Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesNo fault of Onyado Tsutaya, but just a tip if you are over 6'2" your feet may hang off the end of the futon.
Communication beforehand was great. We liked that the walk from the train station to the hotel was short and convenient. We recommend staying in the main building in a Japanese style room which has a small but modern bathroom in the room. Upon arrival, we found the lobby to be chic and welcoming with tea, comfortable furnishings and a cute section of t-shirts and other souvenirs for sale. The room was large enough to fit our four futons comfortably. Yukata and slippers were provided. The futons were thick and very comfortable as well as the duvets. The onsen was wonderful. The staff were kind enough to recommend and help us book a restaurant for dinner for our big group of 8. The breakfast was exceptional, maybe our favorite of the trip.

GermanyWould recommend breakfast only for the first day, if even. It is definitely overpriced for what it is, but the „first day breakfast“ (you get a different menu depending on the duration of your stay) was very good. However, the second day breakfast was really bad. The quality was worse and it was very obvious that the value of the items was significantly lower than those from the first day (while you pay the same price of course). Tables next to us got the good „first day“ breakfast, so it’s not a matter of ingredient availability. The staff in the restaurant was not very welcoming and we did not feel comfortable there. We gave feedback on this issue but there were no real efforts to correct something. We just got a small notepad as an excuse.
The rooms are well-maintained and the Onsen is great. Location is very convenient, just a 10min walk to Kiso-Fukushima Station. The staff at the reception is super friendly. For dinner, we found great alternatives outside the hotel and the reception staff helped us get a reservation, which was super convenient.

SwitzerlandWe were not located in the main building but rather an annex across the road in a car park so I would not recommend that accommodation. The onsen is also blocked off so there is no view as shown in the picture

United StatesI really loved my stay at Onyado Tsutaya. The staff was very kind, the rooms were clean and modern and the onsen was absolutely delightful. I stayed in the annex across the street and would recommend it. I had breakfast at the hotel and was really impressed by the quality of their food and the hospitality of their staff I would stay here again.

AustraliaI found the proposal to put a 2750 yen surcharge for dietary requirements steep, especially considering how that usually plays out: the requirement is no meat, but fish is okay. What usually happens is that the pork or beef is removed and replaced by mushrooms or if we are lucky, with fish. Nowhere else in Japan has this been an issue as it is quite simple. Now, the prospect of paying 6050 yen for a 3300 yen breakfast where they replace the meat with mushrooms was...brazen. I politely declined and I guess that was the purpose of putting such a surcharge on in the first place. Somehow that left such a bitter taste that I would have cancelled the entire stay hadn't it been so difficult to find another accommodation on relatively short notice.
In the evening they had nice music on the inside onsen.

United StatesSome onsen signs in English. I don't take cell phone to onsen so don't have translation app to read signs.
Big beautiful breakfast. Very clean. Onsen was nice and hot and so relaxing. Lovely traditional lobby area with free afternoon tea where can meet other guests and chat. Its in a great central location in town. Bus stop just outside hotel but can easily walk around town too for exercise and walking Nakasendo trail within town.

JapanThe Shoji sliding panels for the windows were difficult to move because the wood protector underneath was peeling off and would get stuck. Only a small hinderance though.
A lot attention to detail. A fair bit more than a usual Ryokan which tells me they care about the small things. We came during the holiday season where most shops and restaurants were shut in town. Something to bear in mind!

Location, and excellent service from owner and staff. Also gave good advice on dinner places, and proactive in offering options when weather conditions make it difficult to travel out. Love the tea and coffee at front of house. Very cosy and warm hospitality. Location is a very strong point,
