How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt’s such a cute little hotel with very friendly staff! We were given Yukatas to wear, and also wooden sandals to wear them around town. The kids loved it, it was such a special adventure for them :) We can really recommend this hotel!

Verified reviewNothing
The bathroom, toilet, and sink are in three different corners of the and after using the toilet you have to cross diagonally the room to reach the sink. The bathroom is old and has a bad smell. The mattresses were thin and not comfortable. The linen didn't cover the whole mattress. The staff didn't speak English. The breakfast was poor, the worst we had in 45 mornings in Japan. There was no way to open the windows and the curtains didn't prevent the sunlight so the room was in full light very early. The wifi amplifier was on the floor touching my pillow.

Verified reviewIt was great to experience a tradition japanese accomodation, and it was very clean and comfy. The staff didn't speak English but we managed to communicate via translation. They served a vegetarian breakfast, that was good, but contaibing eggs, despite we have said that we were vegans. Because they didn't have many guests, they allowed to use the hot spring as a couple, what was also very nice.
We got lost in translation, or they the staff don't have proper knowledge about veganism, but their attempt to help us was appreciated.

Verified reviewThe staff was so nice! I wish I could rate it 11/10. They even gave us a lift to the Snow Monkey Park in the morning which was terrific because we were able to enjoy the park before crowds arrived. And we could store our luggage during the park visit and pick it up later. Additionally, there is a great onsen in their basement and our room was very nice and clean. Close proximity to the train station. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Verified reviewFriendly owner, who gave us a free ride to the Snow Monkeys and lent us gumboot as the track was muddy. Room was upgraded and was spacious with a pretty view of the mountains. Onsen was nice, however the women's was small. Really close to the station. The town was quiet as was off season, however there were still dinner options.
Building could do with some exterior and interior maintenance.

Verified reviewWe loved our stay at Rakki Onsen! The location is about a 2 minute walk from the Yudanaka train station (which had the most amazing restaurant called Goen). The hotel was simple but very comfortable, clean and accommodating. The hotel owner made sure we had everything we needed and is the absolute sweetest person. Her joy is contagious. She drove us to the snow monkey entrance (which saved a pretty good walk from the bus station) and provided a huge breakfast each morning. We had the onsen to ourselves each time we used it. It closes from 9am-3pm for cleaning so I would use it at 7am and again before and after dinner.
We liked everything!

Verified reviewDO NOT BOOK THIS ACCOMMODATION. No redeeming features other than its proximity to the train station.
DO NOT BOOK THIS ACCOMMODATION. We had to check-out within one hour of arrival it was so bad, and we lost all our money. It is a flea-infested, smelly and filthy ryokan. The smell from the bathroom attached to our bedroom was repugnant. The smell in the elevator was so bad they had to use air freshener constantly. The onsen in the basement is not fit for human use. How this’s ryokan received a good rating is questionable. It needs to be checked by the health authorities.
Thank you for staying. Is the reason for your departure what you said? I hope you tell the truth. Because you checked out on the same day, we cannot refund your room fee. Everyone's eyes are bright, welcome to stay at the hotel to verify whether what she said is right or wrong. 😀Wish you a pleasant journey!

Verified reviewSuch a great family, so welcoming and comfortable. Clean and hot onset, perfectly situated to relax and refresh after a day in the snow! Host is so warm and helpful, arranged transportation that was not needed and offered support for places to eat and visit. Comfy, spacious rooms. Fantastic breakfast!
Not sure if there was anything offered at night in the restaurant when we were there. It just may have been out of the wrong season, but we would have liked to spend some time with our host they were so nice.
