How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat location, staff is friendly and speaks Japanese and English. Staff is diverse (rare in Japan) so nice to see some minority representation in a rural area like this.
The room was dirty and smelled weird. The view wasn't great. Onsen hot spring was great but the hot spring facilities were dirty and the floor was slimy. The vending machine doesn't have any snacks and you can't order dinner on the day of your arrival. Everything in the area closes at 5 so if you show up without any food you are out of luck. There is also no coffee in the vending machine or the room so you're on your own for that too. The web page also said our room could sleep four but there were only three futon and they were some of the most uncomfortable futon I've used in my 18 years in Japan. We would have stacked two together if there were four as advertised but we were left one short. Barely slept. I've used this hotel on several occasions and each time I go the facilities are dirtier and worse than the previous time. This place would be better than average if a night cost about half as much, but as it is, there is a significantly better hotel 5 minutes closer to Kegon Falls and the main bus stop back into town for just a few thousand yen more.

Verified reviewVery amazing and unexpected unique hotel ! We liked it very much ! Very traditional, we had breakfast and evening meal , Very Japanese traditional and exactly what you need for a fully traditional experience in japan ! The location is unique, the way to the location is unique as well , we were really surprised in the best way possible . I recommend to spend at least a night in this hotel if you want to visit nikko waterfalls and forest ! Just be aware that it's not a short way to Nikko train station , but the bus is driving just beside the hotel

Verified reviewLocation is amazing
Baths are small, and heating in the room is either very strong or too light. No dining options if you arrive in the evening. One noodle soup in the vending machine.

Verified review1.The room was very spacious, with a large window. 2. The indoor onsen was soothing 3. Hotel lobby is spacious 4. The lightings outside the hotel is rather inviting and help guide guests to locate the hotel when the sky turns dark
1. The staff hardly understand English, which can be very frustating. Thankfully there's a Sri Lankan lady staff who is very friendly and helpful to attend to guest's query even during her bed time. 2. Housekeeping needs to step up. Bedsheets have stains and were messy in the closet.

Verified reviewWe booked at the lake side on the fly for one night (19,500 JPY made October 2024) and then decided to extend another one. The second night was then 45% more expensive... should have thought earlier. The hotel is large and we stayed in the annex very nearby in a large comfortable room. The hotel itself gives a good quality impression and I suppose it used to be quite upscale. I have the feeling that Nikko is a bit out of fashion these days for overnight visitors and further up on the Chusenji lake that can be felt too. There is no restaurant in this hotel and breakfast has to be booked in advance. Anyway in the evening it is very quiet up there and one might be quite desperately searching for a place to have dinner. Parking right in front of the reception or nearby.

Verified reviewVery nice Japanese breakfast. Kind staff. They accept people with tattoos in the onsen.
No restaurants or grocery shops nearby and the vending machine was out of options. No dinner sold apart, only if you buy along with the package.

Verified reviewThe hotel has nice decorations and is quaint. The location is great for seeing lake chuzenji.
There was no chef so you couldn't use the restaurant, and there were very limited options in the vending machine. There was no way to cool the room, only a thermostat to heat it, and you could not open the window due to bugs.
