Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

MalaysiaThe owner is exceptionally friendly and helpful. We're a group of 8 adults. The owner picked us up from Nakatsugawa station with 3 cars. One to send our luggage back to the guest house. The other 2 cars brought us to the supermarket to buy ingredients for us to cook our dinner at night. Upon our request, they dropped us at Magome town, and brought our ingredients back to the homestay and arranged nicely in the refrigerator. The next day, the owner again helped us to send our luggage to our next accommodation. The homestay has everything we need. The kitchen is fully equipped. The owner prepared a lot of free food and drinks for us. We also love the outdoor wooden bathtub, outdoor dining area and the hammocks. They have cherry tree too. Must be really beautiful in the spring.

ItalyNothing. It' everything perfect.
Everithing. The house is wonderful: it's modern but with the charme of a traditional house. It's well equipped: there is everyting you may need for eating or for spending a nice evening with family and friends or to do laundry or taking an open air hot bath or relaxing on an amaca (there are three of them). The position is incredible: just on the Nakasendo . The hosts are the real added value: the family is welcoming, kind and they treat you like a king. They organized for us both the dinners: one night they booked in a local izakaya and the other one they organized for us a bento with tempura and soba. We really felt like being at home. In the living room we even found a collection of art-books about ukyo-e that was like the cherry on top.

AustraliaThank you Takumi and Kazuyo for the unique experience of spending 4 days in your beautiful house, in a perfect position so close to the pass and for being so helpful to us, it was a lot of fun. Even though it was very hot at the end of July and we are both 78 years old we very much enjoyed walking to Magome and Tsumago on 3 consecutive days, meeting international people along the way at the tea house. We had a wonderful comfortable house to return to each evening and to relax in whilst watching other walkers passing our door. The 8 course dinner in Magome in our own private room was also a fantastic experience. Shirley and Frank from South Australia.

GermanyNothing. It‘s 11/10. It is not cheap but every single Yen is worth it.
This accomodation is 11/10. It is spacious, beautiful, clean, inspiring and relaxing. It is one of those place that influence the whole trip to the better. To the best. The terrace, the bath tub, the rooms, I don’t even know where to start. It is so good. The host Takumi (and his family) are the most wonderful people ever. He picked up our luggage and drove us to the airport. That is crazy.

Great house right on the Nakasendo trail that combines traditional Japanese feel with modern facilities. The location is a bit out of town, but there is a bus stop right out front and it’s right on the trail. The owners stocked the fridge with both food and drinks (alcohol at a cost) . Great little outdoor area. The owners are close by and come at the call of a button if needed, and as we checked in they showed us around the house and the facilities. The owners were super helpful with bus timetables and directions and know the area very well! Highly recommend this place to stay

United StatesThe only thing that was difficult for us was mattresses. This is true almost universally throughout Japan. If you need a soft mattress to sleep, you might want to reconsider visiting the country as a whole. I like a firm mattress and the beds at this site were great for me. Even the tatami mats were good. My wife needs a soft bed and she hardly slept.
This is an incredible location. The hosts are enthusiastic, the outdoor hot bath was lit. They provide a lot of food and drink options (some for a few) that beats driving to town for groceries. This on the trail to Edo.

AustraliaQuiet, relaxing and very comfortable; hot baths both indoors and outdoors, everything you need to self cater. Takuminojikka and his mum went out of their way to make our stay very comfortable and stress free - picking us up from Tsumagojuku when we missed the last bus, driving us to dinner, driving us to the train station on our departure - I wish we stayed more than 1 night.
The location was perfect - along the Nakasendo Trail

United KingdomThe only improvement I can suggest is making the bed mattress slightly softer as it was very firm, but it was still comfortable.
Absolutely wonderful stay with brilliant hosts who went above and beyond to make my stay as comfortable and stress-free as possible. I was kindly transported between Nakatsugawa Station and Magome-juku, and given helpful directions and the bus timetable to the property, which lies directly along the Nakasendo Trail. Unfortunately, it was raining very heavily during my visit, but the hosts offered to pick me up if I wanted and upon my arrival at the guesthouse they directed me to a hot bath and even dried my clothes for me. They also organised a delicious tempura and soba meal from a local restaurant for dinner, which I highly recommend! The guesthouse is very spacious, clean, and with plenty of amenities (including free soft drinks and snacks), and the hosts are just a call button away (I believe they live across the street). Upon leaving, I was given a personalised letter of gratitude for my stay, which was the cherry on top. I'll definitely be back here when I'm next hiking along the Nakasendo (hopefully in better weather)! 100% recommend.

New ZealandNothing! We loved everything.
The house and the owners were amazing. They took such good care of us going out of their way to help us. Picked us up from the train station and even dropped our bags to Nagiso for us so we didn't need to hike with them. The house was amazing and so well catered. We ordered the dinner bento boxes which were so good and used the Japanese style bath again amazing. Will definitely stay here again and 100% recommend.

The house is extremely modern, and well equipped. The host is super friendly and will go out of his way to make your stay comfortable. He’s also very funny! We really appreciated the help setting up a bbq to host with our friends, taking us to buy the groceries and dropping us off at the start of the walk. We haven’t had hospitality like this anywhere else in Japan so far!

