How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis place was unlike anywhere I have stayed before. It is actually a heritage street in Kyoto that has been turned into a hotel. Each double is beautifully fitted out in a traditional Japanese design. Each room has its own outdoor bath. We paid for a Wagyu degustation for dinner and also for breakfast and both these meals were unique and very memorable - not to mention delicious! All the staff here are wonderful roo!
It was all amazing

The bathroom sink drain kept getting stuck but that was it. Wish the sitting area had more comfortable settings.

Verified reviewWe really enjoyed our stay at Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki st. The accommodation was beautiful and really comfortable, we loved the stocked fridge and the reed diffuser which is free for you to take home (its smells wonderful and we can’t wait to open it!). The staff were friendly and very attentive and explained everything to us on arrival. The breakfast was also lovely and very filling. This is the first hotel we’ve stayed in in Japan where our 9 year old was given a separate bed which was a welcomed relief (it isn’t a standard in western countries and something we have never experienced in other countries)
We were offered a complimentary gift (late check out, plum wine or another option). We asked for the plum wine but it wasn’t given to us. We didn’t ask on check out as we’d only got a rucksack as our luggage was in Osaka and it would have been awkward to carry for the remainder of our time in Kyoto
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review of your recent stay at Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St. We are truly delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed your time with us — from the comfort of the room and amenities such as the stocked fridge and reed diffuser, to the attentiveness of our staff and the quality of our breakfast. It brings us great joy to know that your 9-year-old was able to enjoy a separate bed and rest well during your stay. We understand how important comfort is for every family member, and we are glad we could provide that for you. We would also like to sincerely apologize for the oversight regarding the complimentary plum wine. While we understand that you didn’t follow up at check-out due to your travel situation, we regret the inconvenience this may have caused. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will take steps to ensure this does not happen again in the future. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to Kyoto. Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly should you return — we would love the opportunity to make your next stay even more special. Warmest regards, Nauzna Kyoto Tsubaki St MIKU MOCHIZUKI

Verified reviewStunning redesign of a machiya. Innovative menu ( have the Oita Wagyu set) and the sweetest staff in Kyoto. Turn up the heat in the outdoor bath and let your muscles and mind relax.
While the design is creative and innovative, the use of multiple levels and steps in the unit, is challenging for anyone with balance or mobility issues. The staff were very receptive to this feedback.
Thank you very much for your kind and thoughtful review of your stay at Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the unique design of our renovated machiya, the Oita Wagyu set menu, and especially the hospitality of our staff. Your mention of the outdoor bath and the relaxation it brought you is truly appreciated. At the same time, we are grateful for your honest feedback regarding the multi-level layout of the guest unit. We understand that this design, while reflecting the traditional character of Kyoto townhouses, may pose challenges for guests with mobility or balance concerns. Please rest assured that your comments have been carefully noted and shared with our team as we continue to improve the accessibility and comfort of our spaces. Nothing! From the rooms to the staff to the location, everything was perfect!
Thank you very much for taking time to share your feedback on your stay at our hotel, Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St. We are so pleasure that you have enjoyed our semi-open-air bath. Verified reviewThe room was beautiful. Massage services were great. The welcome gift was great.
Didn’t know it was two floors. The lighting was really bad. Pot lights made certain areas really bright (blinding you) and then it’s super dark. The beds were not a queen size but rather two twins. The onsen was really dark. Cleansiness wasn’t at par. Found spider webs everywhere! Wasn’t much variety with breakfast unfortunately.

Verified reviewWe loved the room! It was definitely a treat to have a bigger space in a room for a little while after several small hotel rooms. The room was beautiful and comfortable, and the traditional exterior was a dream. Of course one of the main reasons we booked this was to have a private onsen which was much needed after days of walking. It was really nice to be able to choose your preferred temperature. Additionally, we absolutely loved the dinner you can book at Bungo restaurant - highly recommend this! My partner had the full wagyu menu and I had the other meat menu which included sushi. My partner is a meat lover and I don’t eat meat as much but we were blown away by the menu, the combinations of the dishes and taste - we reminisced the menu the whole day today! We were also pleased that the chef still adapted the dishes to your preference; I like my meat a bit more cooked and this was no issue at all. The staff was super friendly and welcoming!
Thank you very much for your kind and thoughtful review. We are truly delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that the spacious room provided a touch of luxury after experiencing smaller hotel rooms. It is wonderful to know that you appreciated the traditional design and the comfort of the room, as well as the semi-open air bath—being able to soak and relax at your preferred temperature is indeed a special experience, and we’re glad you enjoyed it. We’re also very happy that your dinner at our restaurant "Bungo" exceeded expectations. It’s great to hear that both you and your partner found the menus memorable and satisfying. Our chef takes pride in tailoring each dish to suit our guests’ preferences, and we’re glad the adjustments made for you were to your liking. Lastly, thank you for your kind words about our staff. We strive to provide warm and attentive service, and it means a lot to hear that it made your stay more enjoyable. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back again in the future!

Verified reviewThe facilities and hospitality are excellent. The Ochazuke breakfast was delightful and the restaurant itself is beautifully fitted out. We were in a private dining space since we were 5 people and it was absolutely divine looking. The staff were extremely helpful but wonderfully discreet in appearing only as required. The food was exquisite and almost too beautiful looking to eat. It was a visual delight for the senses. The bedrooms are well fitted out and very comfortable. The pyjamas are soft and beautiful and having one's own hot tub was luxurious and relaxing. The lounge is excellent with free flowing wine and sake for a few hours each evening. The staff are extremely polite and helpful. We enjoyed the tea blending session in the lounge in the evening. We didn't have time to book in for a kimono tying class but we would love to do it when we return next time. Thank you for a wonderful stay, Nazuna Tsubaki Street. we will definitely be back for a longer stay.
The lack of space to open out suitcases in the rooms, especially if 3 people are in one accommodation. It would have been nice to have some more savoury snacks in the lounge for those of us who don't like sugar. It is a small lounge so it can get overcrowded in the evening. Clearing up used glasses and plates more frequently would have been good too.
We are very pleased to read that you were satisfied with the food, facilities, and staff. Our staff would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the ochazuke breakfast, bread and tea service, and for showing us how much you enjoyed your experience during your stay with us. On the other hand, we sincerely appreciate your comments regarding the lounge space and used dishes. We will consider making improvements in the future to make your stay more comfortable. We look forward to welcoming you again.
