We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. United StatesNothing! Everything was absolutely amazing!!
Shokinkan is a truly magical place operated by incredible people. Nestled in a gorgeous, ancient temple complex, the grounds are extremely fun to hike/explore during the day, with plenty of opportunities to learn about the history of the place through thoughtful signage and the wonderful staff. The food was absolutely delicious - we were eating a feast of unique foods specially prepared for us every evening and morning, which made the experience epic. Okami-san and everyone else here gregariously welcomed us with cups of beautiful matcha, and even shuttled us to and from Yasugi station and to the Adachi Museum of Art. I will never forget this place!

AustraliaBeautiful location in the forest. Quiet , room was big & had a lovely internal balcony at tree level. We had a couple of the meal options, the food was beautiful, though there was too much for us. The staff at the ryokan were so lovely- friendly, welcoming & happy to take us to the various places we wanted to see.

United StatesThe remote location may make it difficult for some travelers from overseas. We didn't know you need to be bused to the lodge, maybe I missed it. The tatami futon was very firm, I wonder if you could get extra bedding if you requested it, we didn't ask.
The staff were very friendly, trying to over come the language barrier. The location was remote, not possible to drive there directly, must be bused to the lodge from the parking lot. The staff waited for us even thou we were 1 hour late. The remote location is something we liked, it's right next to a historical temple. It was great that we could enjoy a very private walk in the temple before people start showing up in the morning. The food was very good, the dinner set was vegetarian, which I'm not, but I still enjoyed very much.

GermanyThis was a once-in-a-Lifetime experience! I could not rate them any higher if I tried. The host picked me up from the small railway station. At no charge. He helped me carry my heavy suitcase. Don’t bring one there if you can help it. He took me to this most beautiful location right next to a Buddhist-monastery. In the middle of the woods, going through small, adventurous roads. I was greeted with a matcha 🍵 and a sweet. A can of tea was given to me. My room had a big window to the woods. I went to view the surroundings and I was honestly stunned. His wife asked me if I wanted a bath and at what time I wished to eat. The food served in a separate private room by the family ( grandma and wife) was out of this world. So much love put into that. So much effort. And it never ended, the arrival of even more little pots and pans. I then slept in the perfectly clean little bed on the floor. Rainy night, so cozy. Breakfast was served and just as perfect as the evening before. The host took me back to the train. I left my bag at the station to see the Adachi- museum of art. All in all, if you are after the real Japanese experience- go here! I took the train here for 6 hours, and I would always do this again. I just wish they put their prices up. They are so much worth this- and more.

Netherlands-
The owners go above and beyond to make your stay the most comfortable. Would travel here for the food alone, what a feast! (tip: do a very light lunch prior). These hard working people and their outstanding building and surroundings really need more international visits. So, if you’re in the market for a Adachi museum visit. Please consider this ryokan as your stay. I would recommend a 2 night stay as you can explore the temple grounds and unwind. In other words; It’s been absolutely perfect. どうもありがとう。

United KingdomNothing. But more details available in English would have been useful - I am sure this gem will not stay off the radar for non-Japanese visitors for long.
It felt privileged to stay at this temple lodging. Being located amidst the the temple buildings it was very atmospheric and serene. The staff were super friendly (even with limited English we still communicated well). They helped me make a last minute zen meditation session booking for which I was very grateful. Food was delicious. Shuttle service from the train station was necessary without own transport. They also offered a shuttle to a local famous art museum and garden.

JapanThere's nothing that wasn't good
You can eat the most delicious food in the world. Dinner is shojin ryori (Buddhist cuisine). The innkeeper, a woman innkeeper and the senior woman innkeeper are all very kind. The building and furniture are also very rustic and beautiful, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of a Japanese building from the good old days.

FranceReally nothing!
Very very nice typical Japanese ryokan remotely located next to a temple : amazing setting! The dinners and breakfasts were outstanding. The first dinner was fully veggie (pilgrim requirement perhaps) and delicious, then they asked us if we eat fish and meat, then had also fish and meat dishes. The ryokan-keepers were so kind and helpful to help us locate the place. Because, it is very remote and GPS coordinates not that accurate.

This is a traditional ryokan which has great food and really lovely staff. We were so well taken care of. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and varied on each of the 3 days that we stayed. Our room was spacious and had a delightful sitting area. The location within the temple grounds was beautiful. We were picked up and dropped back at Yasugi train station, as well as the Adachi museum. Highly recommended.

ChinaWe are satisfied with everything they served.
Staying with Shokinkan is an unforgettable experience. Before our stay, I contacted the owner about shuttle bus and they replied promptly. To our surprise, the owner gave us a ride from Adachi museum to the accommodation. Talking of the location, Shokinkan is inside temple complex. You need to go through the pavement of the temple to reach there. Regarding room, it is spacious and the scenery from the window is beyond expression. Green fresh momiji with red azalea. What a combination! We are welcomed with matcha and local sweet upon arrival. Before dinner, taking a shower and immersed in the bath to erase the tiredness from travel. They provide Shojin Cuisine for dinner. No matter the food or the utensils are with high quality and sensibility. The owner’s wife suggested us the local sake, which matched with food perfectly. The portion of dinner is generous. Seasonal vegetables are very tasty. The next morning, before breakfast, we explored Kiyomizu temple during rain. After check out, the owner took us all the way back to Yasugi station.

CanadaThe weather was cool and damp but we warmed up in the lovely hot bath. We would have loved to stay longer!
All of the meals were amazing! This was Shujin Ryori at its finest! We could not have asked for better. The tatami rooms were beautiful with lovely views of the temples and trees. The hotel is set inside the temple complex within a forest of very tall old cedars and bamboo on a mountainside. The air was fresh and clean. It was quiet and peaceful. The staff were very friendly and helpful and offered to drive us to the Adachi Museum of Art. We preferred to relax in the forest with the peace and quiet.
