We stayed in a traditional room, which was spacious and comfortable. The private onsen is easy to reserve and you can go there without leaving the building. Although there is no staff, the check in process was quite easy.

Prime location in this small village with underground tunnel connecting to the community Onsens. Very old building but in great shape for what it is. Staff is available 24/7 if needed.

No staff directly on site (but available 24/7 if needed)

Like the authority of the place, disliked the stairs as had to lug 2 suitcases up 2 floors no lift. No showers in the room.

Room was nice and clean and cosy with a little table plus seats and rolled up mats for the beds. There are two private onsens at the hotel which are available to book. They also provide the key and authentic getup of robes and sandals so you can look the part when you visit all 9 local onsens to secure good health and fortune. There is no staff available onsite to assist with check in, which is done via a computer and locked box system. The system didn’t work when I tried to check in and I had to call up someone for assistance. The place is situated less than 50 metres to the nearest bus stop to take you into Yudanaka station, the snow monkeys or onto the mountains of Shiga Kogen. Limited convenience stores availability nearby so load up in Yudanaka before you arrive. There is a few cute little mom and pop restaurants, cafes and bars nearby where you will be well taken care of.

Good location with easy access to hot springs and the bus.

No on-site staff, and the check-in by computer didn't work. Fortunately staff were available by phone, so it only caused a delay.

Only steps away from the bus stop for yudanaka train station and the snow money park. Very easy check-in using a touch screen with easy instructions to follow. Check in isn’t until 4pm but you can leave your luggage in the lobby area beforehand and go explore. We loved the tatami-style room and futons. Be aware there is 1-2 flights of stairs to take your luggage up. It snowed on our second day and we were cosy in our room with the provided heater and blankets. There is an efficient system for requesting clean towels, bathroom cleaning, and trash removal. Our room had a toilet, no shower but you can reserve the private onsens for bathing (we never had an issue reserving for our preferred time). The private onsens were unique - water temperature was quite variable but manageable. A baby bath was provided in both onsens which was perfect for our 10 month old baby (2/3 nights the onsen was an ok temperature for the baby to bathe in but we used the baby bath when it was too hot and mixed in cold water) We shared our futons with the baby (we usually bed share so not an issue for us, no extra charge for this). The room and bathroom was quite a tight fit but totally fine and had storage space for our big suitcase and baby carrier. the key for the 9 public onsens was provided in our room on check-in and had yukata outfits provided (including 1 for the baby!) - this was so much fun (note that the public onsens in the town aren’t really suitable for babies but we just took turns visiting them). It would have been nice to have some staff on site to ask questions/recommendations for food etc, but oh well we managed (be aware the maps and food info provided in the room is a little out of date)

Quaint, characterful, traditional ryoken. Two private onsens and an underground passageway to a charming bar and public onsens.

The self check in was not working. However, there is a phone to call staff who addressed the issue immediately.

Two private onsen were a bonus. Local bus stop right out front.

Check in isn’t until 4pm and it is self check in which didn’t work-no QR code sent from booking.com, and it didn’t recognise my phone number. Quite distressing when it’s getting dark and it’s -1 outside. The maps for restaurants were very difficult to read and hopelessly out of date - and in this village you really need to know where the restaurants are!

Very central to Shibu Onsen. Easy to get to by bus.

Self-check in was not working. Had multiple people standing around wanting to check in. The private onsen were pretty average in comparison to other hotels on the street.
