How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGood location, very clean, kind staff, wonderful neighborhood, very quiet at night, very reasonable rate.
This is more general advice for staying in Honmura: plan ahead for meals, especially dinner on Tuesdays as it can a challenge to find an eatery that is open for business, and it’s difficult to fully enjoy travel when the meeting of basic needs is uncertain. More things to plan for: buses require exact change and are infrequent.

Verified reviewThe location is great, the room is spacious and there's a good view from the window. It was also an experience of staying in a traditional Japanese house.
Generally, the space wasn't really clean and smelled not very good; some facilities would need renovation. There are also cockroaches in the kitchen. The concept is rather one-night stay I guess, because it's actually relatively hard to have one shared toilet and one shower for 5+ people (wich by the way you can only use from 5 AM to 9 AM and from 14 PM to 22 PM). Also it would be great if the kitchen had at least some utensils like forks or a knife, I only survived because I had mine.
Thank you for your stay. Our guesthouse is a renovated traditional Japanese wooden house over 50 years old. It is surrounded by the sea and rich nature. No matter what measures are taken, it is impossible to completely prevent insects from entering. As this is a guesthouse, in the shared kitchen, other guests may eat instant foods or convenience store meals. We pay the utmost attention to cleanliness and clean daily, but it is not possible to fully prevent odors. Our guesthouse is the most affordable option on the island that offers private rooms. At other guesthouses, the minimum cost is over 10,000 yen per night, and accommodations on Naoshima are expensive. If you expect a higher standard of comfort, you should choose accommodations costing over 20,000 yen per night. Even then, in this natural environment, insects cannot be completely avoided. If you are not suited to staying in the countryside, then you should not choose this kind of environment in the first place. Thank you.

Verified reviewTraditional property . A great old home. They kept my luggage before and after check in. They had a great V and GF cafe across the road with amazing food
Lack of human touch. No movement around the house. Had a lot of privacy though but no one to interact with as a solo traveler

Verified review(Please note I speak Japanese) The staff are wonderfully kind and accommodating. We had no issues checking in/dropping our bags off early (very helpful due to the ferry schedule), and he went out of his way to give us recommendations for places to eat, even helping us make a reservation (which likely wasn't strictly needed, but we were very grateful nonetheless). They also provide a simple, hearty breakfast in the morning. The facilities are just what you expect from a guest house, which did mean sharing one bathroom and shower among all the guests––which was not a problem. The location was also fairly convenient for our needs: it's right off of a bus stop and is a very short walk to the Honmura port (from which we took an early commuter ferry back to Uno; note that we did enter Naoshima and leave for a day trip to Teshima via the Miyanoura port, which was a short bus ride or ~30 minute walk away). Overall, especially considering the limitations of staying on an island, we were pleased with this stay!
If you're looking for a luxury experience, this may not align with your expectations. It's a quintessential island/rustic guest house experience that worked great on a budget.

Verified reviewVery close to Honmura Port and various art house projects. Staff is kind and helpful, and the breakfast is a proper meal (albeit the same every day).
The house is quite old and seemingly in need of a good renovation. There’s only one bathroom and one toilet on the lower floor which is rather inconvenient if you’re on the upper floor and could cause some waiting time in high seasons.

Verified reviewThis accomodation was exceptionally cheap and therefore so worth our money. The breakfast was as tasty and made you full which is perfect when wanting to use your whole day for exploring the museums on Naoshima. The host was friendly and even brought me some extra futons, when I asked for some. The location is amazing and right next to several of the art houses. You can also reach Chichu within 10 minutes by bike. The room was also quite spacious, even had a small TV.
The host was very difficult to reach. Unfortunately they didn't take our phone calls and only sometimes replied to messages. The bathroom has a problem with mold.

Verified reviewRoom was comfy, good size, but there is a time we are allowed to shower, and can be an issue. The location is good, check in was easy, but to find the place was so so, because the name is not too visible. Was worth it.

Breakfast was included. But you need to book /reserve this the day before. This was not explained to us on checking in. Only saw contact email on small sign on shelf on last day.
Hello, thank you very much for your stay with us. Regarding breakfast, when making a reservation, you can choose either a room-only plan or a plan that includes breakfast. We would greatly appreciate it if you could kindly check this when you make your booking. Thank you again, and best regards.

Verified reviewThe location is right in the heart of Honmura Port Village, close to the bus stop and various restaurants. The house is quite old, but the bedroom was clean and acceptable. We got a corner room with windows on two sides — bright and very comfortable. The price was reasonable and not expensive. The restaurant, which seems to be part of the ryokan, is located across the street and serves good-quality set lunch meals, though the price might be slightly on the higher side.
Since the house is quite old, the facilities and bathroom may look a bit dated and not very convenient, but it’s not terrible. The staff didn’t seem very welcoming, which might be due to language barriers as their English wasn’t very strong. The staircase is also quite steep, so it might be inconvenient if you have heavy luggage.

Verified reviewLoved everything about this guesthouse. My room was warm and smelled nice! The owner made sure I was comfortable and had anything I needed. They have a restaurant as well and he made me a gluten free lunch and dinner that were delicious. Couldn’t recommend more!
