How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewStunning location, great rooms, restaurant was exceptional. Staff very accommodating with a great relaxed atmosphere. We would highly recommend half board.
Booked through booking . com, half board should advertise drinks included as we nearly didn't book it as it seemed expensive for food alone. However it was well worth it. All of the rooms have been refurbished beautifully, personally I would remove all of the warning stickers from sinks and clothes hangars etc.

Verified reviewThe place was very comfortable and peaceful even though it’s only 30 minutes from the city. Immediately felt zen when we arrived at Moksa.
Wished the facilities like the sauna was included in the stay.

Verified reviewWe had a phenomenal stay at Moksa. We used the place as a retreat from the hustle of Kyoto and hoards of tourists and it was perfect. We decided to indulge with the half board option and the food was phenomenal, particularly dinner. Very high quality ingredients executed by skilled chefs, well worth the price we paid (albeit early bird rate). Breakfast was great but stick with the Japanese, it's head and shoulders above the other options (when in Rome...) The room facilities were top, and the private garden with its pond, fish and turtle were a real delight. Included drinks were a welcome addition. We enjoyed the location in the mountains, adventuring up the cable car and ropeway were a highlight of Kyoto!
We had an exceptional stay. The only piece of feedback id suggest is the price of the sauna/onsen. Given this is included in comparable properties we stayed at, the very steep extra charge wasn't palatable for us. Having it included (even for extra $ in package) would really round out the 'retreat' feel of the stay. Maybe you can include for guest who are already purchasing board package (or create another?). It looked beautiful and shame for it to go un-used.

Verified reviewTranquil environment. You feel calm and relax upon entering the hotel. Beautiful garden. Friendly reception. Room is modern and bed is comfortable. Nice trails near the hotel for you to explore. Dinner is excellent with chef preparing dishes in front of you.
It was a narrow road leading to hotel. Need to drive through a flight of steps.

Verified reviewThe hotel has a very nice and serene forest-setting, and is beautifully decorated in soft and earthy shades. We very much enjoyed the wonderful view of the beautiful garden and koi pond while enjoying our breakfast in the restaurant. The hotel also offers free parking and it is only a 5 minute walk to the nearest train station. We enjoyed our room and the stylish bathroom with its amenities such as a skincare kit. The beds are big and comfortable, and our room had 2 televisions. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and immediately wanted to help out with our luggage when we arrived. You also get a typical japanese snack in a box on a daily basis.
The room does not get cleaned every day, and for a 5*-hotel we don't think this is acceptable. As Japan has almost no public bins, you often end up taking your trash back to the hotel, so at least emptying the trash as well as tidying the beds should have been included daily. Breakfast is limited with only 3 options to choose from: Japanese, American and Vegetarian set. I really enjoyed the Japanese breakfast as it was fresh and tasty, but it was the exact same set every morning. Would be better if they offered some more variety or at least switched some ingredients from day to day. For a hotel calling themselves 'Rebirth Hotel', it's too bad there is no free entry to the spa or sauna included. You can choose to book one of the 3 private saunas for 90 minutes, with prices from 12.000 yen up to 18.000 yen, which is quite pricey.

Verified reviewThe hotel is really gorgeous. I wish I had planned some time to just relax and enjoy it more. The location isn't super central but that is part of the hotel's charm. The breakfast was delicious and we ate at the restaurant twice as the food was so delicious. Gorgeous gardens and the service was impeccable. They also give inari sushi each day as a snack and there are complimentary drinks in the fridge in your room. We would love to stay again.
It would be nice if the breakfast changed a little each day. It's very delicious and you can have a western or Japanese option but we would have liked to have Japanese each day with variety of dishes. It would be nice if some fruit was included. It would be nice if there were teapots in the rooms and dining room as Kyoto is an important tea region.

Verified reviewTranquil Mountain Setting: Located at the foot of a mountain, the hotel offers a peaceful environment, ideal for relaxation away from the city's hustle and bustle. Charming Courtyard: The hotel features a small, beautiful courtyard where guests can enjoy breakfast, providing a serene start to the day. Thoughtful Welcome: Upon check-in, guests receive a small box of snacks, adding a personal touch to the arrival experience.
Limited Housekeeping: Cleaning services are provided every two to three days, which may not meet the expectations of all guests. Inconvenient Location: Situated far from many tourist attractions, reaching the city center requires a small train ride, which may be inconvenient for some travelers. Lack of Nearby Amenities: There are no convenience stores or restaurants in the immediate vicinity, limiting dining options outside the hotel. Expensive Dining Options: The hotel's lunch and dinner offerings are quite pricey, potentially affecting the overall value. Paid Spa Services: Spa services are available but come at an additional cost, which may not be ideal for all guests. Limited Guest Activities: The hotel does not organize additional activities for guests, focusing primarily on accommodation and dining services.

Verified reviewSecluded location, architecture, quality, cleanliness, great bar, amazing rooms and sauna. Asumi was a gem, treated us incredibly well and we had great conversations at the bar.
Service is hit or miss. Some staff dont speak English or very little and seem a bit rude (language barrier) but they are trying their best.

Verified reviewExceptionally good hotel. Relaxed, comfortable. Great location for a trip up the cable car for the views and temples. Easy to Kyoto centre by train with a short cut from the hotel to the station. Evening meal option was great. Free drinks too.
Not much to dislike. Top end of our budget but worth it.
