How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Verified reviewThe Sangen fulfilled our hopes of a traditional stay including a beautiful Japenese breakfast prepared by Eddy. All staff were very polite and helpful. The room was fantastic and the view from the rooftop terrace spectacular. Great location for taking in Gion and all it's magic. Thank you very much to all at Sangen for our fantastic 2 night stay.

Verified reviewThe staff were all so lovely! The soft cushy futon beds were so comfortable. It worked perfectly for a family of four to be able to stay together. There is a great rooftop patio with wonderful views that we enjoyed our coffee on every morning. The breakfast was great. Reserve the tub for a soak.
When I booked the property on Booking.com, I selected and paid extra for “with breakfast”, but when you get there, the staff charges an extra 1500 yen per person per day for the breakfast. I think this is more of an error with booking.com rather than the hotel. The same thing happened to some other guests that we spoke to.

Verified reviewIts location was phenomenal! Comfortable and very home like, so it would be amazing for those who get a little homesick and need a home away from home. The staff were exceptional, so kind and extremely helpful. Truly the loveliest people!!! Especially the young man and woman who worked on June 26th! Both so lovely and helpful. Carried out luggage to the street, got us water bottles whilst we waited for our uber to the train station as it was very very hot and the young man even went as far as running all the way down the street to our uber driver who was lost and drove back to the home stay with her in order to get her directly to us! He also then after all of that put our luggage in the car! Truly they both went above and beyond and were such kind hearted and warm people. Both deserve a raise!!!!! We would’ve loved to give them a gift to show our gratitude if we had the time. We will definitely be returning for our next stay in Kyoto!
I didn’t love the mattresses used for sleeping as they didn’t really support me as a side sleeper but I think that just comes with the experience and honestly even with that I loved my stay.

Verified reviewWe absolutely loved staying at this beautiful Ryokan. The property is located in a very good location, near many temples and shops. The host, Kazuki, is a lovely person, very kind and helpful. He prepared a delicious typical Japanese breakfast.

Verified reviewLooks small from outside but it's perfect! Nice, quiet and cozy. Amazing and very friendly staff! They also speak very good English overall as well so don't feel too embarrassed when talking with them. Traditional style of breakfast is made in-house (of course with additional cost), and you can come and go whenever (did a day-trip to Nara and came back late with no hassle). Lastly, location is great as it is a few minutes of a walk away from multiple landmarks. Keep up the great work!

Verified review- lovely Gion area - nice view - bedding is super comfortable - amazing water pressure and good bathroom - breakfast was very affordable and delicious - very close to temples and maikoyas - staff was lovely
However, this room did not meet my expectations as I paid 220 euros (and usually the room is double the price) so for that price, I find it too expensive for the experience - VERY expensive - no onsen - area is nice but very crowded when you arrive with your cabin luggage and the taxi could not reach us in front of the hotel, we had to walk to a different street to be picked up - no many restaurants nearby, you'll have to walk a bit at night to find a restaurant (but lovely area so it's ok)

Regarding the cost, of course we know that it is more expensive than usual, we must work harder in order to make your stay best.
