Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

GermanyBathrooms, showers and the kitchen are shared with other guests, which is not a problem. What made it difficult was the lack of curtains for the window and the Japanese door that made sleeping quality terrible.
The location is great.

United StatesI was expecting a private bath, so was a bit disappointed to be on the 2nd floor with a shared toilet/bath. If a private bathroom is important to you, be sure to specify as the first floor has its own bathroom.
The location was excellent and communication from the host was also great. The room was simple and clean

AustraliaNo staff to check in, which feels a bit impersonal. We have been enjoying talking to the hosts, getting their recommendations and being welcomed. The beds were uncomfortable, the futon didn't lie flat for some reason as it had bulky bits in it. And although the space was clean at the beginning, we noticed throughout the days that no one came to empty the bins while we were there.
The location was great, we also liked the layout and decoration, everything was clean when we arrived, and because there were no other guests on our floor, the area was spacious.

CanadaThe others staying were inconsiderate when it came to sharing the laundry facilities. A family on the first floor threw in their laundry around 9am and left, we’ve waited and took a stroll and ate, each time we came back their clothes were still in there. By 10pm they were still in there, a note for other guests to be around and continue their laundry through the day so others can start as well would be nice, other than that the entire stay was pleasant!
Location was perfect, can’t get much better than the gion area, there was always something for you around the corner. It was a nice getaway from the big city buildings!

New ZealandWe were moved to a different property as this was was not available so I can comment on the other one. That one was closer to the city centre. It was my first time sleeping on a Japanese Tatami floor and Mat and I found it a little hard :) my sisters who were with me enjoyed it and did not have trouble sleeping. We enjoyed it as it was our only stay in a traditional house in the month around Japan.

United KingdomIt’s not near a JR line if you want to use a pass but the 206 is cheap and easy to use. Like most ryokans it can be a bit noisy but I wasn’t disturbed.
Amazing location for just wandering around and getting to main sites. Easy access to busses and subway. Big room and very close to toilet. Would definitely recommend.

NetherlandsThe bed was not great. After having travelled through Japan for almost a month, I can say that these were, unfortunately, by far the worst futon beds. Even with two on top of each other, my hips hurt the next morning.
This place for us was all about the location. We never met with any of the staff, but they were very responsive on the Booking.com chat. The place was clean, and on a very quiet street, yet close to so many awesome sights and restaurants.

EstoniaOn pictures rooms looked bigger, but on spot it’s a real small Japanese room. Pay attention on it. Also keep on mind that it’s a Classical Japanese Home, so there is no noise isolation. You hear everything what happens in neighbor room and they hear you also.
Japanese style - all clean and tidy! Best location for Kyoto imho, as historical part is in the neighborhood.

PolandA little narrow staircase, so tough with larger luggage, but if I could do it and I'm not particularly fit, then most other people wouldn't struggle either. There's just no space for the elevator.
Very clean place and facilities, has the Japanese ryokan feel but don't mistake this for the environment being outdated. From kitchen to bathroom and toilet and rooms - everything is shiny and new. The closeness of the popular areas is a huge plus, easy to get to by bus from the main train station (bus 206), the fare is fixed (230yen for adult). Even though you don't meet the owners, the communication through booking.com is immaculate, very responsibe and attentive to your needs or any issues. There's a washing machine and liquid you can use (no coins needed), you can use the little drying rack if you prefer not to tumble dry your clothes.

AustraliaWalls are (literally) paper thin with shoji doors, including for the toilet, so any guests making noise any time of night, or crying babies in other rooms, is extremely audible.

French PolynesiaThe staircase is extremely narrow and it's not great at all for those who have to bring luggage to the upper floors.
Great location in Gion, close to temples such as Daikakuji, Yasaka shrine and Kiyomizudera a few minutes away. The place has been renovated and everything works perfectly.

ThailandWifi is not strong 😔. I thought there was a private bathroom (I mean the bathroom inside the room). But it's ok 👌 It's sheared only for 2 rooms and very clean.
I like the location. The apartment is not too far from the Kiyomisu temple. The rooms are so clean 💕.
