Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ItalyThe hotel is a bit dated and could benefit from some modern updates. The room doors are difficult to open and show signs of wear. It would be helpful to improve their functionality and appearance.
Pleasant and hassle-free stay. The property is clean, and the staff is courteous and helpful. Overall, it offers a quiet and comfortable experience.

NetherlandsThe Public bath (onsen) was too cold (maybe 38 degrees). The bathroom smelled bad, and when you leave and take the key out, the fan in the Bathroom stops, which is why it smells there, the air doesn't circulate. The whole room had bad aircirculation, which meant my clothes didn't dry at all. The Futon was very thin, thinner than most which can take some getting used to for western travellers. Not a big issue, but usually there is another futon in the closet, so you can just stack two. But there were none. The TV and Air conditioning were at least 25 years old, so basically the TV was just a prop.
It's close to Kyoto Train Station. The room is traditional Ryokan.

GermanySome of the old furnishings were a bit worn-out. I also had a very old air conditioner in my room that took a long time to cool the room and was quite loud. So maybe some facilities could be renovated without losing the historical charm. The room also seemed to have no curtains or way of blocking the light coming in? So I woke up quite early. But maybe I misunderstood how the windows work.
It is a retro hotel with a lot of old 1960s-1970s furnishings still intact. An interesting cultural experience to stay here for a couple of nights. The staff were very helpful, the room was spacious, the breakfast was large and high quality. The hotel has a private onsen that was very nice.

PhilippinesA little pricey for what’s included, but the location and charm made up for it.
A memorable experience to stay at this Ryokan! It’s a quick walk from the station with shops and restaurants nearby. The room was cozy with complimentary tea and water.

GermanyI stayed two nights and it was very convenient for staying close to Kyoto Station. Also I liked the bath as it felt cleaner and more spacious as my owns room bathroom. Sleeping on the floor and having the traditional feeling was great, but the hotel itself is just “old” as in used - which shows at doors, tables etc. however it was clean and quite to stay at. The staff was the most welcoming and hard working people I have met so far on my trip!

United StatesThere wasn’t much of an explanation on how I can have a traditional ryokan meal at this location.
The traditional atmosphere with a little of a modern touch.

SwedenAs it was my first experience with this supposedly famous ryokan I found it extremely uncomfortable. I am 1.78cm (5.10) tall and the floor seating opportunity at the table & mattress on the floor was beyond uncomfortable. Since I suffered a sore back . The open bath provided wasn’t worth mentioning. Not for me . Never again .

United KingdomThe price was high per night for what you get.
It was great to stay in a Ryokan and it’s within a short walk from the station and lots of stores and restaurants. The room was comfy enough and they provided tea and water. There’s also a lovely hot onsen style bath.

Hong KongThe bed is not an authentic Ryokan, they had the tatami floor, but the mattress was the same as the blanket, hence very hard and uncomfortable

United StatesThe downside of the old ryokan is that the facilities in the room are not always upgraded. I love washlet toiltes when I travel to Japan - but they did not have that in my room. Their futon was thinner / flatter than I preferred and I had difficulty having a good night sleep.
Comparing to modern hotel rooms, rooms in ryokans are typically larger in the urban areas. Ryokans usually have shared bath with a huge tubs - that's why I chose ryokan over hotels.

United KingdomThe futon was thin and directly placed on the floor - for sure genuine Japanese experience but a bit uncomfortable. I would still recommend this place anyway!
Very nice place and area, but be prepared! No mattress under the futon, so it can be quite uncomfortable if you are not used to it!

United StatesHaving to take my shoes off at the door of the hotel.... Let me do that in my room.
It was a traditional Ryokan experience. Bed was really nothing more than an extra large sheet. So very stiff. I guess this is what it was like to be a Samurai? Sort of close to the main station. About 5 minutes by walking. With suitcases, it's just at the distance where it starts to feel far. With backpack it was fine.
