How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewJordon the owner with his wife were Exceptional. Picked me up from Hongu and helped me start my Kohechi trail. As I speak English and Jordon fluent in English and Japanese it was an Easy stay and lovely to have things explained. The Tea tasting was supburb. This was the main reason I stayed there to learn about a small local Japanese tea producer. So very Good. Jordon helped me with a luggage transfer as well and drove me to a local onsen befor dinner. I really reccomend a stay with them. His wife is an exceptional cook and they producing eclectic dishes with local produce and tea.

Verified reviewThe location was stunning; absolutely beautiful and a real break from the cities we had been visiting (do ask to visit the tea farm!). The meals were exquisite; delicious, beautifully served and carefully considered. But it was the welcome we received which went so far beyond our expectations. We felt immediately at home. We had long conversations with our host which really allowed us to understand the area and their tea farm business. I cannot recommend the experience highly enough.

Verified reviewWe just loved our stay here! The area and views are so beautiful and peaceful. The location is a bit further from Hongu and we were without a car, but Jordan offered to drive us to a local onsen and a hiking spot. However, there are also buses running, just check the schedule beforehand. We were also so thankful to learn a lot about Japanese culture and traditions. The food was awesome, we had a tea-themed dinner that felt like fine-dining. They also produce tea (also amazing) and we bought some for home. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Verified reviewJust loved it! Loved waking up to the nice view outside through the window! Loved especially the dinners & breakfasts everyday of our stay! Felt like we were having Michelin meals :-). I would go back to stay just for that unique dining experience! We even bought some tea for souvenirs. The room was spacious for the 4 of us. We didn’t have a car but the hosts kindly picked us up & dropped us off at Hongu Station everyday of our stay. Would highly recommend! Thanks to Jordan & Natsumi for the lovely stay!

Verified reviewThe home-cooked meals we had here were spectacular, especially the ten-course dinner which we will remember as our most wonderful evening in Japan. The hosts are incredibly welcoming and it was a privilege to taste the tea they grow on their farm in beautiful surroundings. The two rooms was very comfortable, quiet, and cosy, especially the Japanese style bedroom which has a great view of the valley.

Verified reviewThis was our best Japnese experience. The hosts, Jordan and Natzumi did everything to make us welcome and comfortable. The food was the highlight of our stay, don't miss the dinner. Hongu is at the middle of the Kumano trail, we came with a car so we could visit different parts of the trail.

Verified reviewMake sure to have the tea dinner! Can be organised separate from the booking. Was one of the best dinners we’ve had in 5 weeks in Japan. The hosts are great and went out of their way to make sure we got the most out of our stay.
Location is a bit out of the way from the Kumano Kodo, but host offered to drive us to a few places and the dinner and everything else totally made up for the location. The actual place, views and village are also really nice.

Verified reviewSo far from busy Japan! Lovely place in the countryside. The room was very large with the private restroom.
Very far from any restaurants or convenience store. The shower is not in the room and is shared. Anyway a good balance between quality and cost. The host is very kind - but he is a westerner, while you probably would prefer to meet japanese hosts after you travel such a long distance...

Verified reviewWe had a wonderful stay at this accommodation. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, regional cuisine with local products, prepared and arranged with great care. Jordan was a very helpful and accommodating host and picked us up at the bus station when we arrived. We were also lucky enough to spontaneously book a visit of the hosts' tea farm - an interesting and unique experience for us.

Verified reviewWe had such a great stay with Natsumi and Jordan! They were both very wonderful hosts. If you're unsure of whether or not to do dinner there, do it! The food is sourced locally and Natsumi is an incredible chef. We felt lucky we could purchase some of Natsumi's tea to take home with us! Jordan picked us up in town, dropped us off at an onsen and then picked us back up and took us to the guesthouse. Serene location, clean room, very comfortable futons!

Verified reviewThis place is amazing. It is a little off the beaten path, but totally worth it! Everything is wonderful here, but especially the food! Most of the food is locally grown, or acquired, with a good portion of it coming from their own gardens. I highly recommend adding meals to your stay. The hosts are wonderful, they will help you get settled, and provide shuttle service if needed. The rooms are large, comfortable, and well equipped. I only stayed for one night, but I would happily return. This is one of the best places that I have stayed in Japan and was a highlight of my hike along the Kumano Kodo.

Verified reviewSimple but had all the basic amenities. Kept clean and organized. We did not use the bunk bed. The Tatami mats allowed to just put the mattress on the floor and sleep on them. We slept facing the windows and the view towards the mountain was really great. Jordan and Natsumi were very welcoming and friendly. Jordan provided us with interesting information about their tea plantations. The food was centered around vegetables from their own garden and tea plantations. Which was a very unique experience.
