Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SpainAccording to the original arquitecture of the house, some ceilings were low. Nothing really to complaint about it.
Nice, quiet ryokan. Highly oriented to detail staff, really oriented to customer. Welcome and stay was very pleasant. Traditional house with private onsen in your room. Traditional breakfast was superb!!

United StatesThere were mosquito nets over the bed, which they said were just decorative. We removed them because we preferred an open-air experience. Unfortunately we both got mosquito bites! There may have been a misunderstanding due to the language difference (though my husband speaks some Japanese!), but the "decorative" description seemed a bit misleading. Not a huge issue though!
Breakfast was delicious, as were the other snacks and beverages they provided. The staff was so friendly and kind. The in-room bath was lovely. I loved the way the room smelled (japanese incense) when we walked in. The service was wonderful (they helped us make a dinner reservation and recommended a restaurant).

ItalyNothing, it was all perfect
Calm and relaxing environment at Machi no Odoriba. We felt like home since the beginning and we had a real authentic ryokan experience. Very nice garden, private onsen in the room, nice tatami and comfortable Japanese pijama to wear. The staff done an incredible job: offered tea and Japanese sweets, remembered our vegetarian options, all explanations were clear and they tried to support us in everything. We also had kaiseki dinner and we really liked it. The chef cooked in front of us and we had nice conversation with the staff at the end.

PolandThat I had to leave.
The place is easily the best stay I had in Japan: great, spacious room (apartment rather) with own onsen-powered bath, amazing traditional Japanese breakfasts, lovely, open, and helpful staff & owner. Reasonably located in a typical small-street quarter of a Japanese city, which was in a reasonable walking distance from everything you might want to see in the city.

ItalyWe had the most amazing stay at Machi No Odoriba. The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and generous. The small attentions, like the free coffee and treats offered throughout the day, the pijamas and traditional yukata to wear for breakfast, made this a particularly special stay. The room/house was bigger than expected with plenty of room to relax and unwind, surrounded by beautiful furniture in a curated environment with attention to details. We also loved the location, nestled away in a quiet neighborhood, but incredibly close to the famous market and train station. We got a taste of authentic Kanazawa, which spans far beyond the geisha and samurai district where most tourist seemed to be found. The city of Kanazawa itself is beautiful, and altho there was many visitors, like us, we found it completely unspoiled by tourism. For sure, staying in this beautiful accommodation added so much to our trip. Also the breakfast was incredible and, even though I’m not used to a salty start, all I had to do was to keep an open mind and take one first bite!

Both breakfast and dinner (included in the price) were excellent. The two restaurant staff were very friendly, we really enjoyed interacting with them. The accommodation was spacious, beautiful and peaceful. We strongly recommend this accommodation.

United StatesOur host was very friendly and welcoming. This was one of the more expensive places we stayed wile in Japan, but thought the cost was well worth the experience. We ate a kaiseki style dinner at their restaurant across the street. The dinner was exceptional. The private onsen was fantastic and just as pictured. Our host gave us very comfortable yukatas to wear if we wished and taught us how to properly wear/tie them. We were served a traditional Japanese breakfast that was quite good. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to someone staying in Kanazawa. It was a fantastic experience and well worth the cost.

Staying at Machi no Odoriba was a truly memorable experience. We would like to warmly thank our hosts for their incredible hospitality. They introduced us to a charming atmosphere where even something as simple as a cold coffee became a delightful discovery. We highly recommend adding the dinner with the Chef to fully complete your stay.

United StatesThere was no down side about Machi no Odoriba. Only issue during our short stay was that 2 taxis could not find it and just let us out in the middle of a residential area. Thank goodness there were good people who helped us find the machiya. Perhaps the machiya could provide specific directions to guests.
Traditional and authentic Japanese atmosphere. The welcome and orientation to the machiya by Ms. Uchida was so graciously done. The furo (onsen bath) was heavenly. Breakfast was delicious. The garden was relaxing and beautiful. Dining at the sister restaurant, Hitotoki, was a culinary experience not to be missed!

Outstanding, every bit of it! The staff were incredible— Uchima, thank you for your care during our stay. You were a large part of what made our time there so special. Our room (more like full house!) was a dream. We haven’t stopped talking about it. We looked forward each morning to breakfast (the noodles I dream about— and definitely purchase their local soy and ponzu sauce to take home with you). The bath is cozy, the heated floors, honestly every single detail was carried out with the utmost care. Since returning home after a month in Japan, I think the most of our time spent in Kanazawa and specifically our stay at Mochi No Odoriba. If we can make it back to Japan this will be a MUST on our itinerary. Our memories of staying here we’ll truly cherish forever. Thank you!!

United KingdomAmazing stay! Would recommend to anyone staying in Kanazawa. Firstly, the staff is absolutely lovely and took a lot of time explaining how everything works, and offering us welcome drinks and sweets. Secondly, the accommodation is a traditional house, with the bedroom located in the old tea room and with a private onsen. Everything is magical and each room was a delight to discover with many nice details. Don’t miss their breakfast, or you’ll miss the full Japanese experience!

United KingdomThe only thing I could mention as a very minor negative is depending on what you want to do in Kanazawa the location may not be the ideal for everything you want to see, if you want things to be in a short walking distance. However overall it is still in a good location and lots of interesting places are very accessible.
We were so happy with our stay here. The staff were very nice, attentive and helpful. They explained the facilities very thoroughly, answered all of our questions and gave us nice recommendations. The space was amazing and exactly what we wanted from a Ryokan experience, and the bath was lovely. The special breakfast and coffee were delicious. If I'm lucky enough to be able to visit Kanazawa again, I will definitely want to stay here again.

United KingdomAs a relatively tall man 6'2 (188cm) I had to duck my head down whenever I was moving around the room. The ceilings are all high enough, but the doorways are about 5'9 (175cm) and I cracked my head a few times over the two days. I don't think this is a fault, it's just something to be aware of if you are taller than the doorway height.
This is the perfect place to stay if you want to experience a traditional ryokan, but with some modern touches. The private onsen is large and can actually pipe in real hot spring water in addition to regular hot water. The breakfasts are delicious and come straight to the ryokan from a partnered restaurant on the opposite side of the street. The staff are lovely and were very communicative before and during our stay. They even booked a restaurant for us, which I couldn't have done myself.

The staff were absolutely amazing and very friendly. The house itself was incredible to experience as it took me into a trip back into time into the Edo period with the structure but also maintained modern facilities such as air conditioning, television, fridge, etc The onsen bath was very comfortable especially after a day of exploring and adventuring however please keep in mind that this is not a free flowing onsen, this is an onsen bath that you would need to control manually.

United KingdomAs we are both very tall we struggled with the low ceilings a bit and there were parts of the house that were a bit cold. It didn’t take away from our experience though as it was all part of the traditional setting.
Wonderful traditional samurai house - we loved staying here! Lots of space and very thoughtful details, nice breakfast. The hospitality was wonderful - the ladies went above and beyond to accommodate us.
