How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewOwner and staffs are all lovely. There are not so organized with bookings but gave us chill island vibes.
It’s a bit pricy I found for this type of lodging with shared bath. But they had breakfast included so that made us relaxed a lot to eat together.

Verified reviewI loved staying here and would like to return one day. The room was perfect and the staff friendly though no English. Loved the breaky and onsen. Forgot hiking boots and was able to hire them from the minshuku.

Verified reviewThis is a really nice hotel, if you want to explore Yakushima. The owners are very nice and will help you with any problems, that occur. You should speak japanese though, because the communication in english could be hard. As I speak japanese I can not fully evaluate this though. You can get breakfast and lunchboxes for hiking days from the inn. In theory there is also dinner, but as in many small japanese inns, just like breakfast it can be booked out sometimes. We had both breakfast and lunchboxes and both were absolutely nice and not expensive at all. If you go hiking you might as well rent hiking boots for a small price. The inn has a community bath, that is a traditional japanese bath with showers and a hot bath. You might have to share it, though at later times it is often not used by many customers. We were staying with three people, which can be a bit muggy in one room depending on the weather, but it is still a great inn.

Verified reviewThe meals were excellent, a real treat. They were both tasty and a chance to experience local culture. Even our 12 year old kid enjoyed them. The location was very convenient. We arrived by bus from the port - there is a bus stop right in front of the minshuku - and rented a car for the next few days (convenient parking available in front of the minshuku). The owners are very nice and friendly, though they don't speak much English. Although we were told ahead of time that it is possible to pay only by cash, there was no problem to pay by credit card.

Verified reviewFantastic concept the minshuku. Roomy deluxe double futon room excellent storage, facilities worked really well. Each room had its own wash basin, bar fridge and table. A washing machine and dryer was available to use The cost was excellent for room only but q high if adding breakfast and dinner ie $250 dbb vs $90 bed only. Very friendly and helpful staff. Seemed you could hire hiking boots, sticks, waterproof gear.
There was a little water damage around the window needing attention.

Verified reviewWonderful location in a traditional Japanese style hotel. Staff very friendly and loved the onsen shower experience! Fresh towels and yukata every day. Convenient location with bus stop right next door.
Room not fully clean and could not contact the host via booking website - which made it impossible to amend our booking in advance.

Verified reviewBus stop #32"高校前” just in font of hostel - just 10 min walk to the supermarket. There have a few restaurants nearby but not always open, better to reserve dinner at hostel. Also, you can order bento at hostel - The host is nice and very helpful, he drives us to the nearest bus stop for go to Shiratani Unsuikyo, but a little bit difficult to communicate with English - room is clean and tidy, share bathroom and wash room.

Verified reviewCharming minshuku with super helpful staff and very many amenities eg free washing machine and dryer, good onsen, v good meals . My room was spotlessly clean and had a wash basin . The minshuku is about 40 min walk from the port though it’s also on a bus route . There is an Indian restaurant and a large supermarket within easy walking distance .

Verified reviewSupplies bentos and hiking gear for rent. Staff was very nice
When I arrived, they said that they were overbooked and brought me to a hotel down the street which was not as nice. I didn't protest too much, but it's hard for me to accurately rate because of this.

Verified reviewA traditional place to stay. Roll up futons on the floor so many people could stay in one room which is suitable for hiking groups. They hire out walking shoes and snorkling gear if needed. Shared toilet but very clean. Showering facilities were the onsen downstairs but it was good. Breakfast and tea available but we didn't use these facilities.
