We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustriaThe rooms are quite outdated. Be aware that theres is only an outdoor shower. no indoor bathroom. Despite of that the air condition creates a very dry atmosphere.
If you want original japanese feeling. it is the place to be. Breakfast and dinner were of outstanding quality. The staff tried everything,to make it for you an unforgetable expierence. The hot private Onsen is an extra plus for those who stay in winter time.

CanadaWe enjoyed everything about this lovely, small ryokan. Almost no English is spoken here as very few western tourists visits. Google Translate was a life saver. The owner is incredibly friendly and helpful. Our room was large and our private onsen was amazing! Both dinner and breakfast were ample and delicious. We took full advantage of our time here and had a wonderful stay. Parking is easy and the location is great - not far from Kumamoto. Perfect for a one-night, special stay.

United StatesEverything was perfect for our stay. We went to enjoy an Onsen and to relax and Yayanoya met those expectations. Each room has wifi for those who need to stay connected.
Location is 45 minutes by car/cab from Kumamoto Station in a very quiet cluster of homes and a few other Ryokans. Each room has a private out-door Onsen and shower/bathing area in a well-kept garden setting. Water had a silky feeling and slight Sulphur smell and soaking was very relaxing. Staff only speak Japanese, but with Google translator communicating was no problem. The staff was very helpful and attentive. We sat in the bar area and the manager came over to offer drinks and arranged for a taxi for our return to Kumamoto. She asked about dinner and breakfast time for our group and reserved our table. Dinner was Kaiseki and included starting aperitif, appetizers, shijimi clam miso soup, green "glass" salad, sashimi, prawn. An individual pot of rice was started at each seat, then courses including abalone, crab, Wagu beef and vegetables, pumpkin soup and dessert. It was 5-star quality and presentation. Breakfast was just as impressive, fresh-baked butter rolls, grilled saba, mentaiko, pork sausage, slice of tamagoyaki, miso soup and steaming hot rice with an optional raw egg. All delicious. .

New ZealandNot applicable. It was a really good experience.
Very relaxing and private getaway. The rooms are very generous for 1-2 people. The private onsen was really hot and worked a treat. Food was exceptional for both dinner and breakfast. Wouldn't hesitate to doing this experience again if I am back in Kumamoto again. The hosts were very accommodating.

United KingdomThe only downside was the slightly inconvenient location, should you not drive whilst in Japan. However, it's still very accessible if you want to go there.
Albeit a bit out of the way, especially if you don't drive, the hospitality and quality of the rooms & food provided are by far worth the trip. My wife and I went here as part of our honeymoon trip, and after travelling by bus for an hour (from Kumamoto) and a 20-minute walk in torrential rain with a suitcase each, we arrived to be greeted warmly and for them to help dry off our suitcases and shoes without even asking. We were given a little basket each and were asked to pick some items to make our stay comfortable, such as face wash, toothbrush/paste, hair brush, socks, and a yukata. You could choose your own which was a nice touch. The room we stayed in was very sizable and led out back to a gorgeous private onsen. The dinner we had was 7 courses, consisting of whatever local seasonal foods they had. So a range of different vegetables, fish, crab & meat. The quality of the food was phenomenal, and the staff were very professional yet friendly. I speak limited Japanese and they speak limited English but they were committed to communicating with us about the food to make sure we had the best dining experience. We each left a sizable amount of rice as we were full by the end, and the staff offered to use the remaining to make onigiri for us to take with us! The breakfast the following morning was also of very high quality, and plenty of it too! This again came in a number of courses and was delicious. We would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a lovely experience at a Ryokan that has a private onsen. I couldn't ask for a better staff to give you a fantastic stay.

United StatesNothing! Exceeding my expectations
When searching for a ryokan with a private in room hot spring , (onsen), I came across Yanyanoyu and it’s a literal “Heaven on earth.” From the moment we arrived, the manager Kondo and the staff made us feel welcomed and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. I mentioned I lost my phone in Tokyo before arriving and Kondo took it upon himself to phone the police station to double check if my phone was turned in. There is a small bar/rest area where we had self serve alcohol and soft drinks, coffee, and sweets (due to it being the owner’s birthday month; lucky us)! We got to pick our own yukatas to wear and I was provided a small bag of Mimi (not sure the correct name) cosmetics that included face cream, lotion, and cleanser. We stayed in the room that starts with “Z” and it was very spacious. The hot spring bath was surrounded by lush garden and the cold water hose allowed us to tone down the bath water if it was too hot. I saw someone else complain about that shower temperature— that is false; you simply need to wait a few minutes for the shower water to heat up. Breakfast and dinner was immaculate; the chef studied in Italy and Japan so we had a fusion of Japanese/Italian meals; Kondo also served us drinks after each course! The dinner area faces a very intimate garden. Also, I appreciated the jazz music played throughout the Ryokan. Other attendants we’re very kind in providing us water and towels as needed. Additionally, Kondo took us to a local town, paid for our tickets to the museum and showed us local sites including cherry blossom lane. And when we needed to head to the airport, Kondo drove us himself. As an avid traveler, this ryokan is a gem providing 5 star service all while situated in a place that feels down to earth — and the employees that go above and beyond to display their kindness. We hope to come back! Arigatou ☺️

Singaporethe Ryokan Manager, Mr. Kondo, has paid much attention to the finer details to really enhance the guest experience. Quality of food and drink were excellent, as were the facilities and service staff. Mr. Kondo himself was especially helpful with us when we encountered challenges with our onward travel arrangements and went out of his way to advise and even personally organized a solution for us. That is really going the extra mile to see to guests' needs. This truly made our holiday in Japan a wonderful experience with Yayanoyu being the highlight. TH MR. KONDO
