Chic traditional onsen within walking distance of the train station.

No fault of Onyado Tsutaya, but just a tip if you are over 6'2" your feet may hang off the end of the futon.

Communication beforehand was great. We liked that the walk from the train station to the hotel was short and convenient. We recommend staying in the main building in a Japanese style room which has a small but modern bathroom in the room. Upon arrival, we found the lobby to be chic and welcoming with tea, comfortable furnishings and a cute section of t-shirts and other souvenirs for sale. The room was large enough to fit our four futons comfortably. Yukata and slippers were provided. The futons were thick and very comfortable as well as the duvets. The onsen was wonderful. The staff were kind enough to recommend and help us book a restaurant for dinner for our big group of 8. The breakfast was exceptional, maybe our favorite of the trip.

Clean and nice room in the modern building. Wished we could have stayed in the older building but it was still nice.

Great location in the old part of Kiso. Great Japanese style room. Onsen with external option. Bar and free traditional tea space at the entrance.

Would recommend breakfast only for the first day, if even. It is definitely overpriced for what it is, but the „first day breakfast“ (you get a different menu depending on the duration of your stay) was very good. However, the second day breakfast was really bad. The quality was worse and it was very obvious that the value of the items was significantly lower than those from the first day (while you pay the same price of course). Tables next to us got the good „first day“ breakfast, so it’s not a matter of ingredient availability. The staff in the restaurant was not very welcoming and we did not feel comfortable there. We gave feedback on this issue but there were no real efforts to correct something. We just got a small notepad as an excuse.

The rooms are well-maintained and the Onsen is great. Location is very convenient, just a 10min walk to Kiso-Fukushima Station. The staff at the reception is super friendly. For dinner, we found great alternatives outside the hotel and the reception staff helped us get a reservation, which was super convenient.

We were not located in the main building but rather an annex across the road in a car park so I would not recommend that accommodation. The onsen is also blocked off so there is no view as shown in the picture

Fabulous food, really out of this world with excellent staff.

I really loved my stay at Onyado Tsutaya. The staff was very kind, the rooms were clean and modern and the onsen was absolutely delightful. I stayed in the annex across the street and would recommend it. I had breakfast at the hotel and was really impressed by the quality of their food and the hospitality of their staff I would stay here again.

2750 yen surcharge for dietary requirements per person and per meal

    • Submitted via mobile

I found the proposal to put a 2750 yen surcharge for dietary requirements steep, especially considering how that usually plays out: the requirement is no meat, but fish is okay. What usually happens is that the pork or beef is removed and replaced by mushrooms or if we are lucky, with fish. Nowhere else in Japan has this been an issue as it is quite simple. Now, the prospect of paying 6050 yen for a 3300 yen breakfast where they replace the meat with mushrooms was...brazen. I politely declined and I guess that was the purpose of putting such a surcharge on in the first place. Somehow that left such a bitter taste that I would have cancelled the entire stay hadn't it been so difficult to find another accommodation on relatively short notice.

In the evening they had nice music on the inside onsen.

Some onsen signs in English. I don't take cell phone to onsen so don't have translation app to read signs.

Big beautiful breakfast. Very clean. Onsen was nice and hot and so relaxing. Lovely traditional lobby area with free afternoon tea where can meet other guests and chat. Its in a great central location in town. Bus stop just outside hotel but can easily walk around town too for exercise and walking Nakasendo trail within town.

Only downside was that room was across the road from the main building. Not really an issue but some people might want to know.

Breakfast was ginormous, lots of varied dishes I couldn't finish it all even though it was delicious. Baths were beautiful and clean. Huuuuge TV.

A bit of a walk from the station, takes about 15 minutes. There was also no heater at the corridor so it can be cold walking to the onsen from the room

Got a free upgrade to a tatami room which was spacious and comfortable, there is both an indoor and outdoor onsen, staffs were also nice and considerate

The only downside is the breakfast. It is pretty below par, compared to the price.

It takes around 15 minutes from the train station to walk to the hotel. The hotel does provide a shuttle service when checking out. The room is comfortable and clean. The onsen is pretty good.

The Shoji sliding panels for the windows were difficult to move because the wood protector underneath was peeling off and would get stuck. Only a small hinderance though.

A lot attention to detail. A fair bit more than a usual Ryokan which tells me they care about the small things. We came during the holiday season where most shops and restaurants were shut in town. Something to bear in mind!

The male night staff was however not very helpful when we asked for fresh towels. He seems rather reluctant to accede to our request, but could be due to language barriers,

Location, and excellent service from owner and staff. Also gave good advice on dinner places, and proactive in offering options when weather conditions make it difficult to travel out. Love the tea and coffee at front of house. Very cosy and warm hospitality. Location is a very strong point,
