Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

New ZealandEverything was amazing! Lovely house and the owner was the sweetest person ever. I thought the place was a bit far away from the main area of Nikko but we loved a good hike through the forest and finish at the temples and shrines. And the owner offered us a ride to the station when we were leaving. Awesome place.

New ZealandThe rooms was a little dark and we had to be out of the room during the day which was fine as we were busy however on a bad weather day that can be a little tough.
The breakfast was excellent and the hosts were so welcoming, we had a car and could park onsite which was great. There was a very good place to eat within walking distance for dinners.

United StatesMost rooms are as spacious as the pictures show. Unfortunately, our room barely fit 3 beds and felt very cramped in the end. I believe this is the result of adjusting a 2-bed room into a 3-bed room. I am thankful accommodations were made to allow us to stay, but it was definitely shocking to open the door to our room to such a cramped space.
The owner is fantastic and gave us rides to and from the station (~7min ride). He was kind and explained things thoroughly on check in so there were no surprises. He asks us to be out of the rooms 10a-4p to clean. He was very respectful of our belongings. There is a men's toilet and women's toilet upstairs, and a bath/shower/sink downstairs for everyone. The pension/boarding-style house is well known to the community as "L'escale" and has a good reputation in Nikko.

United StatesNo complaints whatsoever.
Kas was AMAZING! Wonderful hospitality! Went the extra mile to make sure we were well taken care of! I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Nikko. Bathrooms were huge and had large tubs for bathing. Kas and his wife speak very good English so it made communicating easy.

United KingdomThis is an exceptional place to stay in Nikko. The room was basic but had everything I needed and was very comfortable. The owner and his wife are amazing. They were so kind to me during my stay giving me advice, taking me to the station and even giving me some warming pads as it was unusually cold while I was there. The breakfasts and dinners are delicious and highly recommended.

JapanThe hotel is close to Tobu Nikko and JR Nikko station. It is a Japanese style hotel and the owners of the hotel are incredibly warm and lovely people who ensured we had a comfortable stay. I and my family are vegetarians. They accommodated our food preferences and prepared a FANTASTIC meal.

ItalyThe owners, Fujita San and his wife, are wonderful host and people. You feel at home from the first moment you enter the door and don't want to leave. I booked originally 2 nights only but I took a 3rd spontaneously because I felt really welcomed. They brought me with them to a lantern festival 1 hour from Nikko and offered me the experience. Two people who do their job with passion and each customer is important. I loved the concept of the small pension because you are part of the business, not just a number. The accomodation is maybe a bit out of date but very clean, that's what matters to me. You can reach by bus from Tobu Nikko station (line 2D) but there are not so much trips, however for me that I don't mind walking, I have done also on foot, about 30 mins

United KingdomLeaving Nikko. 3 days was not enough.
We loved our stay in Nikko. Nikko is the best place in all of Japan and pension L'escale is the best place to stay at. The owners were lovely and very kind. They gave us a lift to the station with our bags and even little good luck souvenirs for our journey. You can tell the place is looked after and the owners are passionate about their business and exploring Nikko. We also borrowed snow shows for our January walk to the marshlands. Hopefully I will get to stay here again!

United StatesThe staff were very friendly and accommodating. The owner/chef made excellent dishes and pastries (and I am a professional chef, so take that into consideration in this assessment). I’ve been to Michelin star restaurants that weren’t as good.

Kazumichi Fujita San and his family are great hosts. They are very friendly and helpful. Fujita San gave us some hot packs for our sightseeing because the weather had turned cold that day. Night before our checkout, Fujita San also offered to drive us to the station. But we didn't want to trouble them, because knowing they were busy with managing their business. On check out day, we walked to the station. Fujita was on his way back to the hotel. He spotted us on the roadside and insisted on sending us to the station. He told us that his sister texted him that we had just left the hotel. We were surprised that they even packed japanese souvenir snacks for our checkout. We felt so blessed to stay in this hotel with such hospitality. It would be wonderful if we could communicate in japanese to express our gratitude and thankfulness for such such a great stay.
