Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

Washing mashine instruction said, that detergent is already inside but it seems that this was not the case, so we needed to try a second time with our own detergent.
Rooms, milk and cereal, Arashiyama sourrounding, possibility to wash clothes.

Excellent location. Very clean, bright, and well-decorated house. This is our first time staying in someone else's home/guest house, but it was very comfortable. We did not meet the owners, but very responsive to messages and very helpful!

Everything was perfect
We had a great stay with the homestay, very clean and new facility, friendly and helpful host. the location is great, perfect for exploring Arashiyama early morning to avoid the crowd. We will love to come back and stay if we have a chance.

The property is not in the middle of the hustle and bustle, but the neighbourhood it's located in has a wonderful relaxed vibe to it. The host speaks English well enough to get most of her points across but personally, her kindness and hospitality are what shines through and more than makes up for any language barrier you might face.

It is very convenient to some of the famous temples I wanted to visit , only 3 minutes from bus stop , 5 minutes from train station . The price is very good . The owner Uno is very friendly . Breakfast was served with milk and cereal. I will definitely try to stay here again next time when I visit Kyoto

Little concerned that the communal front door didn’t have a security lock(You could just walk in and out). However that was no problem 😊 (I come from an area that if you don’t nail it down it disappears 😢)
Exceptional property located a short train ride away from Kyoto. Host was quick to respond to messages. A Lounge/Kitchen area was provided so that you could get some breakfast.

Didn't realise it was shared bathroom and toilet. This was kept clean and wasn't inconvenient.
Kitchen available and had some supplies. All kept clean. Building and rooms attractive. Washing machine that also drys. Staff very helpful and Uno spoke English and walked with us to the mini Mart and helped us with getting icoco card. Location was a short walk to the bridge and downtown.

There was nothing I didn't like about neither facilities nor host, but what upset me was that some of the other guests had left a mess in the common kitchen, and seeing the kind-hearted host solemnly cleaning up their mess broke my heart a bit.
The host was so nice and kind! He spoke excellent English, and was very accommodating. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone going to Arashiyama. Great location, too!

We stayed in a triple tatami room for 1 night. The room is small for 3 people with size of 3 tatami and a table. We didn't have big luggage bags but backpacks only so merely good for us. The tatami is so thin to sleep on. Better to install hanging racks with hangers to hang clothes and stuff.
The place is newly renovated and quiet; clean and tidy. The owner provided snacks and coffee/tea in the common living room. Shower place is spacious. There is a small balcony in our room which is on the ground floor.

Please, be aware this is not a hotel but Airbnb type of accommodation- owner lives in the house but is not always home. It is important to let him know exact time of your arrival. I was lost in Kyoto temples and arrived later than I notified , so nobody was there... Do not panic, text the owner ( on Booking.com) and he will turn up soon.
