How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified review- There was a storm when we stayed here, but the onsen bath looking out to the sea was very cosy and memorable under the rain. I enjoyed this more than a much more expensive ryokan we stayed at in Kinosaki. - The room was very spacious and clean, great bed
We arrived for the breakfast just a few minutes after it opened, so it's safe to assume that the few people who were already in the restaurant had arrived just before us and were the only other guests, which were max 6 other people in total. There was different (very) small dishes, among them fried rice, which my partner took the last portion of. I waited for a while because I thought they would come out with more, but nobody did. Then I asked the female staff, which looks South Asian and I'm gonna assume is Indian due to her accent, if I could get some, and she points to the gohan (white rice). I explain again that I'd like to have the fried rice, and she reacts like she never heard of it and basically tells me there is no such thing, so I tell her that my boyfriend just got one. She then goes ask the kitchen staff, and when she comes back, for some reason, it seems like she's struggling to find the words in English, and I assume she is going to say that they ran out of it. So I try to help her and say "so, there is no more fried rice?" to which she replies "oh yeah, only white rice, is that ok?", and what am I supposed to say, of course I shrug and say "well, ok". Then she immediately shouts to the cook in the kitchen, in front of me, "it's ok, you don't need to make more!". Like, seriously? I'm not sure if she's just completely clueless, shameless or she thought I wouldn't understand what she just said? I was already disappointed that the breakfast was not served at the table but it was a sad buffet, with ridiculously tiny dishes, and still they were so cheap that they couldn't cook enough food for every guest. How come it runs out before every guest is served? The size of the sashimi served was like a joke (see photos). The dishes were a mix of Japanese and Western foods, but there was not even basic stuff like butter or cheese for the bread.

Wife and I got bitten by bed bugs Had the dinner, the pacing was very rushed, quality was ok. 1 small slice of beef on a massive plate was amusing. Breakfast quality and choice was poor The shower does not drain properly for the outside onsen

Verified reviewOur room was huge, with a nice big comfy bed and a lovely balcony with beautiful views of the ocean. We had a little onsen spa on our balcony, which I loved relaxing in. The hotel also had options to rent e-bikes, which was really fun. There was so much nature around the area, and easy access to hiking trails from the hotel, with a free shuttle to Shimoda station at certain times. The Izu Peninsula area in general is stunning and I loved exploring the beaches, scuba diving, etc. I also loved the little island right in front of the hotel, and the birds flying around it every day.
The hotel was not vegetarian friendly - they didn't offer any vegetarian meals on the menu, and there were few vegetarian options at breakfast. Plus I didn't realise that the hotel would be so far from other cafes and restaurants. We didn't have our own car or other means of transport, and we weren't able to walk anywhere for coffee or dinner - we had to go to Shimoda or beyond for that. So that made it quite inconvenient for meals - we ended up just eating rice and boiled eggs from 7-Eleven a few times! This is the main reason it didn't meet my expectations - I thought there would be at least one vegetarian option on the menu so that we could eat meals at the hotel in the evenings. The eBike was great but it was large and heavy and ran out of battery quite fast. They gave me a replacement, but when I tried to attach it it didn't work and then I was miles away from the hotel with a big heavy eBike that didn't work. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to communicate with the staff.

Verified reviewThe location is beautiful! We really enjoyed the onsen in the room, and the rooms were very clean.
The property and the decor is a little outdated, and though it is generally well maintained, it didn’t feel as fancy as it looks on the website. The shower on the terrace was faulty with only boiling hot water coming out of it, so we couldn’t use it. The staff were very nice but seemed very inexperienced, which led to a couple of issues, including being charged twice for the room (I am still waiting for a response from the hotel, several weeks later!)

Verified reviewThe view is breathtaking and don't forget to go out at night when most of lights are off and there is little light pollution, you can see the milky way!!!! Rooms are a great size and clean. The bed is very comfortable, the linens and the towels are excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful. Location is great for the views but a 10 minute drive into town or a 45 minute walk for anything else you may need as there are no mini marts, restaurants out on the peninsula.
We arrived 2 hours early and was told our room was clean and available but if we wanted to check in early it was 2000Y per hour. Never in all of my years of travel including the last 8 months in 50+ hotels and aiirbnbs have I EVER been asked to pay to check in early. Not a nice way to begin our stay. We only had the breakfast buffet one morning and it was nice, not great. We never had lunch or dinner at the hotel.

Verified reviewThe view was great, the room was spacious and clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It has a nice open air bath where you can relax after a long day of sightseeing.
The location is a bit remote, so there is no convenience store nearby, but there is a shuttle bus from the hotel to Shin-Shimoda station, so it’s easy to go there.

Verified reviewLocation, Location, Location. Unbeatable room views. Excellent supporting staff who couldn't have done more.
Not wishing to disrespect other comments, the standards / age of some areas of the hotel and so called lounge services need attention that has perhaps not been noted elsewhere by booking.com The so called massage chairs ? some looked awfully tatty and worthy of a rubbish dump. I have refrained from sending a photo as it would be too insulting. The staff were absolutely excellent but the Management seemed mostly ambivalent to facilities / service and could do with training in hotel hospitality management IMHO. The restaurant fixed menu pre ordered was disappointing and maybe we were spoilt after so many other excellent restaurant visits across Japan. The so called special beef was a joke but we had come from Kanazawa +North and Takayama so had been spoilt there on beef quality, portion size and cooking. The wine selection? non existent other than being proposed expensive off the menu offerings. The lounge bar for evening drinks service? Staff? Management?
