How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe place was very clean and spacious. The onsen was relaxing and nice. There is a small cafe on the first floor, and they have amazing cheeseburgers. One of the best I've had in Japan. The place is also very close to the Snow Monkey Park so it is in a convenient location.
The walls / floors are thin so you can easily hear neighbors (sometimes their walking / movements too since a futon is used).

Verified reviewTraditional Japanese accommodation with their hot springs. We reserved with dinner and it was amazing, once again genuine Japanese experience and cuisine. The staff is amazing and while not fluent in English communication is not a problem at all, if ever back in that area will be booking with them again

Verified reviewThe location is beautiful, and our view was of the surrounding mountains and rushing river!
We needed a shower mat to catch the water after getting out of the shower. We also needed more towels as we made a couple trips to the baths, so or towels got wet and we needed replacements.

Verified reviewNo need to take a bath in the room since the onsen have all the amenities for it. The onsen is empty almost all day which is very nice to be on your own. No problem with having tattoos. The owners are amazing and explained everything in the room. Futtons are amazing and the room very clean. There is tea pot with hot water in the room. Fridge is full of stuff to buy. The owner took us to the monkey park and to the train station at the end free of charge. From the snow monkey you can take the bus down but easily you can do the road down by Shibu onsen easily for 40 min.
The hotel is old and the room initially smelled a bit old. At the check out the owner charge 150yen/night per person stating it was the onsen usage. I was not aware in the booking it was charging separately. Onsen is for sure above 50C because it real burned. I only got inside for 1/2 minutes and got red imediatos, it hurt. Later i was only able to dive inby adding a cold water from shower while inside.

Verified reviewA picturesque location overlooking mountains and river. The onsen was great. The dinner was incredible. The owner dropped us at the monkey park and also the train station the next morning, which was unexpected but so helpful to us.
The pillows are traditional and a bit lumpy for people used to feather or latex pillows.

Verified reviewI liked the onsen facilities, the outdoor onsen was so relaxing. The staff was incredible. They were so kind, they really cared about us, they tried very hard to speak English for us, they went out of their way to make sure that all our questions were answered and that we had everything we needed. I loved the location, it was so beautiful in that area and we really enjoyed our room overlooking the river. We left the windows open so we could get a breeze at night and listen to the water flowing down the river. The room was very comfortable for all of us! Also, we ordered food from the restaurant and it was really good!
The property was very old and needs to be updated. Everything looks very worn out and some things need repair. We also saw a cockroach on the lower level when we went down for breakfast.

Verified reviewMy huge river view room on the top floor was so spacious, squeeky clean and pleasant, I spent a lot of times sitting, reading, listening to the river trickle in the day time and roar at night. I'd keep the window open at night and it was such a pleasure and privilege to fall asleep to this wonderful sound. The futon bed was comfortable and there were more than ample supply of blankets. I found the traditional pillow very hard, but luckily I brought my own. Tea and a flask of cold/ hot water was supplied too. Staff was most helpful and the onsen facilities within the hotel was impressive with one indoor hot pool, one outdoors with the view to the misty mountains, constantly bubbling and spilling over with fresh mineral water. A sauna that operates 3-10pm was also available. But I was very lucky, I had the whole spa area to myself at all times. The daily breakfast on offer that I enjoyed at an added price was a smorgasbord of pickles, salad, slices of poached pork, mini shumei, rice, red bean soup, miso soup, sausage and bacon, cereal, drip coffee. The hotel also provides a free transport from and to the train station - take advantage of it! The hotel seemed quite close so I walked upon arrival which was a mistake, lugging luggage on uneven ground uphill! I arrived boiling hot, had not brought any light weight clothes and there were no shops that sold t shirts but the elderly lady kindly gave me a new t shirt to wear and keep! All in all, it was a very pleasant stay at the hotel run by an elderly and most helpful staff.
My only concern was that the spa areas were not cleaned on a daily basis as the stool I used which I moved from original position remained in the same place the next day.

Verified reviewLocated close to the station and surrounded by the mountains. They offered us a ride to the station. Very traditional Ryokan with clean bath facilities and excellent food. I wish we could have stayed more than one night! The monkey park is convenient to reach from here. They also have a restaurant with western style food if you booked without dinner. I would definitely recommend booking the dinner though, as it was a beautiful experience. Our room was traditional style and comfortable to sleep in and huge. Breakfast was also great. The outdoor onsen was amazing!
Hotel is slightly outdated, but that adds to the charm.

There were some parts of the room that wasn’t 100% clean but overall it was pretty clean.
