Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Czech RepublicWe had wonderfull time in Gableview Forest Inn.Elisabeth and her husband took great care of us,way beyond the regular service. We received bunch of recommendations for the trips around and they were even driving us to the bus stop in the centre. The place has very special atmosphere, with three onsens-as we were the only guests at the time of our visit, they were at full disposal only for us. Definetely recommend!

AustraliaElizabeth was an amazing host and went out of her way to assist with activity planning and local pick up and drop offs. The dinners and breakfasts by Satoshi were absolutely superb. Really good value for money. Very happy with our stay, highly recommended.

United StatesBeing a few miles out of town did not bother us because we had a rental car, but you will want to address transportation to the inn if you arrive by train or bus. We had planned ahead to carry only small duffels and day packs into the inn because our room was on the second floor; it would have been a challenge to carry our large luggage up the stairs.
The hosts are the best reason to stay at the Gableview Forest Inn, they take their role as innkeepers seriously and their focus is on ensuring their guests have the best possible experience. My wife and I were traveling with our adult daughter so traditional onsen and traditional food were things she had concerns about that impacted our choice. The private onsen options and the choice of a western breakfast, not to mention the room with the cool loft, made this inn a perfect choice for us. The room was beautiful, very clean, and had everything we needed. We only wished the snow monkeys that often visit outside the window had appeared, but even the possibility was exciting. The Chinese restaurant down the street the hosts recommended is exceptional, and the hosts had other local knowledge that was very helpful. We would definitely stay here again, and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the personal attention of good innkeepers.

AustraliaWe liked it all and would highly recommend this place to stay if you want a more homely personal experience.
The hosts are amazing. Elizabeth can give you all the local knowledge of places to visit. We had a car so it was easy to get around. I would recommend hiring a car to easily get to the accommodation and also to see more around Nikko. (There are so many amazing places to visit). There are car hire places right near the station and you can easily park at the inn. The forest surrounding the inn is lovely and the onsens are beautiful, especially the outdoor one with the forest view. The meals offered by the hosts are beautiful and worth ordering. The Chinese restaurant which is within walking distance (an incline on the way back though) is also delicious, probably the best Chinese food we've ever had. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. The hosts went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay and time in Nikko.

United KingdomWe have no complaints.
We were warmly welcomed by our hosts, who went the extra mile to ensure we were comfortable and to provide us with an itinerary for our brief stay in Nikko. They kindly drove us to the shrines and collected us afterwards. The food was exceptional. We also enjoyed using the outdoor onsen, as we could be in the forest. Highly recommended!

United KingdomNothing - but taxis in Nikko were thin on the ground so getting to and fro could be time consuming.
Elizabeth was a wonderful host and made our stay very enjoyable. The dinner that Satoshi made for us was delicious and a great start to our travels in Japan. Nikko and the surrounding area is beautiful and a trip to Chuzenji Lake is worth doing and the walk around the lake to the summer Residencies of the European embassies. At one night at a delicious small sushi restaurant near to the JR Station. Finally Onsens at the Guest house were the favourite ones I experienced. Nikko was a highlight of our trip.

AustraliaBed smaller than expected. Shower not walk in.
Breakfast every day was fresh fruit, eggs etc. All V.good. 2 dinners were exceptional! Good value. We had a sitting room - very comfortable and bedroom (slightly smaller bed than at home). Quiet, looking out into the forest was relaxing. Hosts friendly and helpful. Take your walking shoes.

United StatesThe breakfast was great and the chef adapted the meal to my dietary needs. The dinner served was exceptional. And the presentation of both meals very pleasing. And they play great music! The location is uphill from the town and they were very kind to transport travelers down to the station and to get meals. Elizabeth helps travelers to plan the best timing for site seeing the wonders of the area and is a great story teller.

United KingdomA vegetarian dinner option would have been nice to experience, but Liz found us lots of options for places to eat out instead.
After a couple of weeks in the cities the hosts made this feel like home for us, and what a beautiful setting! Near to Nikko centre, and Liz was so generous giving us a lift when needed and making sure we had an itinerary to see everything by bus. Homecooked breakfast was delicious too! And the onsen was a lovely bonus.

AustraliaThe language used in their email communications with us was not in keeping with what actually happened when we arrived. Most of the emails we received used language that was very stern and authoritarian e.g. you must provide a copy of your passport before you arrive or we will cancel your booking. Not necessary especially when we had fully paid for our stay. Thankfully, the Hosts were extremely welcoming and understanding.
The Hosts were very friendly, very helpful and provided us with transport to the Station with plenty of information about places to see and things to do. We felt very welcome.

United StatesI can’t think of anything I disliked.
I really enjoyed my stay at the Gableview Inn. The room was very spacious. It was equipped with everything you would need to be comfortable, The hosts made sure I had perfect directions to the places I was visiting. This was extremely helpful. I appreciated their kindness in giving me a ride daily to the places I visited since their inn wasn’t in the downtown area. I chose to have breakfast there. Everything that was prepared was delicious

JapanThis is not a complaint, merely a suggestion from 2 of the older people in our group. Since the wonderful dinner that Satoshi cooks all by himself has so many courses, it might be nice to have the explanations written out on a little card for each diner. That way, everything stays nice and hot :)
This was our second time staying at the inn. Of course, the owners, Satoshi and Elizabeth remembered us and were just as friendly and helpful as our first visit 2 years ago. Satoshi remembered that we weren’t able to find a soba restaurant open on New Year’s day the first time and did research to find one for us. I was so touched by his kindness. There is a new lovely shared bathroom and many new interior design pieces. I’m still in love with the open air bath that can be reserved. It’s such a relaxing, friendly inn with lovely owners. I highly recommend it.

GreeceThe hosts are both amazing!! Very friendly and eager to help us with everything we needed. We had not chosen to have diner there (bad decision because I believe it must have been amazing) and they suggested to make a reservation for us at an excellent restaurant nearby. The breakfast was served in a very cosy and homey feeling living room and it was a classical western style with eggs, bagels etc which was exceptional! I have nothing but wonderful words to say about this experience. Totally recommended! I would like to revisit and spend more time there. Thank you for everything
