How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis wonderful family-run traditional Japanese inn in Kyoto was one of my favorite places that I stayed in while in Japan. The rooms are cozy and traditionally Japanese and the bathrooms, like most ryokan, are shared. It is centrally located yet very peaceful. The doors lock at 11pm for security and I didn’t mind at all. It is run by very kind people and every night that I was there, I felt like I was coming home.

It was a pleasure to experience such hospitality. The rooms are clean, they have all you need. The place is very conveniently located - near the station.

Verified reviewThe location is great, 5 mins away from Nishiki market and lots of shopping and good food around. The Host is a sweet elderly lady who runs the place. If you want a traditional ryokan experience this is the place. I would definitely come back for the next Kyoto visit.

Verified reviewThe staff was very friendly and kind. We had the chance to practice our basic Japanese with the staff. The facilities were very nice, clean, organized and as we expected, traditional Japanese. Located close to the mini market, temple, restaurants and metro station.
Everything was excellent

Verified reviewThis traditional inn gave me exactly the stay in Kyoto that I'd hoped for! A short walk from the bustle of the Shijo Karasuma shopping area, in a quiet back street, this is a comfortable home where the sweet ladies who run it welcome you back at the end of the day like family. They speak very little English so if you have some Japanese ability, it's very helpful, but they have a welcoming area at the entrance with English language guide books, maps, pamphlets, and other useful items for their visitors, and they have made up handy sheets in the rooms explaining (in English and with pictures!) how to use a Japanese bath and put on a yukata and other unfamiliar aspects of staying in this type of lodging. And while you stay here you will have a comfortable futon to sleep on, a deep hot Japanese bathtub they will heat up for you in the evening (as well as a shower you can take any time), and a fresh thermos of hot water with tea bags and a cup in your room to come back to in the evening. The location is very convenient for using public transportation as well as for local shopping: both the foodie Nishiki market and the very broad-ranging Teramachi shopping street are just the other side of Karasuma St, and both subway lines that cross the city are there too as well as multiple bus lines. Gion and Pontocho, with their geisha-centered streets, are 10-15 minutes' walk away across the Kamo River. There are convenience stores nearby where you can drop off your luggage to be sent to the airport or your next destination, as well as pick up something to have for breakfast. Lots of interesting restaurants of various kinds, too. There are lots of modern hotels of various luxury levels around this city where you can have the same comfortable, familiar experience as in any city. Staying here will give you a uniquely old-fashioned Kyoto experience that will make you feel you have really traveled to a specific place that is not like where you have been before.
Nothing! I loved staying here and will be happy to be back again.

Verified reviewOh I loved this place and regret that I had only 1 night there. It's run by an elderly woman who is super friendly and laughs a lot. It's lovingly old fashioned, clean and traditional. The owner had the heater on and ready for me to have my shower as it was 4° out. I would definitely stay here again

Verified reviewVery kind service, the room was big and comfy, came with a yukata for the stay, and I was welcomed with matcha and a delicious sweet
I was aware of the curfew and it didn’t really affect me, but I can imagine the hard cutoff at 11pm would’ve been annoying if I had stayed longer.

Verified reviewThe location was perfect, close to the metro and with a really nice neighborhood. Pleasant view from our room that was facing the tiny garden in the ryokan. The owners were very kind 😊
There is a curfew at 11pm and we had to change our plans during our stay in Kyoto 🙁
