The hotel was wonderful. We really enjoyed the kimono and the elegant décor. The onsen was relaxing and fun, and the room was spacious and cozy

The price feels too high for a family of four staying together in a single roo

Gorgeous traditional guesthouse in Takayama, with its own private Onsen. Very comfortable rooms and beautiful reception and dining rooms. Very convenient for the train/bus station for those visiting by public transport.

All lovely, would definitely stay again!

Absolutely charming ryokan. Great attention to every detail- beautifully appointed accommodation and very friendly staff. Gorgeous Onsen facility which was quiet and almost empty. We had the special supper which was incredibly intricate and beautifully presented.

Room was beautiful, clean and spacious with useful amenities (fridge, safe, TV, storage). Provide a list of their recommended restaurants for different cuisines and dietary requirements. Japanese breakfast was excellent and the onsen was spacious, clean and filled with extras that made it feel luxurious. Location is great, only a 10-15 minute walk from most things as Takayama is not big. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Unforgettable experience! The place is amazing, the staff very kind (especially the lady at the reception desk, she speaks very good Ensligh). We tried the traditional Japanese dinner and it was delicious (they also managed to cater my food allergies, thing that is not always to take for granted in Japan). They have a tattoo-friendly public onsen, too. Absolutely recommended!

Lovely welcome, excellent location, wonderfully decorated property which is lovely to spend time in - we appreciated the coffee in the lounge, the delightful Onsen and the absolutely delightful breakfast. It was a lovely surprise that the Japanese set breakfast was different for each of our two mornings.

The futon was a little too hard for us and - visiting in the summer, we would have appreciated a blind/curtain covering all the windows so we didn’t wake up quite so early (in our room there was a higher window without a covering)

From you enter the reception you are met with a beautiful traditional Japanese interier, it is very well done. Everyone there were very polite and respectful, from staff to other guests. We three women arrived around 16, were able to select a cute yukata each we wore as much as possible for our one night stay, and were shown our room which were as big as a small apartment. We choose to go directly to the onsen which had just opened for the afternoon and had the place for ourselves. Very well stocked with brushes, hairties, lotions, everything free to use! the rooms were nice and comfortable, there was a beautiful tea set for us to use so we had a tea party in our yukatas, before dinner. We had paid for the dinner which was serving after serving of small dishes and a particularly tasty hida beef with miso dish. The beds and shower were great, nothing to complain about there, we had the traditional breakfast the day after with a self serve bar of drinks such as tea, coffee, juice and milk. Oh and we also went down to the onsen before breakfast and were once again alone to relax and take our time. It was probably the most expensive stay we have included on our trip but it was also by far the best experience we have had, and can recommend anyone to try it even just for a night like us, if not more ☺️

ryokan Asunaro is beautiful, the welcome warm and enthusiastic and they have thought of everything to make your experience as great as possible. It’s close to the station but just a short walk from the centre. The dinner I booked with them was simply sublime and I took Japanese breakfasts on both days and each was different. I cannot praise it highly enough.

I loved it. Totally loved it.

Beautifully appointed Ryokan. We decided to do the breakfast and traditional dinner and it was amazing! The location was a huge plus and within walking distance to the areas we were looking to visit. Loved our experience.

The room was very comfortable and spacious, as well as clean and well kept. The location was also very convenient, just a short walk from the train and bus station.

This was advertised as a premier lux ryokan and I was expecting a larger onsen area and a nicer presentation overall. The staff was also not as friendly as I had hoped. The meals were not up to par with other meals I have had at ryokan, and breakfast was repeated for two days. For reference, I’ve been to Japan 4 times and stayed at 8 different onsen ryokan in different areas. I loved Hida Takayama, but u would recommend a different ryokan.

    Property response:

We sincerely apologize that your recent stay with us did not meet your expectations. However, we are very pleased to hear that you found your room comfortable, spacious, and clean, and that our location was convenient for you. We are truly sorry that the size of our onsen area, the overall atmosphere, the staff's service, and the meals were not to your satisfaction. While we strive to provide a high standard of service, we want to clarify that we do not advertise ourselves as a "luxury ryokan." If we inadvertently gave you that impression, we deeply regret any misunderstanding. Regarding your meals, your reservation included breakfast for both nights. Our records indicate that we served a Japanese-style breakfast on the first morning and a Western-style breakfast on the second, offering different selections. If you did receive the same meal two days in a row, it was an oversight on our part, and for that, we sincerely apologize. We highly value your feedback, especially given your extensive experience staying at eight different onsen ryokans across Japan. We are taking your comments seriously and will use them to continuously improve our services. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in Hida Takayama. Thank you again for sharing your valuable insights with us.

Room was clean and spacious with lovely decorations and nice facilities. Staff were very friendly. Location was good. It was a comfortable place to stay during the float festival. Breakfast and dinners were sumptuous.

Only allowed to book dinner for 1 night although we stayed 3 nights. Public bath was too small, without outdoor bath. We also didn’t like the notice in the elevator asking for good rating in exchange for a gift.

    Property response:

Thanks for staying with us! We're happy you enjoyed your time here. Regarding Your Feedback Dinner Reservations We apologize that you could only book dinner for one night. We used to offer dinner for longer stays, but many guests canceled their second-night dinner to try Takayama's excellent local restaurants. To encourage guests to explore our town's diverse food scene, we now limit dinner bookings to one night per stay. Public Bath As a small inn in the city center, our public bath is indeed compact. We appreciate your understanding of our limited space. Review Incentive We're sorry if our elevator notice about a gift for reviews caused confusion. In Japan, it's common for businesses to offer a small thank-you for feedback. We simply wanted to show our appreciation for your review, not to imply a good rating was required. Since this has caused misunderstandings, we've removed any mention of a gift for reviews. We hope this clarifies things! We'd love to welcome you back to Takayama.

Superb toiletries: If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, do not hesitate to book this Ryokan. The breakfast is a deep immersion in to the traditional Japanese cuisine.
