    Nothing to complain.

This place is amazing! The location is great, close to two metro/train stations and not far from Asakusa, Akihabara, and Ueno. It’s a very calm neighborhood, and I had no problems at all. But the best part was the staff! The owner was super lovely and gave me tips on places to visit every day, depending on where I was headed and he was there to help basically 24/7. When I was leaving, he even helped me carry my luggage from the hotel to the train station. This place is perfect for a long stay: fresh towels every day, good AC, good Wi-Fi, comfortable rooms and close to both a 7-Eleven and a Lawson.

Felt a little sore after sleeping on the floor, but it comes with the territory.

Staying at this traditional ryokan for my first stay in Japan is an experience I wouldn't trade for any 5-star hotel.

This was booked for my sister who was traveling alone. Her review is: A perfect blend of traditional furnishings (tatami rooms with futons) and modern amenities (showers, fridge, washer, dryer). Whatever extra needs you have, the proprietor, Tatsuo-san, will make it happen. The man never sleeps and makes you feel 100% taken care of. His wife is seldom there, but her hand is felt throughout the house and in the way the place is run. Just follow the (few, reasonable) house rules, and you will have your own perfect quiet island

Great place to stay, old japanese style, very atmospheric, good location, cheap supermarket nearby. But what adds to the magic and power of this place is the host - Mr. Tatsuo. An amazing man, who from the first minutes of my stay was extremely helpful and immediately showed me interesting places nearby. But not only nearby, every time I went somewhere, Mr. Tatsuo would show me and suggest interesting points of interest in the particular place in Tokyo I happened to be heading to. As a result, this place will stay in my memory for a very long time. I can recommend it to anyone who respects japanese culture and wanted to learn more about it.

The building itself is relatively old and made with wood so you can hear footsteps and walls were not very soundproof. Personally I am very quiet and don't really mind the noise too much - especially for the price. Fridges were shared and you could not cook in the inn. It's a small gripe but you can easily make do by going out to eat.

I normally don't write reviews for things, but it would leave a bad taste in my mouth if I didn't, considering my wonderful 3-week experience here. The tatami matting and futon laid on the floor were very comfortable, one of the best things I've ever slept on. I also enjoyed Tatsuo's (the owner) friendly personality and deep in-depth knowledge of lesser-known spots of Tokyo. It's quite clear that he has a genuine love for people and truly wishes for them to learn about Japanese culture. Despite travelling solo, I did not feel alone as I was always greeted and sent off during my daily excursions in the city. Tatsuo also helped me get back to the airport by calling in a cab as well as helping me with my luggage. The price was also more than fair considering location and comfort.

Amazing Ryokan hospitality experience off the beaten track

Just bear in mind that this is a Ryokan, so if you are a very light sleeper or cannot do without a large room, this might not be for you. Also, this neighborhood is not really central, so it takes a little longer to get to most of the sights (and airports!) and there are not so many dining options in the vicinity.

Out of all the many places I have stayed at so far, this was the nicest experience in terms of hospitality. The owner is really an amazing host and goes out of his way to accommodate. He gives great advices on what to do and see in which neighborhoods and always made sure to welcome me when I came back to the hostel or to see me off with a small blessing every time I left. He also helped me out a lot by organizing a taxi so that I could catch a super early flight - and then he came to see me off in the morning as well. Other points: - The rooms are small (well, Japan!) but clean, as is the rest of the accomodation. - The walls are quite thin, but I had no issue with noise from the neighbors. - The area is very quiet and residential. - There is a supermarket nearby with generous opening hours. And, of course, several convenience stores. Staying in a Ryokan is a great experience while traveling in Japan. Staying in this one was fantastic.

