How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewHostel is located at a short walk from Gekkouji station, there is a grocery store and Daiso nearby, vending machine also right outside the hostel. Staff was extremely nice and welcoming, also very knowledgeable about Mt. Fuji if you plan on climbing it, they helped us with the different busses we had to take and have multiple timetables available. They have 2 dorm rooms that fit 10 people and 2 private rooms. During our stay the dorms had about 5 people at most. There is a communal fridge/toaster oven/ microwave/ water cooker available to use. Be sure to label your food when you put it in the fridge. There are also lockers that you can rent that fit a large backpack and then some! Facilities were all very clean and well maintained, they also offer a laundry service for ¥500 (washing and drying). Everything is also really well labeled and had an explanation in multiple languages!

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us. We understand that adjusting to dormitory living can sometimes be challenging, especially when it comes to amenities like lighting. Please be advised that the light switch is located inside the room for everyone's convenience. Since you stayed in a dormitory room, we are unable to turn off the lights, as other guests may prefer them on. However, we encourage all guests to feel free to turn off the lights if everyone appears to be sleeping. Your insights are valuable to us, and we continuously strive to enhance our guests' experiences. Thank you again for staying at Michael`s

Verified reviewIt is at a good location to get around
The hostel is owned by a person wants to control everything and obviously knows everything about everything. The hostel is full with notes and signs about what and how to do things, this is even worse that any other hostels I have visited in the last 20 years in asia. There is absolutely no hospitality or friendliness just rules and guideleines. The staff has the same attitude as the owner. This place is the perfect example what modern tourism has become. Only exists because it relatively cheap, good location and there is no shortage of tourists so they can do whatever they want. To be there feels like the best you can do is not even come just leave the money at the door so they don’t have to deal with the hassle. Despite all the positive feedback someone had to write the truth.
Thank you for your feedback. Let us answer your comments, one by one. First, you`ve been travelling in Asia for 20 years, that`s a good thing, but maybe we are the first Hostel you`ve stayed at that doesn't bend down for travellers who don't follow the rules. Rules are there for a reason. to have standards within the property, and safety for the guests. Every property is different, every property has set of rules in each room you stay at. Maybe you read it, or you don't. The difference in our property is that you can read it right in front of you. No Hospitality or Friendliness, have you considered that some staff here are not native English speakers and probably do not understand you? Modern tourism? We`ve been here for than 15 years and helped the town put up English signs for travelers to understand and helped local businesses attract tourists. Just for your knowledge, tourists boomed just post-COVID; before that, we had very few tourists who visited this town. Our business is here when there are not a lot of tourist visits to this town. And your last statement, "To be there feels like the best you can do is not even come, just leave the money at the door so they don’t have to deal with the hassle." We`re sorry if you feel that way, but maybe next time consider using a Hotel and not a small hostel, so you will feel that your money is worth it. And lastly, all the information we posted on our property is in the property description before you even book us, and did you read that? And from over 959 reviews in the past years, you`re the only one saying the truth, and 958 of them are lying. Just a piece of advice, before booking a property, read their policies, and if you don't like them, don't stay there. Thank you again for staying at Michael`s!

Verified reviewGood location, helpful staff, clean bathroom.
The hostel is not soundproof at all. There are multiple private rooms but we unluckily got the one between the dorms and the bathrooms and we heard every footstep and discussion in the lobby or the room next to us. Furthermore, quiet time only after 12pm is just too late, especially when it is a town where waking up early for hikes etc is needed. It seems that the dorms are the better option. Moreover, you get a lot of messages before arriving, a bit too excessive.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're glad to hear that you appreciated our good location, helpful staff, and clean bathrooms. Your feedback is invaluable as we strive to provide the best possible stay for all our guests. We sincerely apologize for the noise disturbances you experienced during your stay. We understand how important a quiet environment is, especially when you're preparing for early hikes. However, this information is stated in our Hostel description. Regarding the pre-arrival communication, we aim to ensure that our guests are well-informed and prepared for their stay. All of the emails sent to the guests include **THIS IS AN AUTO-GENERATED EMAIL** **IF YOU ALREADY RESPONDED TO OUR PREVIOUS EMAILS OR HAVE ALREADY NOTIFIED US OF YOUR ARRIVAL TIME, NO NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS ONE*. Maybe next time, consider staying in a Hostel, which will give you a better accommodation. Thank you again for staying at Michael`s.

The room is too clouded. The two level bunk bed make squeak sounds that disturbing my sleeps.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the room felt too crowded and that the squeaking sounds from the two-level bunk bed disturbed your sleep. Just for clarification, we do offer private rooms for guests who are a bit picky when it comes to shared rooms. Our Dormitory rooms are described as it is on this platform, with photos included. As you witnessed every day, we clean all beds/rooms after every check-out. Any clutter made by staying guests is not to be blamed on our property. We cannot just teach everyone how to act.

Verified reviewClean, and right in the middle of the town. Good spot when visiting Fuji area.
Too many beds in one room, hard to get to yours. Quite price for what it is.
Thank you for your stay with us. Although you say the price is high, we are the cheapest hostel in Fujiyoshida.

Verified reviewGreat location with a great view, very clean, and extremely friendly staff. The beds were comfortable, and the hostel was perfect for a short stay due to its location and reasonable price.
Incredibly moody, unfriendly owner. He was rude and condescending to both his staff and guests (not to their faces, of course). A little tip: if you don't want people staying in the hostel ten minutes before checkout, then change the checkout to 10. But I don't want to be annoyed that there are still a few people here. This review primarily goes to the staff, so to all guests: if you see the owner, just put on some earplugs, then you'll have peace and quiet. And be especially nice to the staff; the owner isn't. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you consider that, as a non-Japanese, he's just a guest at the end of the day as well.
Thank you for your stay with us. Today, I was asking my staff about the locker keys and if they knew whether the guest had left or not. I was not talking about you when you told me you still had 5 minutes before checkout, standing next to your locker. I told you that I was talking to my staff, not to you. The guest I was asking about checked out 4 hours after checkout time at 15:00, not 11:00, so not all guests follow the polices of the hostel. By the way, yes, I'm a guest here in Japan for 30 years.
