Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

RussiaBaths are small, and heating in the room is either very strong or too light. No dining options if you arrive in the evening. One noodle soup in the vending machine.

JapanWe booked at the lake side on the fly for one night (19,500 JPY made October 2024) and then decided to extend another one. The second night was then 45% more expensive... should have thought earlier. The hotel is large and we stayed in the annex very nearby in a large comfortable room. The hotel itself gives a good quality impression and I suppose it used to be quite upscale. I have the feeling that Nikko is a bit out of fashion these days for overnight visitors and further up on the Chusenji lake that can be felt too. There is no restaurant in this hotel and breakfast has to be booked in advance. Anyway in the evening it is very quiet up there and one might be quite desperately searching for a place to have dinner. Parking right in front of the reception or nearby.

Very nice Japanese breakfast. Kind staff. They accept people with tattoos in the onsen.

JapanThere was no chef so you couldn't use the restaurant, and there were very limited options in the vending machine. There was no way to cool the room, only a thermostat to heat it, and you could not open the window due to bugs.
The hotel has nice decorations and is quaint. The location is great for seeing lake chuzenji.

JapanIt is a beautiful building by the lake. My plan was to visit Chuzanji Lake, Kegonfalls, and Riyuzu waterfalls, and then it was a perfect location for me. Onsen was good, and the receptionist was very smart and friendly. Highly recommend for those who want to stay out of town in a quiet, nice place.

DenmarkThe downside of the remote and calm surroundings do mean that restaurants and other options for food are limited in the area, Nikko is about 30 minutes driving away so if you have a rental car you'll be fine. We stayed in the japanese style room which was a nice experience, but if you prefer a softer bed to sleep in you will probably struggle with the thinner futon beds.
The location was great in a calm area close to the lake. When checking in we received very friendly greetings from the staff. Access to the onsen area was included in the price. Healthy japanese style breakfast.

DenmarkThe location is slightly out-of-the way, which may not be a bad thing.
The onsen is small but great! Indoor bath (uchiburo), gender-separated. The water has a slight sulphur-smell, but not overwhelming. It is milky-white and prickles your skin slightly afterwards. The locals use the onsen as well. The japanese-style room are authentic and huge (by japanese standard).

SwitzerlandThe staff was friendly but barely spoke english. I spoke some japanese so it was fine. But something to be improved for other tourists I find.
Rooms are very big and comfy, onsen is small but very nice to enjoy. Nikko is quiet and calm and so was this location. Breakfast included was the right choice because it‘s hard to find something to eat nearby especially in the morning. Ryokan is amazingly beautiful and futon was adequate.

United StatesIf you’re not aware that the location is fairly hard to reach to and don’t have a plan for meals, it might be challenging. But I knew about those things and the stay felt extra special
Honestly everything. It’s not the most modern hotel but to me it has his charm. The traditional bedroom is beautiful and so big. Only 8 rooms in the property so not many people on site, I was almost always alone in the onsen. I recommend taking a walk down the lake from the property and explore. This was such a relaxing stay for me, I loved it.
