Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Hong KongAdmittedly, the road up to the cottage is very narrow and windy. But that is typical for Wakayama. I wouldn’t say the road is any more challenging than the other roads in the area.
Wonderfully charming mountain cottage. The cottage itself has everything a visitor needs — comfortable futons, good shower and bathroom, kitchen and, most importantly, a deck that looks out across the mountains to the sea. We visited on a hot August day, but the cottage enjoyed a fresh breeze that immediately cooled us off. I would highly recommend the cottage.

AustraliaBeautiful view, only 20 minute drive to Nachi temple and falls. http://kumanonachitaisha.or.jp/ The host is wonderful, fully stocked kitchen including homegrown rice, blueberry jam and basic condiments like oil and we were lucky to pick some fresh blueberries (in season). Directions are a bit tricky. Here are some tips so you start your joyous stay at this accommodation well … If driving use Maps and take route 43, be careful on the road, it is narrow. When you get to the destination following maps, locate the bus stop and look up the hill, the property is above the bus stop, you should be able to see the cottage past the large garden. If you are looking at the bus stop the driveway is to the left, just beyond the bus stop and faces back towards the property on 45 angle. Steep drive up.

AustraliaThe WiFi is a little bit annoying to connect to but works well once connected
The view was absolutely stunning! The cottage is super cute and homely. We got the fire going and were able to warmup and dry off after our hike in the rain. Katsuruo Ura is extremely friendly and made us feel right at home. He picked us up from the end of our hike (Nachisan) and dropped us off at the train station the next day. He also took us to the supermarket so that we could buy groceries for dinner. His homemade blueberry jam is delicious!

United KingdomI feel very lucky to have stayed here! There’s a wood burning stove to keep the place warm, a beautiful view over the hills down to the sea and everything you need like saucepans and frying pans to cook dinner. Katsuro picked us up from Nachi when we finished the Kumano Kodo trail and drove us to a supermarket and then to the property which was really kind and made everything really easy.

MalaysiaNothing!
Our stay here, for a party of four, is, I must say, the highlight of our Wakayama travel, and a fitting end to my Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. We love the blueberry jam the owner, Mr Ura, makes, and the rice he grows. We love the sunrise from the patio. We could just relax here and not do anything. But with our car, we managed to drive to the coast, as well as to Nachi Fall. Mr Ura has been very concerned about making our stay comfortable and safe, right from giving us instructions on how to drive here, and avoiding driving in the dark, to welcoming us as well as seeing us off after we checked out .

ChinaThe wifi is a hit or miss.
Best accommodation one could ask for the end of Kumano Kodo. Ura-san, the owner of the property was extremely kind and understanding, even with my many changes to the pick-up time. The rice and blueberries grown by him were delicious. The property is spacious and clean with a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Easily a 12/10 would recommend

PortugalThis property and its owner are amazing! Katsukuro provided us with the most authentic and magical Japanese experience. Picked us up at the train station, took us to the supermarket and then dropped us at his cabin. The cabin is in a hill, featuring an amazing view. Has a kitchen where you can cook, a typical bedroom where you can experience sleeping in a mattress on the floor and a typical wooden bathroom. Everything was really clean. Highly recommend this experience to anyone!

United KingdomThe only thing we didn't like is that we only stayed one night.
We booked our trip last minute and so accommodation was a challenge but this gem was definitely the best place we stayed. The owner is incredibly helpful, friendly and kind. The view over the mountains and sea is just sublime, and rounding it off that you're staying in a rustic Japanese log cabin - its the full package in my opinion.

This was a fantastic place to stay after finishing hiking the Kumano Kodo. Ura-san picked us up from the end of the hike, took us shopping for groceries and dropped us to the station the next morning - this all worked really well for us and he is such a generous person. The log cabin was gorgeous with everything we needed to cook and relax. The views from the balcony are gorgeous and we enjoyed having a wine in front of the wood heater when the temperature dropped at night. It was so quiet and peaceful and we had the best night’s sleep. The home made blueberry jam and home grown rice were a nice touch. A nice change from hotels and one of our favourite places in 3 weeks in Japan.

New ZealandA unique experience in Japan - so glad I booked this to take our young adult sons to. Good instructions from the host on how to reach it via rental car. This is a lovely rural cosy cottage with beautiful views. Ura-san greeted us personally, showed us around, told us how to put our futons out and even put some of his home-grown rice in the cooker for us. Lots of sauces etc for us to use when we made our meal and homemade blueberry jam and some frozen blueberries we could enjoy too. It was lovely to speak to Ura-san and he saw us off in the morning too. What a lovely man and a lovely place to stay.

United StatesOur stay was a wonderful and unique experience among our travels in Japan. It was easy to reach via rental car (with route recommendations by the host) and the perfect place to stay after visiting Seiganto-ji (less than 20 minute drive). It was a true rural cottage experience with beautiful views in a cozy cabin. Communication with the host couldn't have been better. He provided very helpful information prior to our stay and although he was unable to meet us in person, the friend/neighbor that he arranged to settle us in was awaiting us upon arrival and incredibly kind and helpful. ...and he makes the most amazing blueberry jam (which was left as a welcome gift for us)! Fabulous patio to eat/drink/relax/watch the sunset, spacious bedroom, stocked kitchen, cozy living area, great Japanese tub, unbeatable views... A real gem and an experience not to be missed if you're in the area!

AustraliaGoogle maps kept trying to make us take route 235 to the house which is a single lane, dangerous road in need of repair. We had to turn back as it got too hairy. Make sure you take route 43- properly sealed road with vehicle turnouts and shoulder barriers. Wi-fi is the free Wakayama prefecture option and can be a bit patchy at times.
Friendly and gracious host. Cozy and homey wood cabin. Kids loved it. Played basketball, used the swing, hammock and picked blueberries. Quiet mountain forest surroundings which was a reprieve from the busy japanese cities.
