Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesI didn't understand how breakfast and dinner worked at this place. I was pretty sure I booked my stay to have breakfast and dinner, but the staff had kept telling me that both were already fully booked and they kept apologizing, saying that I couldn't have breakfast or dinner. I ultimately ended up eating convenient store food for breakfast and dinner a majority of the time with my friends, which wasn't too pleasing. Another other downside was that there's no laundry, so make sure to either pack enough clothes, or do laundry before arriving. There is coin laundry services, but they're about 15-20 minutes away by walking, so it's a bit hard and uncomfortable to do travel just to clean your clothes. Finally, not relating to the inn, but everything around it closes around 7 p.m, so if you're out late and want to eat dinner, you're either going to need an early dinner or eat somewhere else before returning (unless you do somehow get the dinner plan at the inn).
The staff was phenomenal. They help you bring in your luggage when checking in and carry your luggage out when checking out. They offer a shuttle service on the day of your check-out either to Rendaiji station or to Shimoda station. Even if you don't take the shuttle service, it's about a 10-minute walk from Rendaiji station, so it's not too bad. Each day of my stay, staff at the front desk would also give us little snacks each time we returned to the inn. It was cute and frankly quite nice. When leaving for the day to visit places like Shimoda, Kawazu, or other areas, you need to turn your key in at the front desk so that they can keep track of when you leave and return for the day. They also said it's so guests don't lose their room key while out and about, which makes 100% sense. The onsens were soothing and healing. I unfortunately didn't pack a swimsuit, so I couldn't use the garden area, which had a swimming pool and multiple saunas, but that's not something that worried me too much. I did hear from other guests that the pools were heated, which I find to be a good thing in case you have kids that wanna swim in the pool during winter.

United StatesDidn't actively dislike anything.
This was a fairly, though not overly traditional ryokan that has exceptional pool, sauna and onsen facilities. Considering the price, you get way more than you pay for. The staff are extremely courteous and attentive.

JapanWe discovered that breakfast and dinner were a part of the experience at the ryokan. We inquired if we could have for the following night of our two night stay but they said we had to book these experiences in advance. Totally understand but a little more flexibility could be nice!
Beautiful ryokan in the small town of Shimoda. The pool, sauna, and onsen were so worth it and made our stay extremely relaxing.

JapanThe bathroom was a bit cold, but we were there in February, and we understand that is normal for Japan... Actually, speaking of the bathroom, the room we had had a bathtub that received hot spring water, which was pretty amazing.
From the moment we arrived, we realized this place was better than what we had expected from the photos. It felt very old-world Japan. It was dignified, polite, sprawling, and comfortable. The onsen were excellent, the gardens were nice to walk through, and staff were very courteous and helpful. We hope to go back.

South AfricaWe had a room only package and food was not included. We did ask if we could add food, however they appeared to be at capacity for food servings so it could not be included. It would have been nice to include food to add to the experience, however it did not detract from the overall enjoyment as we found great restaurants in Shimoda town.
This felt like a very traditional Japanese experience without being intimidating. The facilities were excellent and although it was winter, we made use of everything including the outside pool.

Our stay was fantastic! The staff was incredibly friendly and professional, making us feel right at home. Our room was huge, complete with our very own private onsen, and the facilities truly left us impressed. We couldn't get enough of the Finnish sauna! We'll be back for another visit.

This is a beautiful hotel, I had an awesome, super large room with a private bath that I used daily. My room had a river view with tranquil flowing water sounds and forested hills, very beautiful. The staff were super nice and friendly. Tons of spa and pool facilities. Super close to rendaiji station.

Everything! Location- easy to find, close to town centre of Shimoda (we were driving) Facilities- it has indoor onsen/public baths , both open and closed. I enjoyed viewing the full cherry blossom tree from the indoor open bath which was a bonus. There’re also outdoor swimming spa and sauna which we didn’t get to use, but they look amazing. Rooms - we stayed at the first floor ryokan. the room was immaculately housekept, has a private bath in the bathroom. Very clean. Housekeeping was excellent, providing the usual excellent Japanese hospitality. Staff - very courteous and making their effort to help even though they speak minimum English.
