Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

GermanyRoom with toilet is a bit small.
Great and friendly staff who'll help you with anything you need. Breakfast and the packed lunch were very tasty. Location works well if you want to do the Kumano Kodo in 2 days. Definitely recommended!

United StatesThe toilets were a little bit awkward, but otherwise it was amazing!
The building itself was a treat, as was its perfect location after a long day of hiking. But most importantly, the staff was incredible!!!! Hitomi was an incredible host and made me feel welcome and taken care of. Giovanni was a wonderful chef and host too ☺️

GermanyWe ordered the Dinner, it was delicous! (The owner has goats, so parts of the meal came with cheese from these goats. Also the two who worked there were friendly and helpful, if we would come back one day, we would choose this guesthouse again! Behind the house is a beergarden and you can find the oldest cherry-tree of the prefektur in the Garden.

SwedenEverything was fantastic: the amazing staff we met, who took care of us the best way possible (thank you so much), delicious homemade food we ate (catering for our special requirements as well) , and beautiful home and room. Perfect stay - I would have stayed there for a week !

AustraliaThe NONAGASE was an amazing and convenient location for the Kumano to stay in. The bus stop is literally out the front !! It was trendy, clean and there’s a bar out the back for those thirsty after a long day on the track. I want to personally thank Hitomi for collecting me from a roadside location in 35 degree heat on the first day of the trek which was unbelievable service. Thanks Hitomi - you are the best 😜🙏

United KingdomOur host Hitomi (and her team) go above and beyond to define what good hospitality means. She was kind, considerate, and caring, and she is a superb cook. We had an absolutely fantastic stay after a long hike, and came out rejuvenated. The place itself is also magnificent: a knockout traditional property.

AustraliaHitomi was so wonderful. She greeted us warmly and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend ordering dinner. The dinner she cooked for us was made from local ingredients and we could feel and taste how much time and care she puts into her dishes. Hitomi is a very experienced Kumano Kodo hiker, and she even took the time to write us a personalised itinerary based on our needs. She also took some amazing photos of us in our yukatas with the beautiful house and scenery. So glad to have these nice photos to remember our stay :)

Absolutely beautiful house in a picturesque valley. Views from the room are phenomenal. The house itself is a work of art. 300 year old Sakura tree right outside. Staff are wonderful and friendly. You feel right at home as the atmosphere is like staying at friends. Incredibly comfortable room.

United StatesLiterally nothing.
Not only the best place I stayed in Japan, one of the best places I have EVER stayed. A gorgeous historic house, only two rooms, a very very special space. We fell asleep listening to the crickets in the garden. The food was SPECTACULAR, completely unexpected and superb. Only come here if you’re going to be a wonderful human because the staff are the most welcoming, warm, and helpful individuals and deserve the bests guests! And then say hi to Hitomi for us!

SingaporeNothing much.
Very personalised service. Excellent location with the bus stop a stone throw a way (for both directions). The kumano kodo route goes past this property. Nice setting both outside and inside the property. Welcome drink includes sake! Breakfast was well balanced and included fruits, veg, protein, carbs, good quality Italian coffee. The optional dinner at extra cost felt like elevated private dining. Host also helped to wash our laundry and folded them nicely after they'd gone through the dryer, much appreciated after a long hike.

United StatesThough this was well noted in the description, the western style mattress was pretty small for two people (full size bed). We might have preferred the tatami room instead for more space. Shared bathrooms but we didn’t mind that.
The staff here makes the stay perfect! They welcomed us warmly and helped with whatever we needed - from lunch boxes for our hike to doing our laundry! Don’t pass on dinners - it’s amazing and so much food after a long hike. The location on the trail is perfect - right on the Kumano, and made for our long day from Chikatsuyu to Hongu a lot easier.

We loved our stay here! Our hosts were so friendly and welcoming. I have coeliac disease, and they went out of their way to make us a vegetarian and gluten-free breakfast which was absolutely delicious. We also enjoyed a welcome drink in the garden. The room was beautiful and comfortable, and shared bathroom facilities were nice and clean. Would recommend to anyone walking the Kumano Kodo and passing through Chikatsuyu.

GermanyThe breakfast was great but I would have liked something more traditional japanse.
The outdoor garden is really beautiful and I loved that the accommodation is in traditional japanese style. The living room and dining area look magnificient. This was IMO the hotel which gave me the best experience overall of our whole trip to japan. The staff is really really friendly and very helpful. I forgot an earring in the room and they found it and sent it to me via post! Thanks a lot again to the whole stuff we had an awesome stay!

GermanyThe bed was a tad harder than what we’re used to, and also could be a little wider for two persons, but all in all it was a comfortable stay.
This place is a gem and a must stay if you hike on the Kumano Kodo! The Nonagase house belonged to the local Samurai clan and is being used as a guest house nowadays. So you get to stay in a place of historic charm. Nonetheless the guest house is quite comfortable and accommodating. The landlady aka manager Hitomi, alongside with her team, were splendid! To make the stay more easy for international guests, there are little notes left everywhere, which is truly endearing. In the back of the house there’s a beautiful beer garden which is open to passing hikers and guests alike. There you get the awesome-est bruschetta with home made goats cheese and all sorts of craft beer. Which brings me to the food: if you miss this, you will regret it! The owner of the guest house is Italian and the dinner was exquisite. Something you would never expect in the countryside of Wakayama. We would always come back to this place if we were to come to Chikatsuyu again.

Due to limited availability when I booked, Nonagase ended up being a bit fancier than my usual accommodation choices – but I certainly didn’t regret it! The building and rooms were absolutely stunning, and they even have a lovely little beer garden. The staff were perfect as well. I’d highly recommend staying here!
