How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe overall stay exceeded my expectations. Staff and hotel facilities were great. The room was spacious and very clean. The breakfast was very good. Views from the room were stunning.
The walk to the hotel is a little long and steep from the town

Verified reviewReally clean, great views, solid location, very pleasant staff. All around a great stay. Very helpful with bike rental.
Only downside was no staff being available to operate the sunset terrace. But you can still order plenty of different types of booze from front desk and walk upstairs with it.

Verified reviewExcellent views for Naoshima island, close to the port, with comfortable rooms. We enjoyed the dinner which was value for money and the e-bike rental was really convenient. Helpful staff
It is up on a hill and then many steps are involved so may not be ideal for people with movement limitations. The building was not luxurious and it’s a 3 star establishment but the cost is 5 star hotel equivalent so not great value for money

Verified reviewWe stayed in ‘Oak’ the 2 storey villa lower down from the hotel with a small balcony on each level with a tree growing through! Very quiet. Simply but tastefully designed and furnished. The bedroom was comfortable with good bedding. Downstairs had table and chairs and small kitchen area with a fridge, microwave and plates and crockery - it was nice to be able to buy provisions and do our own breakfast. There was a sauna in the bathroom but we didn’t use it - looked fab though, just not in August! Enjoyed the hotel sun terrace - for drinks while watching sunset (bar was closed so we took our own) Delivery drop off and bike hire from the Naoshima tours as recommended by hotel all worked really well. Loved having e bikes rather than walking up the slope each day and being able to pop out for food in the evening / 7-11 supplies
Minor points - but the stay was expensive so would have liked more amenities, shower cap / cotton buds etc. also a yukata would have been a nice touch More hooks needed for towels in bathroom Drying cloth for dishes (need to use bathroom sink for washing up so no where to leave to drip) Then although not a fault of the hotel - but as the villa is lower down, the the view is less impressive and the foliage around the villa meant lots of mosquitos so it wasn’t enjoyable to sit on the balcony. Maybe it’s different out of summer though .

Verified reviewI loved the design and the timber. Each room has a balcony.
It is a tough walk up the hill with your luggage. No taxis available from the port. It is only 500 metres but up very steep hill and it is super hot on August. They should organise a guest pick up at least for luggage as a minimum. It would not be too difficult.

Verified reviewGood view and nice service.
There is a slope so it is not easy to park there. Also, there was some noise from other rooms. I think the price is high.

Verified reviewThe view. The location.
The service. The staff and the time limit (for restaurant, breakfast…) very strict make you feel uncomfortable. I had to pay 4000 yen for a futon to my 4 years old kid. Otherwise I would have to sleep in my single bed (!). And for 4000 yen didn’t have a sheet to cover him the first night. Had to ask for it.

Verified reviewWe really liked the location and the features that were offered here (f.e. Food delivery, Sunset terrace, bike rental and baggage Service). These were not included in the price.
The room was very small for the price we paid. But we know that the room was less expensive than all the other hotels on the island.

Verified reviewThe peak cottage room was SO NICE. Great to be a bit further from the rest of the hotel, felt nice and private and secluded with an insane view and a private infrared sauna. Fantastic location - the view from the peak cottage and sunset lounge were beautiful, and a short walk to the port area for dinners/drinks. Staff were really friendly and helpful, and the whole place has a really nice design. The uphill walk to the property (especially to the peak cottage) might be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues though.
They really need to get a wifi extender for the peak cottage. The signal was very weak up there, and would intermittently just drop out entirely. Also the shower wasn’t the best.

Verified reviewThe facilities at MY LODGE Naoshima were clean, spacious, and comfortable, with a nice view that made the stay pleasant. The breakfast was simple but good for the price, overall the property felt well-kept.
The location is on top of a hill, so it takes around 10 minutes walking uphill to get there. They do mention this and offer a service to pick up your luggage from the port, which we booked, but when we arrived, no one was there to meet us. Transportation on the island is very limited, with only two taxis available, so it’s quite difficult to get around unless you walk or rent a bicycle. The staff was not friendly or helpful, and they did not take responsibility for any issues. Another big downside is the limited dining options on the island, which the hotel does not warn you about. If you want to have dinner, the only option is at the hotel, and you need to reserve it at least a day in advance. We didn’t know this, so when we asked about dinner options, we were told the only place open was their rooftop grill. Calling it a grill is misleading, as it was just reheated chicken and octopus in the microwave, with tiny portions that were chewy and barely edible. We paid 100 USD for a meal that was cold and disappointing, and when we complained, no one took responsibility.
