The temples are located in the middle of a forest at the base of a mountain, there will be bugs here and there and not everything will be as clean as other accommodations in Tokyo or Kyoto.

Beautiful experience, I really recommend it. It was so interesting and beautiful to sleep in traditional Japanese bedrooms, one of my most positively surprising accommodations of my life. The food is excellent, there where things I have never tasted in my life. The morning ceremony was interesting and I was really happy for the opportunity, all the people from the temple where really helpful, kind and joyful.

Staff was phenomenal. Location is great, there are plenty of bus stops so you can move left or right. The room with the garden view was magical. Attend the ritual in the morning, it is really nice.

There was nothing we did not like.

We stayed two nights in Koyasan at Fugen-in temple and it left a long-lasting impression of serenity and kindness. The temple has a long history and many works of art. Attending the morning prayer was a meditative experience. The monks were very friendly and explained about the Haiku temple in Fugen-in's garden. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, so well-balanced and lovingly prepared. The room was clean and had everything we needed, we felt well taken care of. The water of the onsen was very hot and relaxing. Fugen-in's location is perfect, very central and right around the corner of the tourist information. What also stays with us is the beautiful sound of the local cicadas.

Our only complaint would be that the futons were thinner than others we had slept more comfortably on in ryokans elsewhere in Japan, I had to double mine over lengthways & sleep on what ended up as a very narrow bed - we knew we would be sleeping on futons on tatami mats, but this was the least comfortable night of our month in Japan.

The dinner & breakfast were both excellent, & the staff were great. The building was fascinating & the morning service with the monks wonderfully atmospheric & enlightening.

I love a hard bed, but these were a bit over the top hard. 😅 we have stayed in other places with futon beds without a problem.

The monks were super kind and welcoming, the temple was beautiful, clean, spacious rooms, perfect for some relaxation time. The food was delicious!!! And the morning pray ceremony was beautiful and very informative.

Perfect stay. The monks are super friendly even if they don’t speak english. The food is good and very traditional and the rooms are great. Spacious tatami style, loved it so much I regret not staying longer. They even give you a flashlight if you want to explore at night. The placement is perfectly fine.

It a beautiful temple, it is very well kept. The room was very spacious and comfortable, all in tatami floor, tastefully decorated, very clean and well maintained, with aircon available and even a TV. I loved that there was a complimentary tea, a yukata and a toothbrush. The temple has a bath (onsen) available and a morning prayer ceremony.

No kettle in the room. And absolutely nowhere to fill the provided thermos with hot water. Keep in mind that the temple will close at 9pm and the bath at 10pm. On the other hand, the city will get dark and everything will close at about 7pm, so there will be nothing to do except sleep. I hope my money will go towards repairs...

Nice authentic experience. Yes it's expensive but you do it once in a lifetime like Venice gondola boat trip so totally woth the money. Consider this like living in museum. Merry and helpful monks will meat you. Authentic sleaping on tatami under futon blankets. No private bath room, but visiting japanese public sento is easy and fun. Buddhist style supper and breakfast, so don't expect any meat or fish - this is a tofu world. But food is tasty and fancy served special for you in room with beautifully painted screens. If you are an early bird, you can visit Buddhists ceremony at 6:30am. Because you are staying in the temple - you can visit it. It's gorgeously beautiful. Koyasan is full of temples and sacreed places. Memorial cemetery is place of serenity and old mysterious graves among the huge trees. The fanciest place for smoking I've ever seen! So place is recommended to visit and stay in.!

The property and room had a bad smell and it didn’t look like properly cleaned. A lot of dust. We weren’t able to sleep for the uncomfortable of it. Food even though included was poor. I’m wondering if it’s a standard of the city but spending 300€ on one night felt a bit excessive.

The experience was ok, especially the morning chants. The city is cute although quite deserted.

We booked a big room insted the room that was given to us was small and stincky. We paid more than the room was advertised. The property said it was within their right to downgrade us to a smaller room. I am od the opinion that this is also Bookings fault. You should do better when presenting a secific rom tipe in Japan.
