How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewAmazing accommodation. We had a huge 20 mat room, with AC and fan. The host was wonderful - so helpful and so willing to communicate by means of phone translator. She organised us a taxi to Mt Gassan 8th station. Food was fab. Hope to return to do more of the local pilgrimage routes. Mt Kaguro is on the doorstep.

Verified reviewThis place was a true sanctuary during my two-month journey. I originally planned to stay just a short while, but it felt so peaceful and welcoming that I ended up extending my stay. There was so much to explore in the area. I discovered the three sacred mountains of Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono, part of the Dewa Sanzan, and I wanted to experience them all. The traditional accommodation was simple, beautiful, and full of charm .Bus stop and great food spot just across the street. I truly didn’t want to leave. What made it even more special were the two amazing women who run the place with such kindness and care. I felt at home from the moment I arrived. I will never forget my time here.

Paid an extra heating charge even though I didn't even use heating, but it was only £2 and the lady was so nice I was sad not to give more

Verified reviewThis is the place if you want to have an authentic experience in Japan, it's literally one step from Mount Haguro. The woman who runs the place is lovely and her cooking is great. Worth getting the food.
The time of breakfast was a bit early, also you couldn't shower after 8pm, which I assume it was because she needed to put the heater on or something like that.

Verified reviewThe woman hostess was so wonderfully friendly. It's right around the corner literally from the Mt. Haguro hike. The walk to the top of the mountain was magical. The room was traditional, beautiful and large! The shower was great! Would highly recommend!!!!!

Verified reviewThe hostesses are two very friendly, but strict women. The meal was excellent. It is directly next to the start to the Mount Haguro Climb.
I loved my stay! But I feel this might not be for everyone. There are communal showers and lavatories, the showers can't be used in the morning. The rooms are not lockable. There are rules and clear timings. If you are a respectful guest and can live with the above, it is a very nice experience.

Verified reviewThe English say: It was exactly what it says on the tin. For us it was 10/10 - we expected a relaxed stay close to the world famous cedar tree walk with a „very Japanese“ experience - minimalistic room but with great space - a super friendly, warm welcome. That night we also had some other guests from Japan and around the works engaging in meaningful conversations, enjoying the - vegetarian - food (which we appreciated as we did for breakfast). Despite it was a hot and humid August day the AC worked fine in the room … The whole package plus the very warm hospitality, the next door Soba restaurant, the relaxed town atmosphere and those great hosts made this place special in our hearts. Arigato and thank you - our memories are lasting probably for a very long time. Keep the place exactly as it is and we can highly recommend it to everyone looking for an authentic experience from check in to check out

Verified reviewTo stay in a traditional setting really made our visit to Dewa Sanzan area special. The dinner options where all the food is locally sourced and prepared- incredible experience.
There was nothing I can say that I didn’t like. I liked it all.

Verified reviewThe whole atmosphere was beyond tranquility. The old house, bringing every association with "Japanese living" to live, the relaxibg sounds of a river and crickets, making the night perfect for just slowly drifting to sleep, and the avsolutely lovely personal, helping and preparing everything with wholehearted frindliness.

Verified reviewClose to the entrance to Mt. Haguro and the bus stop.
I stayed only for one night instead of two because I felt so uncomfortable. They don't use covers for the duvet and pillow. Throughout my stay, there was a piece of paper in front of my room stating my name, sex and number of people (one person), which makes obvious that a female solo traveller is staying in that room. There was no possibility to lock the door from inside and you have to take off your slippers in front of the room, meaning that one can easily see if I am in the room or not. I think that's a security issue. Unfriendly staff.

Verified reviewIt was like sleeping in a temple. Old fashioned Japanese style room, ample and clean. I think you can choose to dine there as well.
I didn’t find the staff to be particularly warm (granted, as a young-ish solo female traveller I have experienced this often during this trip), and the facilities are really simple. The room didn’t have access to a window (the one served a corridor shared with other rooms). English was a challenge.
