How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewFantastic traditional ryokan near Shimoda! If you want to experience traditional Japanese ryokan vibes, this place is for you. Would definitely stay here again. I loved my stay - so calm and peaceful. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. It has a lovely onsen (both for women and men) which is open late at night, a huge pool which is great for families. The room was extremely neat, and the interior was designed in a traditional Japanese style. The WC was in the room and public showers in onsen, as well as one private onsen with a shower that can be used at night for free (everything super neat). Just keep in mind that this ryokan is slightly out of Shimoda - if you are travelling from Shimoda you have to take a taxi from the train station (around EUR 8-9 one way) or rent a bike. There are some local buses that go to Rendaiji as well. They have a couple of e-bikes on site for rent, however, as I understood, there is a regulation (applied everywhere) that you have to come back with a bike by 5 pm. Rendaiji train station is around 10 min away on foot, or they organise shuttles - thus a great location if you want to explore Izu peninsula more. Note that if you do not take dinner on site, there are not many dinner options nearby, you either have to go to Shimoda or to 7/11 (around 10 min on foot from the property).
Not the hotel's fault, but I booked a massage, and it was of very poor quality and quite pricey.

Verified reviewThe staff was phenomenal. They help you bring in your luggage when checking in and carry your luggage out when checking out. They offer a shuttle service on the day of your check-out either to Rendaiji station or to Shimoda station. Even if you don't take the shuttle service, it's about a 10-minute walk from Rendaiji station, so it's not too bad. Each day of my stay, staff at the front desk would also give us little snacks each time we returned to the inn. It was cute and frankly quite nice. When leaving for the day to visit places like Shimoda, Kawazu, or other areas, you need to turn your key in at the front desk so that they can keep track of when you leave and return for the day. They also said it's so guests don't lose their room key while out and about, which makes 100% sense. The onsens were soothing and healing. I unfortunately didn't pack a swimsuit, so I couldn't use the garden area, which had a swimming pool and multiple saunas, but that's not something that worried me too much. I did hear from other guests that the pools were heated, which I find to be a good thing in case you have kids that wanna swim in the pool during winter.
I didn't understand how breakfast and dinner worked at this place. I was pretty sure I booked my stay to have breakfast and dinner, but the staff had kept telling me that both were already fully booked and they kept apologizing, saying that I couldn't have breakfast or dinner. I ultimately ended up eating convenient store food for breakfast and dinner a majority of the time with my friends, which wasn't too pleasing. Another other downside was that there's no laundry, so make sure to either pack enough clothes, or do laundry before arriving. There is coin laundry services, but they're about 15-20 minutes away by walking, so it's a bit hard and uncomfortable to do travel just to clean your clothes. Finally, not relating to the inn, but everything around it closes around 7 p.m, so if you're out late and want to eat dinner, you're either going to need an early dinner or eat somewhere else before returning (unless you do somehow get the dinner plan at the inn).

Verified reviewThis was a fairly, though not overly traditional ryokan that has exceptional pool, sauna and onsen facilities. Considering the price, you get way more than you pay for. The staff are extremely courteous and attentive.
Didn't actively dislike anything.

Verified reviewBeautiful ryokan in the small town of Shimoda. The pool, sauna, and onsen were so worth it and made our stay extremely relaxing.
We discovered that breakfast and dinner were a part of the experience at the ryokan. We inquired if we could have for the following night of our two night stay but they said we had to book these experiences in advance. Totally understand but a little more flexibility could be nice!

Verified reviewThe pool, sauna, and onsen facilities were amazing. Rooms were nice and in Japanese style.
The wing we were in was a bit tired. The hotel did not provide many food and beverage services and there was not much in walking distance.

Verified reviewa traditional ryokan which ticked all the boxes.
They wouldn't let us order dinner even though we requested it weeks ahead . i guess they have experience of their traditional food not appealing to Western tastes.
