How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewPleasant and hassle-free stay. The property is clean, and the staff is courteous and helpful. Overall, it offers a quiet and comfortable experience.
The hotel is a bit dated and could benefit from some modern updates. The room doors are difficult to open and show signs of wear. It would be helpful to improve their functionality and appearance.
Thank you for staying at Ryokan Wakamiya. We are pleased to hear that you were satisfied with our staff's service. However, we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the door to your room. We take your feedback seriously and will strive to improve. Thank you for your feedback.

Verified reviewThe staff were more than helpful to talk too.. the hotel is a beautiful traditional Japanese experience.. it's a short walk to the main train station it's close to the bus stops and I really enjoyed my time there! Very wholesome place ! Love it!
There wasn't an AC in the room but I didn't mind .. it was a beautiful traditional Japanese room!
Thank you for staying at Wakamiya Ryokan. We are proud of our convenient location near Kyoto Station, with easy access to various tourist attractions. Regarding the air conditioning in your room, it was an old floor-mounted type, so it may have been difficult to understand. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. We hope to see you again when you visit Kyoto.

Verified reviewIt's close to Kyoto Train Station. The room is traditional Ryokan.
The Public bath (onsen) was too cold (maybe 38 degrees). The bathroom smelled bad, and when you leave and take the key out, the fan in the Bathroom stops, which is why it smells there, the air doesn't circulate. The whole room had bad aircirculation, which meant my clothes didn't dry at all. The Futon was very thin, thinner than most which can take some getting used to for western travellers. Not a big issue, but usually there is another futon in the closet, so you can just stack two. But there were none. The TV and Air conditioning were at least 25 years old, so basically the TV was just a prop.
Thank you for staying at Wakamiya Ryokan. The temperature in the large public bath is set lower during the summer, so some guests may find it lukewarm. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by insufficient ventilation in the guest rooms. As you pointed out, the guest room facilities were not up to date, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We will take your feedback into consideration and strive to create a better environment.

Verified reviewIt is a retro hotel with a lot of old 1960s-1970s furnishings still intact. An interesting cultural experience to stay here for a couple of nights. The staff were very helpful, the room was spacious, the breakfast was large and high quality. The hotel has a private onsen that was very nice.
Some of the old furnishings were a bit worn-out. I also had a very old air conditioner in my room that took a long time to cool the room and was quite loud. So maybe some facilities could be renovated without losing the historical charm. The room also seemed to have no curtains or way of blocking the light coming in? So I woke up quite early. But maybe I misunderstood how the windows work.
Thank you very much for your stay at Ryokan Wakamiya. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed the services and overall 60/70s vibes of the place. We understand that the air conditioner in your room may have felt a little old and noisy. We will take a look at it. We will continue to strive and provide to our guests a relaxing space.

Verified reviewA memorable experience to stay at this Ryokan! It’s a quick walk from the station with shops and restaurants nearby. The room was cozy with complimentary tea and water.
A little pricey for what’s included, but the location and charm made up for it.

Our hotel is close to Kyoto Station and there are many restaurants in the surrounding area, so we are sure you will be able to find a restaurant that you like. Verified reviewThe staff and the location, as well as the attention to details, like the onsen, the tea set, and the traditional breakfast.
Thank you very much for staying at Ryokan Wakamiya. All of our staff are very happy to receive your kind words. We hope that you will be able to experience the atmosphere of Japan through the tea and Kyoto sweets provided in your room. Also, this time we are providing light meals as a service of Ryokan Wakamiya instead of breakfast. We may not be able to provide this depending on the time of your stay, but we are very happy to hear that you were satisfied. We are honored to have been able to help you with your journey.

Verified reviewGreat receptionist, very helpful ! There’s a onsen in the top floor that you can use mostly all day/night and breakfast every morning, really really close to the main train station !
Thank you for staying at our hotel. Our large public bath is open until late at night, so you can relax and soothe your tired body after a day of sightseeing. Regarding meals, we currently do not offer plans that include dinner and breakfast. Depending on the season of your stay, we may provide light meals. Verified reviewI stayed two nights and it was very convenient for staying close to Kyoto Station. Also I liked the bath as it felt cleaner and more spacious as my owns room bathroom. Sleeping on the floor and having the traditional feeling was great, but the hotel itself is just “old” as in used - which shows at doors, tables etc. however it was clean and quite to stay at. The staff was the most welcoming and hard working people I have met so far on my trip!
Thank you very much for staying at our hotel. We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the large public bath and the Japanese culture of sleeping on futons. Although the building itself is not new, we will continue to strive to make our guests' stay comfortable. We are also very pleased to receive words of praise for the service of our staff. We hope that you will come back to us when you visit Kyoto.

There wasn’t much of an explanation on how I can have a traditional ryokan meal at this location.
Thank you for staying at our hotel. As you mentioned, the lobby was renovated a few years ago and has a modern atmosphere. The guest rooms are designed to allow you to enjoy traditional Japanese style rooms. As you mentioned, we do not currently offer plans that include meals. We will consider selling plans that include meals in the future and strive to ensure that our guests can enjoy dining at our hotel. Thank you very much for your valuable feedback.

Verified reviewAs it was my first experience with this supposedly famous ryokan I found it extremely uncomfortable. I am 1.78cm (5.10) tall and the floor seating opportunity at the table & mattress on the floor was beyond uncomfortable. Since I suffered a sore back . The open bath provided wasn’t worth mentioning. Not for me . Never again .
Thank you very much for staying at our hotel. We have taken your feedback into consideration and have tried to improve the futons, but we sincerely apologize that we did not meet your expectations this time. We will continue to take your feedback seriously and strive to make further improvements.

Verified reviewStaying at this ryokan was an absolutely amazing experience. The staff were warm and welcoming, always ready with a smile and kind assistance. The location was perfect – peaceful yet conveniently close to local sights. The room was beautifully traditional, very comfortable, and the futon and bedding were incredibly cosy. One of the highlights was the bath facility – impeccably clean and so relaxing, a real treat after a day of exploring. A truly memorable stay, and I’d love to return!
