff (or volunteers?) forgot to clean the room just this time, I can't say. But what I can say for sure is that, in this case, the cleaning was very disappointing to say the least.
My apology. Now we have a decent routine after our guests check out. So you won’t have a room which isn’t clean enough. I hope you’ll find interesting things of this place next time☺️

Verified reviewIt was a wonderful experience. The house is typically Japanese, beautiful and cozy. The view is incredible and the people, whether in the guesthouse (staff) or in the village, are very nice. This place and this accommodation were a highlight of my trip. It is recommended to spend several days/nights there to enjoy to the fullest and spend time with the host/staff or have dinner together. A real local experience with the kindest people! I will definitely visit this place again!
Thank you very much for choosing our guesthouse! If your time at our guesthouse We would be most happy if it was something that brightened your life! Please come back and visit us again!

Verified reviewI was going to stay 1 night, but Setouchi Life and the surrounding area were so amazing I ended up staying for 4 nights!. The staff were super lovely and kind. My 'dorm' bed was a room of my own with doors opening on to a sea view. I loved being able to make and share dinner with everyone - to chat about life and our travels. This is a beautiful area (sunsets to die for!), it was great to be able to experience a slice of the 'real Japan' and stay in some lovely old houses. This was a great spot to stop and relax during my cycle tour. ❤️.
Nothing, I loved it all. I will be back!

Verified reviewThe welcoming atmosphere and project character of the guesthouse where you get to meet locals and have wonderful conversations with them and other travelers. Also the island with its many attractions is well worth visiting. And last but not least the super friendly staff who are always there to help you and have a good time!

Verified reviewNice and cozy room in a quiet and pretty neighborhood. The balcony was a highlight. Possible to cook meals in the kitchen. The staff were so kind and helpful. The other guests as well. It was fun to talk to everyone but also possible to have quiet time.
The rooms are not very sound proof so whenever someone walked outside or talked you would hear it. If there are many guests, especially children, you will hear them in the morning.

Verified reviewThe owner of the location was incredibly kind and encouraging. He was very helpful and made the experience very fun. If I asked any questions, he would quickly try to find a solution. The check-in location was very unique and pretty. It was very close to nature. The bed area was close to nature as well. It felt like I was on an adventure. I liked it a lot.

Verified reviewKind of clean and quiet
Paying 30$ per night to sleep in a ghost town on the floor is not a pleasant experience. The owner saying that he has only 1 room left for “mixed dorm” while the reality is that he brings you to random abandoned houses in the village. So there were actually many rooms left (they’re not dorms) and on booking showing that the female ones are cheaper… Once arrived at the place there was no wifi, so we had to walk another 10 minutes to another house with wifi. There is only one supermarket in the entire town and it’s kind of pricy. At least they have a kitchen so I’ve been able to cook some food.

Verified reviewThe hosts were amazing! Good English and they were patient with my attempts at Japanese as well. The rooms are in a separate building within a walking distance, but uphill. It was ok for me, but people with walking difficulties might not be able to make it. The bathroom in the separate building exceeded expectations. Cheap laundry options. The bathtub was large enough for a tall European to fit in completely. The view from up the hill was amazing. There's an onsen on the south part of the island that you can visit via bus.
The closest convenience store is a bit far away, but still walkable. The clinics in the town don't accept foreigners.

Verified reviewThis place is very comfortable. It is quiet and the staff is friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. The staff informed us nicely about a wide range of things to do in the neighbourhood and gave us more background on the history of the city and the guesthouse. The guesthouse is well situated in a calm area with a few fun attractions such as a beach and sake brewery. But the hostel is fun on its own, as guests have space to work on their own art, cook a dinner for the guesthouse, read Japanese books or have fun conversations about the world.
Little to nothing. The bike rental could be improved. One bike was a little bit small and requesting the bike was a little bit difficult.

Verified reviewIt feels like a family. We were cooking and having dinner together 😊 I had lots of unique experiences by meeting the people in the village and talking to them. Acchan took me and other guests to the Sake brewery for a tasting and showed us around. I liked the experience so much that I cancelled my further travel plans and volunteered for a week.
Thanks for being part of our family, we enjoyed a lot visiting the town and the brewery with you. Also, you became like part of our family and helped us for a week as a volunteer even though you were supposed to stay for two nights!. We will have our memories with anna for the rest of our lives. If you come back to Japan, Please come and visit us as you had a family here waiting for you.
