Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsWe stayed in a traditional room, which was spacious and comfortable. The private onsen is easy to reserve and you can go there without leaving the building. Although there is no staff, the check in process was quite easy.

AustraliaRoom was nice and clean and cosy with a little table plus seats and rolled up mats for the beds. There are two private onsens at the hotel which are available to book. They also provide the key and authentic getup of robes and sandals so you can look the part when you visit all 9 local onsens to secure good health and fortune. There is no staff available onsite to assist with check in, which is done via a computer and locked box system. The system didn’t work when I tried to check in and I had to call up someone for assistance. The place is situated less than 50 metres to the nearest bus stop to take you into Yudanaka station, the snow monkeys or onto the mountains of Shiga Kogen. Limited convenience stores availability nearby so load up in Yudanaka before you arrive. There is a few cute little mom and pop restaurants, cafes and bars nearby where you will be well taken care of.

United StatesNo on-site staff, and the check-in by computer didn't work. Fortunately staff were available by phone, so it only caused a delay.

Quaint, characterful, traditional ryoken. Two private onsens and an underground passageway to a charming bar and public onsens.

AustraliaCheck in isn’t until 4pm and it is self check in which didn’t work-no QR code sent from booking.com, and it didn’t recognise my phone number. Quite distressing when it’s getting dark and it’s -1 outside. The maps for restaurants were very difficult to read and hopelessly out of date - and in this village you really need to know where the restaurants are!
Two private onsen were a bonus. Local bus stop right out front.

AustraliaThere were no staff so our room didn’t get cleaned and the check in was a little confusing, when you get there you need to use your phone number if it doesn’t work.
They had a private onsen that we would book out a time slot each day. They gave us the key to the town’s onsens. Right next to a bus stop too.

I loved that we get to book our private onsen, and they provided key to 9 public onsen! Right by bus stop. Loved wearing the traditional Japanese clothing.

NetherlandsWell... I understand the hotel is a bit old, I can get past that. What annoyed me is that it said we would get fresh towels daily, and our towels weren't changed. With using the onsens, this would have been nice. Our bins weren't emptied either. Considering there arent many restaurant options in Shibu Onsen and the hotel doesn't serve food, we mostly had take out in our room. The bins are tiny and trash piled up quickly. Since there is no staff available, there wasn't anyone to ask for these two things (we tried the designated phone downstairs once, but no one picked up). I also do think this should just be provided in a daily room clean. It is a small effort that makes a big difference. Other than that lots of loud buzzing from air vents and such, quite noisy for sleeping. I stayed in ho(s)tels which were way better value for money.
The room was clean and cozy even though it was old. The smaller onsen is quite nice. The hotel has a lot of potential to be really good. It is conveniently close to the snow monkeys and gives good acces to skiing as well.

ItalyBasically there is no staff, so you don’t get support unless you call a phone number. This means that check-in time is strict, which isn’t always a good thing.
Classic Ryokan with a reasonable price in Shibu Onsen. It features 2 private onsen that you can book during your stay. In the room you will find the yutaka and keys for visiting the 9 public onsen of the village. The tunnel connecting the hotel with their bar is charming.

AustraliaWe really liked that there were 2 onsens that could be privately booked for free as part of the hotel stay. The hotel also give you a key to access all 9 onsens in the onsen town and is located with very close proximity to these. It was also really cool accessing the private onsens through an underground passage way and this also led to the main street and a small bar. The beds were comfortable and the room was spacious with an area to pack the bedding away into and also the suitcases.

Lovely cozy, warm and inviting. Being able to leave our bags at reception while we went to check out the snow monkeys👌. Also the staff at the standing bar were awesome. Wagyu skewers washed down with a local Shiga Kogen ale was delicious. Relaxing in the various Onsens around the town is great as well as using the private one at Kadoya.
