How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe team were fantastic - they couldn't do enough for us. they were very professional. The ryohan was very authentic and really enjoyed the public bath. One of the team gave us a lift into the city, which we really appreciated. I cannot rate this accommodation highly enough.
Nothing. Everything was fantastic.

Verified reviewThe breakfast offered a wonderful glimpse into Japanese culture, and we especially enjoyed relaxing in the cosy onsen. It was reassuring to see that the ryokan also attracted Japanese guests, not just tourists. At the same time, the staff seemed very accustomed to welcoming international visitors and were consistently friendly and courteous.

Verified reviewUnique, historic experience with phenomenal view and location. Amazingly attentive staff, and one of the best Japanese breakfasts we enjoyed!
Didn’t realize our room had to share bathrooms, although they have private bathroom options. I would have chosen private if I’d known.

Verified reviewSo glad we had this ryokan experience with the dinner and breakfast package. The location of Ohanabo is fantastic: walkable from the train station (although we took a taxi), and right across from a key and beautiful temple. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. At the end of our stay, they volunteered to give us a ride to the train station (above and beyond service), and even give a ride to our luggage later in the day to the next hotel we were going to be staying at in Kyoto. I've never received such service. While at the ryokan, we really enjoyed the experience of walking around in our yukata robes, and enjoying the small but well-stocked onsen. Much (all?) of the food they served us is prepared in-house, and it is delicious! I want to find out where I can get a pillow like the one we had at Ohanabo - never had anything quite like it and I loved it.
This is not something I did not like, but rather a "fair warning" to tall people: be careful, there are many places where you may hit your head. At 1.85m (6'1") myself, I only bumped my head twice.

Verified reviewQuaint, great location. Staff and family were over the top kind and went out of their way to make sure we felt at home at this beautiful little B&B in Kyoto. Mayu, her family, and especially her mom made it our favourite memory during our trip. We were well taken care of and were even driven to a shrine! This place is a MUST on your trip. Cannot say enough great things. We miss them and hope to make it back again! Thank you Ohanabo love from your Canadian Friends ❤️
Nothing wrong with this place!

Verified reviewThe hotel was a short walk to the train station which is what we wanted. We were able to walk to all of the other places that we were interested in. Breakfast was the best meal I had on my entire trip! Definitely get it! The staff was exceptional also. Rooms were comfortable. We had our own bathroom which was nice. Definitely recommend staying here!

Verified reviewThe staff was phenomenal! They went above and beyond in every interaction, making recommendations of where to go, offering umbrellas to borrow, and just being the sweetest, friendliest set of individuals we have met so far on our trip. The kaiseki meal and breakfast were both amazing, and they were very accommodating to my shellfish allergy. They also happily held our bags for several hours on both arrival and departure day while we experienced Kyoto. We cannot say enough about how wonderful this Ryokan is, and the location is phenomenal as well.

Verified reviewIt was one of the best experiences of our trip to Japan. I cannot recommend it enough, do yourself a favour and treat yourself to a night here! I have never met kinder and more helpful staff. I am coeliac and my friend is vegan and they prepared delicious and hearty breakfasts for both of us. The facility is wonderful. The futons are comfortable and the bath in the tub was very relaxing. We were provided with yukata for the night, socks, towels, shower essentials and welcome tea. The location is exceptional: opposite the Nishi Hongan-ji temple, a few minutes' walk from Kyoto station. Absolutely worth the price. Thank you so much for this experience, for your sweetness and welcome. ありがとうございました。 <3

Verified reviewWe stayed in a room with the private bathroom and it was really spacious. I recommended the breakfast, it’s really worthy!
I was expecting more attention to details both in the room itself and in the onsen. A bit overpriced for what we had.

Verified reviewThe place is exactly like the photos in the website. The staff are friendly and helpful. They always have ready smiles when they meet the visitors. Very cosy and warm ryokan! Location - has a bus stop nearby which visitors can take to the places of interest. Breakfast - sumptuous spread of food which were prepared with love and passion. Bath/Onsen - although it's small, but it contains everything which one expects in an onsen.
Nothing.
