Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNot so easy to reach from the Kyoto station. We decided to take a cab. The room was very small but still bigger than one we had in Tokyo for which we paid more. Had only two washing machines and staff refused to empty the one that was already finished for about an hour, but there was a launderette close by which had plenty
As in other similar hotels we visited in Japan, there were a lot of toiletries and other things available for free in the hotel. We also used the laundromat. Close to Nijo castle and some shops. For the price we paid, it was incredible though because we only paid £60 for two people for two nights. They have a machine that can do the check-in but there was staff at the desk when we checked in and he also helped us later to change some yen banknotes into coins. More comfortable than other hotels we stayed in too and had two pillows instead of just one

NetherlandsPublic transportation is close by, but still a bit of a walk, specially when traveling with many suitcases. Would recommend this place for young people traveling light, not for families.
Good stay in Kyoto. A bit further away from the more touristic spots, but with plenty to do close by still. Rooms were small but cozy, not excessive small. Lots of shops close by for breakfast before you start your day or dinner before coming back to the hotel, including a super market.

SingaporeNot much to dislike, though the additional taxes makes the prices not so cheap.
Place feels very new (as of July 2025), nice and neat when we checked in. Bathroom /toilet has everything we need, all fixtures look brand new. Location is not too bad, but the first time we took a tiring long walk with full luggage under the rain cos we chose the wrong (slightly further) subway station to come out of. Should have used Nijojo Mae Station instead of Nijo Station. There's a sheltered shopping street nearby, where all the usual restaurants and grocery stores can be found. Staff was friendly, check-in was smooth. Entry at main lobby and rooms are by security codes, so no need to carry any key along.

AustraliaThe bed was hard, but all beds in Japan are a bit hard.
Location is excellent. Close to public transport and attractions. The staff were excellent too. Very helpful and always someone around when I needed someone. The washing/dryer was very convenient. But there were only 2. Thankfully they were free both times we went to use them.

The property is pretty new, the rooms are very spacious, beds and pillows very comfy, nice bathroom. Easy check in. So close to Nijo Castle and Nijo Station. Relatively close to other stations to go to the Bamboo forest area

United StatesSmall room for three people. There is not much space for luggage or anything else. Bathroom was small as well.
It is located within a residential area, near Nijo castle. Two blocks south is a market and a community park. The staffs were extremely friendly and helpful. You can take either bus or train to all of the tourist attractions, and more.

DenmarkI would like to be closer to the main attractions, therefore the location for me was a bit too far. Often times there is no staff physically at this hotel if you need help, but they advertise this from the start, so it will not come as a surprise to you. Self check-in and check-out
Stayed here for 3 nights. A very nice smaller hotel, with pin code to open the front door and your room door as well. The room have what you need, fridge, tv, good wifi, nice cosy bed and decent size bathroom. At the reception there is a microwave to heat up your food, washing machine and smoking area. About 5 min walk to the nearest bus stop which you can take to get to the central parts of Kyoto. For the price, this is a very good accommodation.

ItalyThe room was too small for three people. The third bed (movable) was placed where you were supposed to open your luggage. Therefore, we could open one luggage at a time and that was pretty annoying.
The position is great, close to the Nijo castle and public transport. The room was clean, and the staff very kind. It had a laundry and smoking room. Recommended