AustraliaBoth the hosts and the house itself made our 2 night stay wonderful. The house is quite new and very well equipped: a mix of traditional Japanese style and Western convenience. It's right on the walking trail between Magome and Tsumago, with a lovely private outlook at the rear. We particularly loved the hot-tub (prepared for us by the hosts on both days) and hammock. As advertised, there are 2 single beds in one room and a number of futons in another. The host family (who live nearby) take much joy and pride in welcoming visitors to their guest house and neighbourhood. When we arrived they took time to show us around the house, ensure we had everything we needed, and help us figure out how to tackle the Magome - Tsumago walk the following day. They suggested, and ordered for us, delicious bento boxes for our first night's meal. Then, they gave us space to relax and soak up the peaceful surroundings. They live nearby, but did not intrude. Their caring spirit and generosity was evident in so many little touches around the house, including the stock of pantry and fridge staples: bread, biscuits, fruit, coffee, butter and more. There are no shops/supermarkets nearby, so it is worth coming prepared (although the hosts offered to take us to a supermarket if we needed). This was the only house we stayed in during our nearly 3 weeks in Japan; all our other accommodations were either Western hotel rooms or Japanese onsens. It was bliss to have space, a washing machine and a kitchen, and we will long remember the beautiful hospitality of the host family.

I am so happy we booked this guest house. Takumi and his parents were exceptional hosts. Japan is known for its hospitality, but this family takes it to another level. The house is very spacious and the host have placed so much thought into making your stay comfortable. They’ve stocked the fridge with drinks, coffee, and tea. They provide delicious Japanese snacks and milk and bread and banana for breakfast. The house has been renovated with high-quality material. Its location is fantastic, right on the Nakasendo trail. In the morning, you can enjoy a cup of coffee, soak in the open air hot tub, step right outside the door and start walking on the Nakasendo trail. Do not be worried about its location being outside of Magome. There are only 2 places open for dinner in Magome and the hosts provided roundtrip shuttle service to a dinner at Haginoya. They go above and beyond to make sure that your experience is comfortable, relaxing, and rejuvenating. For our second night, we stayed in Kiso Fukushima. If I could plan it all over again, we would have made Takumi‘s guesthouse our homebase, and done daytrips for the various sections of the Nakasendo trail. This would free you up from having to carry your luggage and have a really comfortable place to come back to every day.

United StatesEverything was great! I wish we could have stayed longer!
The house is beautifully appointed and located right along the Nakasendo Trail. This made it very easy to walk to Magome and check out the town after we checked in. Our hosts were lovely and set up a grill in the yard for us to use. We went to a supermarket before checking in and grilling on the Nakasendo trail was a highlight of our trip. We woke up early and started hiking towards Tsumago directly from our front door.

Beautiful new home in a fantastic location with amazing hosts! They are so friendly and helpful and made this our favorite stop in Japan. The house is so peaceful and they have thought of every thing you will need, from snacks, to outdoor amenities, to breakfast and so much more. The shower is phenomenal! The hosts arranged great bento boxes to eat at home—-so fun to eat in the traditional dining room. The host drove us to drop off our car at the other end of the trail and took special care of my elderly father, from heating up the wood fired tub, checking on him while we hiked, and making special late check out arrangements. We all wished we spent more days in this house. It’s such a fun break coming from Tokyo. The vibes of this house and host are notable!

ItalyWe came to Magome to walk the Nakasendo trail and our experience has been amazing from start to finish. The owners were wonderful and super helpful with everything. They came to pick us up at the station and even offered to drive us to the starting point of the trail as it was too late to take the bus. After finishing the walk we were welcomed by a cozy bento dinner in the beautiful traditional dining room of the house, as well as a warm bath. I highly recommend staying at this accommodation!

BelgiumEverything was good!
When we arrived at the gare station a man (the son of the family) welcomed us warmly. He kindly drove us to a supermarket to buy some useful items (food, etc) for our staying and he would already send to our airbnb. Then he dropped us at the beginning of Magome path to be able to enjoy the walk to the house. When we arrived to the house, the mother and son showed us the house with all the explanations of use. They gently asked us which kind of restaurant we would have liked to go dinner. We were surprised the price of our stay included all the car transport. The family host was alaways available if we had an emergency. We were never in no need, food and drinks were full in the kitchen. We enjoyed the house to the fullest: comfortable beds, nice bathroom, the landscape was peaceful. All the rooms of this house were well presented with all the accomodations. The living room with the tatami mats was incredible with many toys, books. The decoration is authentic. There is a smoking area aoutside with an ashtray. Until the last day the father of the family drove us back to the gare station. We have so much great memories of this place along the Nakasendo road.

AustraliaThere was nothing at all to not like about the property or our stay.
Wonderful location on the nakasendo road. A very well equipped kitchen and the inside and outside hammocks we loved. My son particularly enjoyed the outside hot tub. There’s a washing machine too so we could freshen up our clothing enroute. The hosts were so very generous and kind. Nothing was too much trouble for these lovely people. We were picked up at magome bus station 1 and dropped into Tsumago the next morning. Communication was very easy via google translation and we appreciated the good sense of humour.