    Nothing no complaints at all

I am so happy I picked Nakadaya, the manager and owner Mr Tatsuo really made my first time solo travelling and first time in Japan so special. He might be the most attentive human I have ever met! He helped me plan my days of activities, shopping and restaurants everyday. I got to see parts of Tokyo I definitely would have missed without his guidance. He made me excited to come back ‘home’ everyday with his friendly welcome and blessings. The ryokan is exceptionally clean, even cleaning the rooms everyday! I loved the area being a quiet neighbourhood but easily connected to the rest of Tokyo. I will be coming back and recommending to everyone particularly if it’s their first time in Tokyo!

Not many restaurants/cafes in the area. There is a grocery store nearby though.

10 minute walk to the station. Quiet area. Amenities were just what I needed for a solo trip to Tokyo for a week. Older building, but everything was kept neat and tidy. Had a rustic feel to the place.

    Nothing.

Wonderful place to stay – it's close to the station, it has a calm and cozy atmosphere, and it is clean. If you are afraid of sleeping on the ground, don't be – the beds are super comfortable and better than most of 'standard' beds I slept in. Also, the host is just amazing. He helped us whenever we needed, and recommended awesome places we would never know about otherwise. Best host I ever met, thank you Tatsuo!

As described the building is very old so depending on who else is staying will depend on how much noise there is.

Exactly as described and shown in photos. The room and all of the shared areas were always clean. The host was amazing and showed us true hospitality! This man is a well of knowledge and can help you with quite literally anything you need to know. We were given so many awesome recommendations everyday for different areas we wanted to go. We were also blessed everytime we left the house and welcomed every time we returned. Can highly recommend this stay!

-Due to the authentic ryokan experience, the unfortunate drawback is that the flooring and stairs creak a bit loudly upon stepping on them, which can be heard from most rooms. As such, I'd recommend to be mindful of your steps when you are walking, especially early in the morning or late at night, and you should bring earplugs if you really can't stand noise when sleeping -Not really a huge issue, but Minamisenju is mostly a residential area with hotels and so forth. As such, there is nearly no hot spots for tourism or dining.

-Most helpful and attentive host I ever had. Even as someone who went to Tokyo multiple times, I was surprised by the sheer number of suggestions and secret spots Mr Tatsuo could recommend in most areas in Tokyo -Extremely comfortable futon (3 layers, no less!). I can't overstate that it was pretty much as comfortable as my mattress bed at home which really surprised me. -Facilities were very clean and perfectly operational, with laundry, towels, microwave also at your disposal -Close to the metro and JR station -There are 2 supermarkets and few conbini nearby in case you need to buy food and other stuff -The neighborhood is pretty quiet

It's smoking, but I don't believe it was the ryokan's fault. Our room was facing the front wall, and Japan has a massive smoking culture, so while I liked to avoid the smell, it makes it really hard to. I personally didn't close the windows because my brother who was sharing the room with me seemed to prefer the windows open (and he smokes).

Everyone there is very welcoming. Whether you've experienced Japan or exploring for the first time, Tatsuo-san will always have stops ready for new places to explore.

If Japanese hospitality was a person, that would be Tatsuo-san. As the owner of a 90-year old ryokan, you can expect a traditional yet welcoming stay at this place from him. We arrived in August (peak summer period), but the rooms were super comfortable with air conditioning, traditional tatami mats and futons. Only watch out for the thin walls and creaky floorboards, as one would expect of an old building. There are 3 bathrooms to share between guests, but we didnt find it an issue during our stay as there are rarely people during our shower times. Location wise may be slightly further away from typical places like Shinjuku and Shibuya, but the Minami-senju line a 10 minute walk away poses no problem for travelling, especially if you want to visit Akihabara alongside a quick transit at Ueno station to other major JR lines. As others have pointed out, Tatsuo-san was the highlight of our trip. Hospitality aside, his knowledge as a local (and capability to speak fluent English) gave us so many recommendations that you wont be able to find elsewhere. We always find the opportunity to speak with him about places to visit and eat, which wasn’t hard at all as he always greeted us whenever we left and came back. If you are expecting a budget-friendly and non-touristy visit to Japan, this is the place for you. Arigatou gozaimasu, Tatsuo-san!!
