Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

FranceAmazing hostel, the beds in the dorm rooms are so amazing and spacious, and its a solid wall between beds so no need to fear shaking from other occupants. The place is very spacious and very well equiped, and the lobby has a lot of space and places to hangout and work. It seemed to have a big communal life as well, making it the perfect place for remote workers to stay. I totally recommend and almost regret not having stayed longer.

Easily the best youth hostel that we have done in Japan. Confortable, clean and close to the train station with friendly staff.

GermanyI looked for the following criteria when booking this accommodation: 1) Shortest walking distance for public transport 2) Our own private room 3) Low cost compared to others We basically only used the room for sleeping. It has a sink and AC. Toilet and showers are in a shared area. Kitchen and shared fridge available. It is 5 min walking from Kyoto main Station with local trains, Shinkansen and bus. If you want to be more in the center of Kyoto, maybe better book the other Piece Hostel.

AustraliaBedroom was a tight. No showers on the floor my room was on (or at least I didn't see any) was a bit of a pain.
Good facilities on the ground floor, well located near the main train station. I did not use the property to it's full capabilities as I was injured and was bed bound for part of my short stay. On the plus side there is a walk-in clinic with an English speaking doctor a short walk away! A really nice open and bright reception/ground floor. Offers a good space to meet up with friends/others in the hostel.

GermanySuper spacious kitchen and chillout area with more than enough space to eat, cook or play some games. The kitchen, toilets and showers were always very clean aswell as the rooms themselves. There is not much space inside each room, but it is not necessary. Therefore the beds are super big and comfortable. There is a beautiful terrace to hang out outside and the staff is really nice, helpful and they all speak english fluently, which makes communication easy. There is a possibility to wash and dry your clothes via coin machines and you can always take as many towels as you need for each shower. And a big bonus on top: it is super affordable and I think if you travel alone, it is easy to make new friends here, since they offer a video game night every second evening. We loved it :)

United StatesReally nice hostel that is well designed, very clean & in a good location. I’ve heard good things about their other Kyoto location, but we needed to stay near the train station, so we chose this location & really loved it. It’s right by the train station, but on a quiet street & has a nice roof deck, back patio, kitchen & reception lounge areas. The staff are really friendly & nice & keep the place clean & well maintained. We only stayed 2 nights & had a private room with shared bathrooms, but we would stay there longer if we had more time. Cool staff, great library selection & nice organization of space there to provide a variety of spaces & services. Computers, laundry, video games, bar, breakfast, cooking/kitchen, indoor & outdoor lounge & patio spaces, even a soaking bathtub & getting ready area in addition to the shower rooms.

NetherlandsNote that you have to pay extra taxes Note that showers are only at the ground level. If you sleep at level 4 you have to go down with the elevator. Which is easy btw.
Nice common lounge. The private room had a nice big matrass. Free coffee from the machine.

United Arab EmiratesTheir other hostel (Piece Hostel Sanjo) is better in terms of activities, amenities and location for sightseeing.
The biggest advantage of this hostel is if you staying for a short time in Kyoto, this hostel is located near main Kyoto Station where all the shinkansen and main trains and midnight buses intersect.

GermanyThe air in the room and the hallway felt constantly damp. No idea if its the ventilation system or they just need to open the windows sometimes. Also no insect net infront of the window.
Sink in the room was very convenient. Seperate showers with enough room to put your clothing was also very nice.

United KingdomVery very minor - rooms were quite small (no smaller than advertised on website!) but just bear this in mind - you would likely not want to stay multiple days with suitcases as there is limited space to open them in the room. But this is the only small thing and it’s also what we expected/knew in advance!
Excellent location - 5mins walk from Kyoto main station Super friendly, clean, modern. Lots of amenities (towels, slippers, shower stuff) and Dyson hairdryers!! Very cute activities run by the hostel - we were only there 1 night so couldn’t do these but there were video game nights, picnic by river, bar nights etc being advertised! Lots of information about things around Kyoto on the walls etc and staff very helpful. Cheap and good breakfast, 24hr tea/coffee, big kitchen etc.

United StatesGot confusing notification that children could not stay, but after following up directly with hostel our teenagers were fine. Agree the hostel is not suited for young children, so better description of the children policy during booking could help.
Family room is spacious. Great access to public transportation options. Shared bathrooms clean and well maintained. Shared common spaces comfortable and welcoming. Onsite laundry.
