Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ItalyVery traditional ryokan in the heart of Ueno. The owner is extremely courteous and helpful: he kept our luggages with no problem, found us a paper box when in need, and gives guest umbrella if raining. The room was very big, with a comfortable futon bed and all the amenities. Close to a multitude of nice restaurant and izakaya (reserve!).

NorwayIf you're tall, it's easy to hit your head.
Great Ryokan. Around 10-15 minutes away from Ueno station yet the neighbourhood is incredibly peaceful. So you have both the bustle of Ueno Ameyoko, the nearby zoo, museums and temples, but also the charming and cosy neighbourhood of Nezu with its shops, cafes and shrine on the other side. The Ryokan itself is homey and old school, very stylish, with a great staff. It's great to return to after spending too much time in Shinjuku. It's a great inn all around with classic Japanese style if that's what you looking for. I personally find ryokans more comfortable. Also apparently Pete Seeger visited once.

United StatesIt’s an older property and the furnishings could use a little updating. This is a very minor gripe and does not take away from the great experience of staying here.
*Great host family! Very nice and accommodating. *Location is perfect for a more authentic local Japanese experience. *Close to Nezu Subway Station (5 minute walk) *Close to Ueno Park which has multiple National Museums, Zoo, Temple, Shrine for a cultural experience. *Konbini across the street makes it convenient for grabbing a quick bite, drink or other necessities.

CanadaWe stayed for two weeks and enjoyed the entire stay. It was our first proper vacation, and we couldn't have asked for more. We picked a room with communal facilities. The staff are incredibly kind and helpful people who provided us with recommendations and even some snacks and small keepsakes. On the final day, the owner even drove us and our luggage to the nearby station in his own car! Facilities were convenient and cleaned daily and despite being communal, there were no points where I felt that things were dirty or that I didn't want to use them. You have basically everything you need in the ryokan, including a fridge, freezer, microwave, and laundry, and are even provided with a comfortable yukata and slippers to wear around communal areas. There aren't so many rooms that we ever felt that we were waiting to use the facilities, or were being disturbed by other guests beyond enjoyment. Also, the Wi-Fi was incredible. The area is really unparalleled. It's close to Ueno station which can connect you to all of Tokyo, as well as Keisei-Ueno which has express service to and from Narita airport. Ueno park itself is a beautiful place to walk through and takes you right to Ameyoko shopping street and Asakusa, so you'll never get bored even at night. Despite all this, the neighbourhood itself is very quiet and filled with small local cafes of all types. There's also easy access to a 7/11 where you can grab some food whenever you want. Opting for communal facilities definitely offers a bit more of the hostel experience, but it was exactly what my spouse and I were looking for with our budget, and of course the rooms are all completely private. It's important to remember to be quiet and mindful of other guests at night. We saw many friendly people come and go, both Japanese and English-speaking, and all were able to communicate with the hosts and enjoy their stay. I hope we can come back soon!

FranceThe only bothersome thing was the light in the rooms, which, as in many Japanese hotels, was bright and fluourescent-ish. It would be nice if there was a dimmer on the switch. Otherwise, no complaints!
Loved the neighborhood, calm, close to Ueno Park and the Nezu Metro station, with human-sized buildings. The room was basic but traditional, with tatami mats and comfortable futons on the floor. The managers were very nice and friendly, even if their English is limited. There's a common area where you can bring food to eat, and a convenience store across the street that was very convenient!

CanadaShared common spaces with other rooms was troublesome during our stay but there is little that can be done on the property owners side of that.
Very comfy ryokan with ample space for 3 adults. The owners are very nice and accommodating. The facilities were clean and housekeeping was very good. Location is quiet, clean, and has nice scenery for walking.

JapanThe curfew rule is a bit confusing. We are asked to close the door after 9pm when entering the ryokan, and we are given a code to enter the ryokan after 9pm. But it is not clear how to close the door when leaving the ryokan.
Great check in and very friendly staff. The ryokan is located in a lovely residential area near Ueno park. There are several nice restaurants in route 319 nearby. The room is small, but there is a living room with sofas that you can use. Overall great place to stay.
