How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Verified reviewVery beautiful place to stay when visiting Kyoto. The room was bigger than most of the hotel rooms we’ve seen in our trip. It was very clean and comfortable, free coffee available, free toiletries. They also have a coin washing machine at the hotel that you can use. Everything was perfect.

It's not possible to open the window and get some fresh air. There was no wardrobe to put clothes or bags to (there were some hooks with hangers on the wall though).

Verified reviewLocation was good, quite central to all major areas and not too far from subway, train and bus.
The smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in. Room was so small that we could not even walk around the bed. One person had to climb over the other person to get out of bed or visit the bathroom. No closet at all! Nowhere to put anything. Luggage had to be stored under bed at all times as nowhere to put even one suitcase. This was advertised as a double room but to be honest it was really only meant for one person. Claustrophobic.

Verified reviewOur favourite hotel of our Japan stay. The staff were amazing, friendly, polite and super helpful at every step, holding our luggage for us when needed and calling us a taxi on the way out. The room was beautiful, good size and had everything we needed. Incredible location, minutes from the Gion Mitsuri festival that we were lucky to see, but still quiet and separate from the noise. Great spot to go to explore Gion, come back for a shower after the summer heat, then get back out to explore some more. 7 Eleven store was minutes away and became a staple for our stay.

Verified reviewGreat location; close to transit, the market, and restaurants. The room felt bigger than typical hotel rooms. Bathroom was very spacious. Shelf space, number of power plugs, cleanliness of room and hotel were all wonderful positives.
Only one washer/dryer for the entire hotel.

Verified reviewA beautiful boutique hotel in an amazing location - who would not love to wander in the surrounding streets and get back to this kyo-machiya building for rest after an amazing day in Kyoto? The room is spacious, comfortable and overlooked the amazing Nakagyo streets. The smell in the lobby always welcomed us nicely. Loved the extras and coffee in the room, too.

Verified reviewClose to train station, 7-11, temples, restaurants, beautiful quiet street, we often saw geisha women walking down the street at night, close to the river which was relaxing.
The room and bed were too small for 2 adults and a child , was my fault for booking a one bedroom room.

Verified reviewClean rooms, excellent location! Staff helped us ship our luggage. There is a washer in the lobby, but we used the washer at a self service laundromat which was excellent and less than a block away. There are many small restaurants within minutes of the hotel. The location near the river is perfect.
The room was small which is typical for Japanese hotels.

Verified reviewEverything! Especially the bathroom. It was REALLY nice- I always enjoy a nice clean bathroom. That exceeds everything for me. The room also felt very clean, and they replace your towels for you. The staff was spectacular and very accommodating. Very nice place that was in walking distance to a lot of the popular attractions. I would stay again!

The one washing machine was always busy, but we found a self-laundry right around the corner. It could use some more hanging areas for clothing or an iron to press out the wrinkles.

Verified reviewBest hotel of our trip to Japan – highly recommended! We stayed in many hotels during our trip to Japan, but this was definitely the best! If I return to Kyoto, I would absolutely stay here again. The rooms are beautiful, very well organized, and spotlessly clean. The front desk staff were incredibly kind and always available to help with anything we needed. There’s a washing machine and dryer available (for a fee), and a free water dispenser which was super convenient. The location was perfect – just 800 meters from Gion and Nishiki Market, and about 1.2 km walking distance to Kiyomizudera. You can leave your luggage at the hotel both before check-in and after check-out. The bus and train stations are also very close by. Everything is within walking distance, yet it’s incredibly quiet at night, and the beds are very comfortable. Truly an excellent hotel, and I highly, highly recommend it.

Verified reviewThe staff was super friendly and helpful. Our room was as new and very clean and had enough space for our big suitcases. The train, convenience stores, plenty of restaurants and bars are close by. Many sightseeing attractions are easy to reach by foot. Beautiful neighborhood.
