Great place, very quiet. Super close to a beautiful traditional district. The host was absolutely wonderful, lots of local knowledge and great tips on where to go, what to see. Breakfast was absolutely delicious.

The host was lovely, very social. Good at English too as he is originally from Canada. We got free canadian breakfast and lots of recommendations for things in the area. He offered lots of folders and maps too. Very kind! And the showers were AMAZING! Very refreshing.

The location is fantastic. The bed and breakfast is located in a nice neighbourhood and very close to the beach. It is walking distance to several restaraunt / food options. The host is friendly and the rooms are clean and comfortable. It was a very pleasant stay. We were a little early in the season for the firefly squid, but we ventured out around 2am and the walk to the beach was well lit and very safe-feeling.

The property was rather cold: air conditioning made our room warm (after a while), but corridors and bathroom were cold. It was fine for us because we are used to living in Japan, but it could be annoying for a foreigner.

The owner was very kind and welcoming. He entertained us with some chats and prepared coffee for us even if we left very early in the morning! The room was cozy and rather large for Japanese standards.

Shirokuma Inn - A Hidden Gem in Toyama

As a con, the town might not be for everyone. It's quiet and off the beaten path, but for us, that was exactly what made it special.

Our stay at Shirokuma Inn was a truly memorable experience. The value for money is incredible, especially considering the unique atmosphere of the family room with a garden view. It felt like staying in an authentic Ryokan, offering a peaceful retreat with a touch of traditional Japan. The location is excellent. Just a 15-minute walk to the beach and 10 minutes to a Family Mart, with local restaurants nearby. The town itself is sparsely populated but incredibly charming. The center has preserved the authentic beauty of an old fishing village, which adds to its appeal. For those with a refined palate, there are one or two Michelin-starred restaurants in the area, though we opted for more casual but equally authentic local cuisine, which did not disappoint. The breakfast offered by the host was Western-style, featuring eggs, bacon, bread, and coffee, and it was delicious. The hosts, a wonderful Japanese-Canadian couple, are iconic. Communication was seamless for us as Europeans, making the stay even more enjoyable. One of the highlights of our trip was the nearby Iwasehama beach, which offers stunning sunsets. There's even a bar on the beach where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sun go down—an unforgettable experience.

Really up to your next door. Feel some uncomfortable with the other guests who always complainning of the voice and light. We tried our best possible to keep quiet and not turning on the light unnecessarily. But this is more like home stay not a hotel. We all should accept and respect our choices of stay. And the breakfast need to be done in 30 minutes, since there are queue for the next guest. No problem if you can eat quick.

Homey place. A heritage street nearby. The check in is easy.

Well I booked without realising it is a ryokan. (It calls itself an inn, in English.) Ryokan is great in principle but our bodies are getting a little aged for the low, hard bed. We also missed that the facilities are shared, which we prefer not to tolerate nowadays. Seemed to be no obvious place to shave or clean teeth. The nearby beach is ok, the sunset pleasant and the village interesting but Aussies should not expect a beach of the average Australian calibre.

Quiet, friendly host, very good breakfast. Pleasant atmosphere. Owner is Canadian so easier to converse for us. Not expensive. Small so only a few guests. Easy tram ride from Toyama station.

I suggest you opt for an upstairs room. The walls offer little noise insulation and the downstairs room is next to the kitchen/dining area so if breakfast prep starts early, as it did with us, it’s an unwelcome wake up call.

The property was pleasant with the host being friendly and informative. Great western style breakfast. It’s a 5 minute walk from the tram stop, 15-20 minutes to the beach and right near the main historic street. It’s a nice place to stay for a night in a quiet little town.

The hosts were incredibly nice. I loved our breakfast time with them and the fun conversations. Iwase is beautiful and I highly recommend spending plenty of time in the surrounding area. It is such a gem. This inn is easy to get to via Toyama tram. It's about a 30 min trip from the station including a short walk. Thank you so much. We hope to see you again soon!

It was the classic “bed and breakfast” experience that you read about, but hardly ever have. The friendly hosts not only served a great breakfast, but were attentive to every aspect of the experience.
